'Winding Ridge' a Mountaintop Home with Incredible Views!

Bedrooms 3
Space 2,700 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Den, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 9)

A marvelous mountain lodge completed in 2002 and set on top of a ridge in the middle of 175 acres with long vistas in all directions. This mountain getaway is located just four miles from the village of Hot Springs and the Homestead Resort. Much of the adjoining land and view-shed of Winding Ridge is part of the George Washington National Forest. Because of this there is not another house in sight, and hardly a light visible at night!

The lodge offers a great room with stone fireplace, study with sofa bed and adjoining full bath, master bedroom with a queen sized bed and en suite bath. Second bedroom has a antique double bed and shares a bath with the third bedroom which has three single beds. Access the crow's nest from the spiral staircase - the perfect place to enjoy 360 degree mountain views and the stars at night. The screened porch and beautiful stone terrace provide outdoor living and dining space as well. For enjoyment inside, there is a collection of board games, a large selection of classic and children's videos, and an eclectic library.

Take to the woods and enjoy miles of trails, or just take a casual walk down to a mountain stream. Catch a glimpse of wildlife such as whitetail deer and wild turkeys, or if you are lucky a black bear. A search for native flowering plants on the property can come up with flame azaleas, mountain laurel or rhododendron. One of the Homestead bridle trails, Winding Trail, crosses through the property.

If you need a break from nature we have satellite, 50' smart TV, netflix, wireless internet, and a stereo with a cord to connect your phone or Ipod. There are speakers on the porch as well as inside. There are no neighbors within miles, so crank it up if you like!

About Kevin and Sue Eley

My grandfather searched Bath and Highland for more than a decade before finding a nearby property in Dunn's Gap in 1965. The time I spent there as a youth, roaming the woods and streams ingrained a love of the area.

Why Kevin and Sue Eley chose Shenandoah Valley

My family bought the property now known as Winding Ridge in the 1980's. After much hiking of the area in all seasons, calculation of the sun angles at solstice and equinox, we selected the site. Using Staunton architect John Moore and local builder Lee Fry we broke ground in 2001 and completed construction in 2002. The stone for the fireplace and chimney is local Bath County sandstone, layed up by the skilled father/son mason team of Curtis and Jeff Lowry. The road and the dry stone retaining walls were built by another father son team of Burton and Mike Trimble. We endeavored to use as much local material as possible.

What makes this house unique

We have enjoyed having our three sons, now teenagers, grow up free to explore and discover the wonders of nature that are right outside the door of Winding Ridge.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I stood watching the sun rise over the mountain this morning. With coffee cup in hand, before the three bay window, it began as a faint blue. As light increased, a silvery frost highlighted the landscape before me. Forcing myself to stay put, stubborn brown leaves now appeared guilded, bare branches glistened, and pine needles tipped. Pulling over a stool I sat and sipped, the place where the sun would rise was now a glow! - and soon the intensity of the flow caused me to look away. It is now time to pack and go - this is after all my last day. Parting such sweet sorrow.......

The house is so much more amazing than the photos! Our family had such a great time at this house and on the property. I would recommend it to anyone wanting a getaway. There are so many things we enjoyed: coffee on the porch with birds singing, the calmness of the forest and mountains, all the amenities in the house, the deer, the crow's nest, the games, puzzles, the movies, the classical music, the woodwork, pictures, tapestry, etc...wedefinitely want to come back again.the kids and I did not want to leave!

Ideal getaway for a family/friends retreat!

  • 4 of 5

Lovely home in terms of location, facilities, appearance and beauty! If one is looking for a quiet, mountain retreat, it is hard to imagine anything better...and the maintenance and decor of the home by the Eleys was quite the best we've seen from rentals from websites such as VRBO. Some of the beds could do with more comfortable (and less noisy!) mattresses but otherwise this was a very well maintained and equipped home and Kevin Eley, the owner, was very responsive on emails.

Secluded & Relaxing

  • 4 of 5

My group really enjoyed our stay. Everything from the booking to the checkout was smooth and seamless. The property had the majority of our necessities. The only downside of experienced was the middle bed in the back bedroom was not the most comfortable for sleeping. Other than that, everything was great.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words. While the middle bed worked for kids, we realize it doesn't work for everyone, so it is being replaced this year. We have also have a brand new master bedroom mattress set already in place.

"Wonderful" doesn't cover it!

This is our second time staying at Winding Ridge, and we plan to go back again next year! We have a great time hiking, taking in the stars, enjoying the quiet and the beauty. Everything you can imagine needing is provided for you. So many small details are covered from the logs ready to light in the fireplace, to the glow of the lights as we pull up. It warms my heart. I wish this were my home! Thank you for allowing us to enjoy your little piece of paradise!

A wonderful winter escape

  • 5 of 5

We loved this house and loved the surrounding area. The house is inviting, warm and cozy with several areas for gathering together or alone. We read and did puzzles in the main area near the fireplace, watched movies in the room off the main room, and the kitchen was roomy and well-stocked with cooking gadgets and cookware. It was a little cold to use the porch or decks but the views from each, and from inside the house, were stunning. Having never visited Bath County, VA before we were impressed by the beauty of the area and enjoyed beautiful views of Moomaw Lake from a trail about 20 mins from the house. The owner is very responsive and helpful. We've rented very lovely houses in places like Sodona and Paris, but Winding Ridge is definitely one of our favorites. We hope to return.

We had an AMAZING time at beautiful Winding Ridge! The house was terrific - plenty of space for everyone and the views were breathtaking. I know there is lots to do in the area, but the house, big fireplace and views were so spectacular that we spent most of our time visiting, reading in front of the fireplace, cooking in the wonderful kitchen and just hanging out. My husband and I are good cooks and the kitchen was great - it had everything we needed. Oh, and did we mention that the house was immaculate? It was incredibly clean and orderly! We also loved having the large screen TV in a family room - we enjoyed watching one of the Cub playoff games in great comfort. We just have two suggestions: 1. We would willingly pay more money to have a new King bed in the master bedroom (instead of the queen - which was a bit lumpy). 2. We've noticed that many VRBO owners are now requiring tenants to completely clean out the refrigerator when they leave. We LOVE this idea. Maybe it was because we stayed in October, at the end of the season, but there was quite an assortment of half eaten jars of stuff taking up space in the refrigerator and some of it looked pretty old and used up. Having seen our grandchildren go after jams and peanut butter in jars, we tend to imagine the worst in terms of refrigerator hygiene and so never use anything in these jars anyway. Just a thought! But please don't let these two comments take away from the beauty and comfort of Winding Ridge - we hope to come back again next year as this is one of the nicest places we have stayed.
