Winner of the 2016 Utah Heritage Award for outstanding historic preservation, Browning House is a classic Arts and Crafts-period mansion restored to its 1911 elegance, located within the Eccles National Historic District. With rich hardwoods, stained glass and painted murals, this glorious house was originally built by the family of famed firearms inventor John Browning. Superb craftsmanship inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement is brimming throughout. Browning House features almost 6,000 square feet of indoor space and another 2,500 square feet of outdoor patios and decks, complete with a lush waterfall and fish pond. The house features six spacious bedrooms and 3.5 baths, a chef’s kitchen with all modern appliances, formal dining, and a separate breakfast nook. For ultimate relaxation, enjoy our steam room and private hot-tub, or relax on our covered outdoor smoking deck. Or maybe you just want to enjoy the game on the 64-inch flat screen. Browning Mansion is ideal for ski vacations, Weddings, family reunions or any special occasions.

About Gary Simon

Gary was born and raised in San Diego, CA until fourth grade when he moved 100 miles north with his family to Hacienda Heights, CA where he completed his prep schooling. He attended San Diego State University 1972-1978 and graduated with a (lot of) B.S. in Business, Finance, Real estate and Masters in adult education (almost, thesis pending, don’t hold your breath).

He worked as an independent Realtor and community college instructor in San Diego 1978-82 and had all the real estate he could eat before hiring on at Edwards AFB as the base Real Estate and Cultural Resource Manager. In 1986 he moved with wife and two sons to Osan Air Base, South Korea to become the Seventh Air Force Logistics Plans Officer where Lt. Gen Rogers rewarded him with an orientation flight on the F-16D fighting falcon, best adventure ride you’ll ever get! During his time at Osan Gary became a founding member of the South Korean ski Patrol and the founder and Grand Master of the Osan Bulgogi Hash House Harriers and Harriettes (H4), a 7th Generation kennel from Mother Hash (a drinking club with a running problem). During the 90’s also founded the ecstasy H4 which he led to run biennially at 5 consecutive interhashes in the Philipines, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Greece, Island of Rhodes, Indonesia, Tasmania .

In 1990 Gary returned to San Diego to work for NAVFAC Southwest as a civilian SeaBee working alternatively in Real Estate, Community planning, environmental restoration and planning, construction and renewable energy. At this same time he was a member of the Bear Mt ski Patrol and the Association of Professional Patrollers.

Gary retired from DoD civil service in 2012 and began splitting his time between Sailing, boating, surfing in San Diego and ski patrolling at Powder Mt in Utah’s Wasatch Mountains to enjoy “the greatest snow on earth.” He bought the Browning Mansion in May 2017 and looks forward to sharing his experience there with his guests.

What makes this house unique

Space, privacy, and charm. The mansion was obviously built to the highest standards of the time during the Uber rich robber barons era. It's incredible beauty begins with it's setting in a neighborhood among dozens of other historic Mansions. the From the curb the mansion is a fine example of the Frank Lloyd Wright era of Prairie and craftsman style architecture. From the front porch there are incredible views of the nearby majestic Wasatch mountains. The grand entry gallery showcases the wooden staircase, grand salon and elegant dining room. Swing through the bulter's dining room door to find the large gourmet kitchen which was re-built during the ownership of one of Ogdens most prominent mid-century Restaurateurs, Milton Berlin. Stroll through the kitchen and pass through the breakfast nook over looking the bsckyard and into the large billard/game room also added by Berlin. Open the french doors enter the covered back porch overlooking the large but secluded backyard enclosed all around by a 8' metal wall containing a waterfall fountain cascading into the coy pond, hot tub, propane fire pit and Barbecue 2500 SF of concrete patio with seating for 30 at 4 umbrella table for outdoor entertaining. back in the grand entry gallery, float up the elegant staircase to discover yet another large gallery providing access to 4 large bedrooms sharing 2 full baths on the second floor. Complete your tour by finding the hidden basement stairway off of the butlers pantry/laundry porch to access the the 3 sleeping rooms and huge bathroom with steam shower. Fabulous for the Bridal Party

We had a wonderful time. The space was great for our family.

Our family really enjoyed staying at the Browning Mansion for our reunion! There was plenty of room for everyone and the beds were so comfortable! The back patio space was a great area for our grandchildren to play and for all of us to do outdoor family activites. Our married children loved the hot tub, as well. The main level living space provided plenty of areas to play, relax, eat, etc.

There were a few minor irritations like the doors being difficult to open and shut because of swelling and age. The swamp cooler was not as comfortable as central air would have been, so the bedrooms were warm at night. And the upstairs shower and bathtub were a bit funky.

Regardless, of the age related inconveniences, we loved our stay and would go again!

Great place for a large family event

We enjoyed the variety of large rooms for family to gather and interact. The fish pond, hot tub, large patio and enclosed yard is terrific.

The only downside is the location. Be aware this is a very old building that has been remodeled many times.

We are located in a National Register historic residential district/neighborhood one mile from the revitalized downtown historic district, not a lot we can do about changing location but we will attempt to communicate this to future guests so they may develop a more accurate expectation. Regarding the remodeling I'm guessing we are all gonna need a little work after one hundred years! Glad you enjoyed your stay and thanks for the feedback, we can't get better without it. Clean, well stocked, comfortable

We found The Browning Mansion perfect for our family get-together. We had a large group and everyone fit in the house perfectly. The kitchen was large, clean, and well stocked with dishes, spices, etc.

Spacious and comfortable.

If you enjoy a bit of history, a space for socializing, but a space that lets you get off by yourself, all at the same time, this place if for you. You'll read other reviews highlighting bathrooms and internet.

We did not try internet upstairs or downstairs, sticking to the main floor. It worked flawlessly.

Bathrooms may be a bit of a challenge, but my wife confirmed the upstairs shower in the master is suitable and that the downstairs shower is, indeed, the best in the home.

The property owner communicated quickly and clearly, and was on site as we arrived to help us get settled in.

We're going to try other VRBOs in the area, but will likely come back to the Browning House at some point in the future.

Owner's Response: Thanks Stephen, No surprise that we agree! In June 2017 we upgraded to an ORBI wi-fi system and now have excellent results everywhere in the house and on the grounds. We are pleased that you had ample room for group gatherings and private moments, at the same time. With Beds, futons and pull out sofas for 24 (friendly) guests one can still slip away from the hub-bub in the library/conservatory, game rooms, sunset deck, front porch, formal dining room, breakfast room or rear yard and patio to find a quiet moment to soak up the history. We encourage you to try the other establishments in the area and hope you will find us the "pick of the Litter" and will return frequently to the Browning Mansion. We are planning upgrades to the upstairs baths in 2018, sincerely Gary S..

Great Home

We stayed at the Historic Browning Mansion while skiing at Snow Basin and Powder Mountain. The house is in a perfect location as it only took us 1/2 hour to get to the mountains.

Thinking the showers were going to be a problem based on the other reviews, we found them more of a minor issue, all were comfortable functioning during our stay.

The house was very comfortable, with great bedrooms. It was also perfect for our après ski enjoying large kitchen, rec room and hot tub.

I strongly recommend the house!
