Exeptionally nice retreat close to the beach

  • 5 of 5

I am writing this review on our last evening in Oahu, sitting on the Lanai of Leonard's property.

We arrived late which was not a problem at all. The amenities of the appartment were just as discribed, we didn't miss anything and everything was working properly.

Leonard welcomed us the other morning and encouraged us to approach him whenever we would encounter any trouble, which we did not have. The property is conveniently located in a quiet and safe residential area, you could easily walk to the very nice nearby beach. To get food or for the nearest restaurants (there are plenty and good ones), a car is advisable, parking is on the street, but there is plenty of room, so not a problem.

Everything you need for an entire beach day (including a large cooler) is provided.

Ever since we don't really have any points of criticism, we'd like to address several things that had been brought up in previous reviews:

Yes, Leonard does have dogs (seven Rottweilers), however, you wouldn't be able to tell unless you knew. They do bark occasionally, but surprisingly little for such large dogs. They are kept separately from the unit, and I've never actually seen them without Leonard on their side. And it is definetly NOT true, that you'd risk stepping into what they leave behind... in fact, the property is very clean and well-kept.

The washer/dryer are easily accessable and they are quite new models and well-kept and very clean. Leonard even provides the detergent... what more could you ask for??

The fact, that only the bedroom is equipped with an A/C is not really an issue, the place feels very airy and we didn't turn on the A/C much at all.

Owner's Response: Thank you Marcus for your complimentary review. I am glad that our rooms were to your satisfaction. For visitors that have never been to Kailua, it is one of the nicest neighborhoods in Hawaii especially when you consider Kailua Beach. Not only is it one of the nicest beaches in Hawaii, but also one of the safest. There are no large waves or rip tide currents ever affecting any part of Kailua Bay or Beach. Kailua Town also has a wide variety of stores and restaurants. I wold also like to thank you regarding your review of my dogs. The only time, my guests are likely to see any of my Rottweilers is when I take each of them, one at a time, for their late afternoon walk. I strongly feel that walking any dog is part of being a responsible dog owner. When they are not being walked, they are kept in large 10 feet by 10 feet kennels in the backyard. I have three fences or walls keeping them from the right side of the home and three fences on the left side of the home as well. These multiple gates and fences are designed not so much to keep my dogs away from people but to keep people away from my dogs. I obviously do not want any of my pets to become lost or stolen as they are quite valuable. If my dogs do have a fault, it is that they are too friendly and trusting. As I have mentioned before, all seven of my Rottweilers are top AKC Show Dogs who have won numerous show ribbons and titles. I do have quite a few guests that ask specifically to see them to take pictures. Again, Marcus, Thank you for staying with us. Aloha from Kailua, Hawaii PS: For you dog lovers out there, my pets are not kept in kennels around the clock. They spend the day enjoying the freedom of a large very secured yard and are kenneled only at night. Thank you again.

1 mile from Kailua Beach and 1 mile from Downtown Kailua uber from the airport and you don't need a car - I rented a bicycle. This perfect little get away was wonderful. The use of laundry facilities was a huge plus. The owner has dogs but I didn't even know they were there until I asked - they were extremely friendly

Love the Hawaii life

  • 4 of 5

This unit is just like what you see in the pictures. Leonard was easy to work with and willing to help in any way. There are many beach items, including fins, boogieboards, chairs, cooler, float tube etc. Not sure about an umbrella. The kitchen was great to have and we made breakfast and lunch everyday. Freezer works well for ice. Plenty of room in the fridge and nice cookware, silverware and utensils compared to some places.$50 on supplies at Walmart and you can eat for the week. We also used the BBQ one night for dinner. Target is close if you decide to do that - or forget anything else at home. Leonard's dogs are well trained and you will hardly see them. We ran into him walking one when we arrived and it was well behaved.

Things to know before you go:

1 The AC only cools the back bedroom. Understandably, Leonard doesn't want it running while you are out which means the front sitting room is never really cool. here are fans which help. Luckily it was only in the low 80's during our stay and we managed. If you are used to a hotel where you crank the air all day and come back to a cold room, this is not the one for you.

2 There are ants and other bugs. We had ants in the front bedroom 3 times. Leonard came and sprayed two days in a row and they finally gave up. Luckily only a few in the kitchen, but I was neurotic about wiping every crumb to keep them away. This would be harder with small children.

3 If you stay more than 3 days, bring a bar of soap. Bring your own shampoo too.

4 The dogs bark. While they do not bark for any prolonged periods, they do bark. They are loud barkers. We woke up to it every morning. Sometimes as early as 5:15am. They seem to bark periodically, like every 20-30 minutes for 5 to 20 barks. I guess this is related to the walk schedule as Leonard walks them one at a time and they greet the one returning. Our first night they barked on and off from about 9 - midnight. A few times the dogs got into scuffles too. It seems they spend time on the balcony, which sounds like it's right over your head, though it isn't. From here the dogs bark at passerby as well.

5 Your front door faces the door of the main house, only 10-15 feet away. There is one walkway to both, so the owners and their visitors walk right by. We were able to hear many goings on in the main house, TV, conversation, phone calls, dishes etc.

6 You arent going to walk to the beach

In all, nice place with more space and amenities than a hotel for a good price.

Owner's Response: Thank you Heather, I do supply lots of beach equipment but not an umbrella as the winds at Kailua Beach are usually to strong and gusty for that. Thank you for the comment about some noise coming from the main house. I occasionally have family and friends over and they do watch TV and sometimes talk too loudly. I will make sure that this is kept to a minimum. Most of the time, the rest of the home is not occupied. I always ask all guests for feedback on the dogs as I can easily keep them all in the back yard kennel area. Many of my guests specifically ask if they can meet my show dogs. The majority of my guests are fine with the dogs, however I fully understand that every guest is different and I can and will ensure that their requests are respected.

Great place to stay away from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu.

Nice place to stay in Kailua if you have or rent a car. Mr. Couzjin is a good host who can be of great assistance, or simply leave you to your privacy, as you desire. The Tradewind Bungalow is a very good bargain for the budget conscious.

Owner's Response: Thank you Bill, Happy that you enjoyed yourself. I know that many visitors who look to stay at my vacation rentals are budget conscious and do not want to stay at the hotels where you are charged for everything including parking. I offer two separate bedrooms, each with a queen size bed and a large front room. I believe that my rental rates compares very favorable with many of my Kailua based competition.

The description of the property needs editing

  • 4 of 5

Future guests should know that if the owner is present (he was not in residence most of the time of our stay} they might hear dog barking from the seven Rottweiler dogs the owner keeps on the property, I must add that the owner makes every attempt to stop the barking once it is heard.. I would further add that the owner makes every effort to respond to guests" needs. When we arrived there was a couple house-sitting in his residence and they responded immediately, when the shower door did not open/close properly, by making it operable..

Owner's Response: Thank you Anthony. the only reason that I had a house sitter during your stay was that I was attending a family reunion in Holland, which is where I am from. I had a trusted friend watch the home and take care of the rental while I was away. I travel off island once every 3-4 years. The rest of the time, I am here at the home. After your stay the shower door with the faulty hinge was replaced with a brand new door. My policy is to replace anything that is not working correctly instead of just repairing it.
