About Mimi Haberfeld

I am from Berkeley, CA.,but fell in love with Oaxaca after just one short visit.

I was a small hotel owner in Guatemala before retiring here. After

building this 2 unit house-renting just seemed the perfect way to share

my love of Oaxaca! I want to offer you my beautiful, comfortable, art filled HOME !! You will get to know Veronica & Judith our wonderful caretakers!

Mimi Haberfeld purchased this apartment in 2004

Why Mimi Haberfeld chose De Xochimilco

Oaxaca, Mexico offers such a wonderful array of things to explore. As a ceramic artist, I love to visit the local potters, weaving villages & the fabulous prehispanic ruins.Art abounds here & some evenings as many as 3 art openings, make fun social outings. Restaurants here offer delicious, Oaxacan fare, & there are a number of great cooking schools. I feel like Oaxaca chose ME!!!

What makes this apartment unique

Our home, is located a short 15 min. walk to the historic center,' the Zocolo ', close to Spanish

schools, churches, & museums. I designed

the house for entertaining, with its open floor plan & well appointed kitchen. The fabulous view from the huge roof garden entices us to relax at days end.The local library offers over 30 thousand books, most in English, plus hundreds of DVDs.Gardening in Oaxaca is a terrific hobby as there are so many easy to grow plants. I'm a handwoven textile collector so I enjoy shopping for 'huipils', as well as wearing them. The country's only textile museum is a delight!

A lovely apartment

  • 5 of 5

My friend Sharon and I spent nine days here in October. The apartment - more like a home, has been great for us. Lots of room, well appointed, greater for cooking and in a fairly quiet neighborhood. It's a bit of a walk to downtown, but we figured - more walking, more eating.:). Although we were a bit above the city with a great view of the surrounding mountains, our walk home was only a very gradual uphill walk.

Mimi and the caretakers, Alejandro and Judith were all very helpful during our stay.

There is a small market up the hill about three blocks away where we picked up fresh squeezed orange juice several times.

We would definitely recommend this as a place to stay in Oaxaca.

House Rich with Culture of Mexico and Beyond

  • 4 of 5

We spent a month here, and never tired of the artwork. The spacious kitchen was adequately equipped, and the study filled with art and travel books was a nice retreat. The vast views across the valley to the mountains from the rooftop terrace were beautiful. And we enjoyed the birds - especially the hummingbirds - colibri - flitting about the Flame Tree right off the terrace. Lizards, nesting doves and beetles also thrived in the lush surroundings. The collection of succulents and cacti is vast - often being confused with the playful ceramic cactus scattered throughout the terraces.

Since we spent so much time in Centro, the location of the house was a little far, taking us 20 minutes to drive and find parking.

The caretakers of the house, Judith and Alejandro were waiting to greet us and show us around the property. They came by two or three times a week to check in on us to make sure everything was ok and to clean rhe house and terraces. We were generally able to communicate with our limited Spanish, but it would be challenging for guests that do not have a basic grasp of the language.

We were fortunate to have a car to get around and be the only guests on this three unit enclosed and secure property to be able to park inside the security gate.

All said, it was an enjoyable and memorable stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your wonderful review. The majority of our guests do not bring cars to Oaxaca. Unfortunately traffic congestion is common (especially during the Guelaguetza season) and parking is still difficult to find in spite of an increase in parking lots in recent years. Guests generally find it more convenient and less time consuming to take taxis or collectivos and leave the driving to the locals who know how to avoid the most congested areas. We are so glad that you enjoyed the views and the art collection as well as our collection of flora and fauna! Hope to see you again.

Everything we needed and more!

  • 5 of 5

We just spent a week here and had an absolutely perfect holiday week. The location is great. Especially because some of us were walking to the Instituto Cultural de Oaxaca for classes each morning, which was not far. The walk to el Centro was an easy and enjoyable one. The home is very charming, with everything you could want or need for comfort and enjoyment. Lots of space and decorated with art by the owner as well as many crafts from local artists and craftsmen. The perfect home away from home for us. The caretakers of the property, Alejandro and Judith, are lovely people who were very attentive and helpful. Alejandro took us on an excursion outside the city to Teotitlan where we had a wonderful presentation from one of the rug and textile makers, as well as to a small town where we watched the old method of making Mezcal. It was a great day's outing and he was so accommodating. We'll be returning to stay here again and again.

Thank you all for such wonderful service!

Sensational to our sensibilities.

  • 5 of 5

This property offered everything that we hoped for or wanted in our visit to Oaxaca. The romance of Mexico was readily apparent from the large balcony with mountain views rising over a rolling cityscape; from the tile work throughout but particularly the kitchen and baths; from the profusion of local art decorating the apartment; to the container gardens on every level from street entry to azotea (roof terrace) with its display of potted cacti and more expansive views. My favorite moments happened early in the morning sitting on the balcony, watching the sun rise over the mountains, smelling the new day's sweetness lingering on the air, and listening to the distant rooster rejoicing that it had yet another day saved from the stew pot. But taking the night on the azotea with family and a bottle of mezcal had its own magic.

The house was spotlessly clean at our arrival and the property well maintained. It had everything. My son said, "Is there a coffee grinder?" And there was a coffee grinder. I asked another time, "Is there a citrus juicer?" And there it was. In short the home provided everything we needed for meal preparations, as well as, ample linens throughout. The automatic ice maker in the refrigerator along with filtered water throughout was a real boon in a hot climate. In short the only thing that we found missing was a second week to continue enjoying the place.

Alejandro and Judith maintain the property and provide ancillary services. Alejandro will pick you up at the airport for instance. Their telephone numbers are available at the property and they passed through to see what if anything was needed on a regular basis. They are delightful, but like most Oaxaquenos have a limited amount of English, so basic Spanish or and iPad or smartphone with a translation program is helpful. And not just for the property, but for moving about Oaxaca.

The property is a 20 minute walk to the north end of the Centro Histórico, the plaza at El Templo de Santo Domingo. And requires an addition 5 minutes to walk home as it is uphill. There are taxis available but we seemed to regularly walk.It is a pleasant walk past bars, cafes, and other small businesses. And the location of this house provided a sense of what the real Oaxaca was like. It is situated between the tourist buzz to the south and commercial buzz of modern Mexican society to the north. We could not have been happier.

Perfect apartment for visiting Oaxaca

  • 5 of 5

What a beautifully appointed and decorated apartment, in a perfect location for walking into the heart of Oaxaca. We only regret that we weren't able to spend more time napping in the hammocks or cooking in the gorgeous kitchen, because there was so much to see and do and eat in the heart of the city, just a 15 minute walk away. Thank you so much for providing every comfort we could possibly want, including milk, eggs and tortillas in the refrigerator (perfect for our late night arrival), and the referral to caretakers Alejandro and Judith, who were so helpful with airport transfers and answering any questions we had. We will be back!
