About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Den, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 9)

A marvelous mountain lodge completed in 2002 and set on top of a ridge in the middle of 175 acres with long vistas in all directions. This mountain getaway is located just four miles from the village of Hot Springs and the Homestead Resort. Much of the adjoining land and view-shed of Winding Ridge is part of the George Washington National Forest. Because of this there is not another house in sight, and hardly a light visible at night!

The lodge offers a great room with stone fireplace, study with sofa bed and adjoining full bath, master bedroom with a queen sized bed and en suite bath. Second bedroom has a antique double bed and shares a bath with the third bedroom which has three single beds. Access the crow's nest from the spiral staircase - the perfect place to enjoy 360 degree mountain views and the stars at night. The screened porch and beautiful stone terrace provide outdoor living and dining space as well. For enjoyment inside, there is a collection of board games, a large selection of classic and children's videos, and an eclectic library.

Take to the woods and enjoy miles of trails, or just take a casual walk down to a mountain stream. Catch a glimpse of wildlife such as whitetail deer and wild turkeys, or if you are lucky a black bear. A search for native flowering plants on the property can come up with flame azaleas, mountain laurel or rhododendron. One of the Homestead bridle trails, Winding Trail, crosses through the property.

If you need a break from nature we have satelite, 50' smart TV, netflix, wireless internet, and a stereo with a cord to connect your phone or Ipod. There are speakers on the porch as well as inside. There are no neighbors within miles, so crank it up if you like!

About Kevin and Sue Eley

My grandfather searched Bath and Highland for more than a decade before finding a nearby property in Dunn's Gap in 1965. The time I spent there as a youth, roaming the woods and streams ingrained a love of the area.

Why Kevin and Sue Eley chose Shenandoah Valley

My family bought the property now known as Winding Ridge in the 1980's. After much hiking of the area in all seasons, calculation of the sun angles at solstice and equinox, we selected the site. Using Staunton architect John Moore and local builder Lee Fry we broke ground in 2001 and completed construction in 2002. The stone for the fireplace and chimney is local Bath County sandstone, layed up by the skilled father/son mason team of Curtis and Jeff Lowry. The road and the dry stone retaining walls were built by another father son team of Burton and Mike Trimble. We endeavored to use as much local material as possible.

What makes this house unique

We have enjoyed having our three sons, now teenagers, grow up free to explore and discover the wonders of nature that are right outside the door of Winding Ridge.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I stood watching the sun rise over the mountain this morning. With coffee cup in hand, before the three bay window, it began as a faint blue. As light increased, a silvery frost highlighted the landscape before me. Forcing myself to stay put, stubborn brown leaves now appeared guilded, bare branches glistened, and pine needles tipped. Pulling over a stool I sat and sipped, the place where the sun would rise was now a glow! - and soon the intensity of the flow caused me to look away. It is now time to pack and go - this is after all my last day. Parting such sweet sorrow.......

We had an AMAZING time at beautiful Winding Ridge! The house was terrific - plenty of space for everyone and the views were breathtaking. I know there is lots to do in the area, but the house, big fireplace and views were so spectacular that we spent most of our time visiting, reading in front of the fireplace, cooking in the wonderful kitchen and just hanging out. My husband and I are good cooks and the kitchen was great - it had everything we needed. Oh, and did we mention that the house was immaculate? It was incredibly clean and orderly! We also loved having the large screen TV in a family room - we enjoyed watching one of the Cub playoff games in great comfort. We just have two suggestions: 1. We would willingly pay more money to have a new King bed in the master bedroom (instead of the queen - which was a bit lumpy). 2. We've noticed that many VRBO owners are now requiring tenants to completely clean out the refrigerator when they leave. We LOVE this idea. Maybe it was because we stayed in October, at the end of the season, but there was quite an assortment of half eaten jars of stuff taking up space in the refrigerator and some of it looked pretty old and used up. Having seen our grandchildren go after jams and peanut butter in jars, we tend to imagine the worst in terms of refrigerator hygiene and so never use anything in these jars anyway. Just a thought! But please don't let these two comments take away from the beauty and comfort of Winding Ridge - we hope to come back again next year as this is one of the nicest places we have stayed.

Exactly what we needed!

  • 5 of 5

My sisters and I enjoyed a week at Winding Ridge recently, and it was amazing. I haven't been this relaxed for a long time, and we hated to leave on check out day. The setting is one-of-a-kind. Truly on top of a ridge with not another house in sight. There is plenty of room to spread out for privacy. We loved how the bedrooms are in a separate wing. The kitchen has everything you need to cook almost anything. Our favorite room was the den for hanging out. Outside, the beautiful patio and deck are perfect for both morning coffee and cocktails in the evening. We ate all our meals on the large screen porch. You must go up into the crow's nest for night star gazing (It's been a long time since I saw the Milky Way) or for a thunderstorm.

Also, the house has excellent internet and satellite TV service. There is a VHS/DVD player, a stereo, and games. We used the binoculars to enjoy a woodpecker and the deer, including a little fawn. One of our favorite things in the house were all the books. There is something for everyone. I loved the books of maps, antiques and history. My sisters enjoyed the books on plants, pottery and antique furniture. There are also many novels.

If you can bring yourself to leave the house, go on adventures. There are so many parks nearby for hiking, swimming and fishing. We went to Hidden Valley and saw the house where Sommersby was filmed. We spent time in the creeks and rivers observing crayfish and other critters. If you like collecting, we found some fossils in the shale deposits.

I highly recommend this property. I am ready to return.

We had a wonderful time at Winding Ridge. The property was clean and well maintained. The house is very well equipped with plenty of space and great views from the deck, crows nest, and master bedroom. We will definitely stay here again.
