Surprisingly awesome

  • 5 of 5

I was in Oahu for a month for work and brought my wife and 4 yr old boy and 2 yr old daughter. Wanted a place that at the very least had a 2 bedroom setup in kailua within my budget of $160 per night.

Tradewind Bungalow fit that criteria...

Given the price, my expectations were not very high. But once we got there and had our stay and also stayed in another VRBO location after Tradewind Bungalows that was more expensive, TB was absolutely amazing. Everything from the interior design to the layout blew my expectations out of the water. So impressed and so was my wife.

And Leonard was an awesome host. We hit him up several times for minor stuff like extra beach towels, toilet paper and he was fast to respond and provide.

I read other reviews of TB and they were somewhat accurate like the shower is super sensitive and gets scolding hot. Walk to the beach was a bit long but in reality pretty minor given the price... we borrowed a wagon from a friend and packed the kids in that to make that not as big of a problem.

Leonard said the biggest complaints he’s received was ants and cockaroaches. Yes we had them too but that’s Hawaii!!!! They not gonna kill you... Don’t leave food out to minimize ant problem and i don’t think you can get around the cockroach problem on the east side of Oahu. Go get yourself a hotel in Waikiki if you’re that freaked out about insects and creatures which you’ll probably still get cockroaches bc it’s Hawaii, they’re everywhere...

You will see lots of geckos/lizards and they were great entertainment for my kids. Lonard has some big beautiful Rottweilers that come off aggressive with a loud bark as they’re posted up on the 2nd story as you walk into your pad but they’re really great dogs. Super gentle with my kids when leonard would take them on walks.

Leonard had beach chairs, boogie boards that we used daily. Full Propane grill in the back was great. Fridge is a mini fridge so don’t expect to put a 24 pack of beers and have room for much else. Having a washer and dryer was huge with being there for a month.

I go to Oahu a lot and if I bring my family again, I’m for sure going to see if Tradewind Bungalows is available.

Mahalo Leonard!

Owner's Response: Thank you, Dylan, I am glad that you and your family enjoyed your 21 days stay with us. I know that many travelers are on a budget and I do my best to not raise my prices. I also wanted to clarify the current situation with my Rottweilers. Yes, I used to have 7 of them. Unfortunately I had to put my main alpha male, Woolly Bully, down this past January 2018 due to bone cancer, my second alpha male, Apoll, was put down in April 2018 due to pancreatic failure. My third male, Blitzkrieg, miraculously survived very critical surgery in May and is now kept as an indoor dog. The removal of the three males from the mix has reduced the daily dynamics of the canine corp to a whimper. I now have guests ask me. We have read about your dogs, we do not see any dogs, we do not hear any dogs. Do you still have them? My answer is Yes, I still have 5 of them. Two are permanently indoor dogs and the other three enjoy the large kennels in the back and the run of the very well secured backyard with three walls, fences and gates on both sides of their play area. The only time guests are likely to see any of them is when I take them on their daily late afternoon walks. Thank you, again Dylan.

Great place to be

  • 5 of 5

We had a very pleasant stay at the charming rental that is properly described in the site, on top of having a lot of storage possibilities. The apartment is very clean and well equiped with all you need for a short stay. The high quality washer dryer access is a plus. The place is not in the heart of Kailua but at close distance with a car or walking distance still. If you are looking for a quiet place, it is the perfect spot, on top of being close to beach access. The owner is respectful of your privacy but still responding very quickly to any concerns you may have. You really need to meet the dogs to realize they are so many and living on the same premise. They are quiet and well trained. We will definitely be back if we have a chance. Thank you Leonard for sharing your family house. Much sincerely.

awesome!

  • 5 of 5

this place was in great location, convenient to the town of Kailua and also Kailua Beach with a variety of shops and resteraunts. The rooms were spacious and clean when we arrived. We met Leonard and 2 of his dogs on their afternoon walk and we were impressed with the friendliness of them and really enjoyed petting them. Leonard did mention that he had 2 of his male dogs to pass away earlier in the year. We couldnt have picked a better place to stay

Great place close to the beach!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this unit for 5 nights. It is exactly as described.

We arrived late at night but Leonard had provided us with specific directions and instructions for the unit so we walked right in. The 2 beds are nice and comfortable. There are lots of windows to open to get a cross breeze through the unit so there was no need for the AC unit at all.

Plenty of beach accessories were available for our use. It would be nice if the beach towels were in the unit. We had to ask for them.

Washer and dryer were a greatly appreciated and nice machines. Detergent was even provided.

We only heard the dogs bark a few times in the morning but it was never an issue. The yard is beautifully manicured with lots of trees and plants.

Easy access to Kailua beach for your morning walk in the sand or your day at the beach. A vehicle is recommended as it is a few blocks to the stores and shops. It is very quiet and peaceful in Kailua. Away from the busy streets of Waikiki! Easy to get around in and lots to see and do within a short drive.

We had to make some changes to our dates and Leonard was more than helpful and happy to do it.

We would definitely stay at Leonard's place again!

Owner's Response: Aloha Julie, I am glad that you and your family enjoyed your stay with us and also enjoyed Kailua. Three of my dogs have passed away from cancer this year and will not be replaced. Just too hard saying good bye. Hope you can return in the future. Thank you again.
