About Mimi Haberfeld

I am from Berkeley, CA.,but fell in love with Oaxaca after just one short visit.

I was a small hotel owner in Guatemala before retiring here. After

building this 2 unit house-renting just seemed the perfect way to share

my love of Oaxaca! I want to offer you my beautiful, comfortable, art filled HOME !! You will get to know Veronica & Judith our wonderful caretakers!

Mimi Haberfeld purchased this apartment in 2004

Why Mimi Haberfeld chose De Xochimilco

Oaxaca, Mexico offers such a wonderful array of things to explore. As a ceramic artist, I love to visit the local potters, weaving villages & the fabulous prehispanic ruins.Art abounds here & some evenings as many as 3 art openings, make fun social outings. Restaurants here offer delicious, Oaxacan fare, & there are a number of great cooking schools. I feel like Oaxaca chose ME!!!

What makes this apartment unique

Our home, is located a short 15 min. walk to the historic center,' the Zocolo ', close to Spanish

schools, churches, & museums. I designed

the house for entertaining, with its open floor plan & well appointed kitchen. The fabulous view from the huge roof garden entices us to relax at days end.The local library offers over 30 thousand books, most in English, plus hundreds of DVDs.Gardening in Oaxaca is a terrific hobby as there are so many easy to grow plants. I'm a handwoven textile collector so I enjoy shopping for 'huipils', as well as wearing them. The country's only textile museum is a delight!

We would recommend this to any of our friends as a most enjoyable place to stay. The house mangement by Alejandro and Judi was wonderful! They made our stay so comfortable, and the surrounding patios were immaculate with beautiful plants everywhere.

Comfort and perfect location

  • 5 of 5

A gorgeous place that is the perfect distance from town for people who enjoy walking as we do. The house is perfectly equipped and we didn’t lack anything. We enjoyed the hammock and rooftop views. It was a great refuge to take a siesta when the day’s heat was overwhelming. We would love to return.

Thank you.

Perfect for two couples

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time I have stayed at this property, once two years ago in the larger house below with three friends and this time with my wife and one other couple in this upper level apartment. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay each time. The neighborhood is a fifteen minute walk to the north part of the city center and 20 minutes to the restaurant area( and best wine shop) in the Reforma neighborhood to the east. There is an excellent breakfast and lunch spot 5 minutes away on the same route. Every day we walked to one area or another and then took a taxi back. Any issues that arise can be quickly delt with by phone or e-mail to Mimi, or phone call to the caretakers, Judith and Alejandro( Spanish-speaking only). There are many dogs in the neighborhood, but they are on the rooftops and not in the street. They love to communicate during the night, as do a couple of roosters, so wearing ear plugs at night was very helpful. This goes with the territory and I expect would be true in every neighborhood in the city. We felt safe everywhere we walked in the city, much more than any city in the U.S.

Easy living

  • 5 of 5

This is a well appointed homey, comfortable, upstairs apartment. The entire property is beautifully maintained by a dedicated husband/wife team. The walk to town was not too difficult and the location was quiet and felt very safe. We were 2 couples that thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

A lovely apartment

  • 5 of 5

My friend Sharon and I spent nine days here in October. The apartment - more like a home, has been great for us. Lots of room, well appointed, greater for cooking and in a fairly quiet neighborhood. It's a bit of a walk to downtown, but we figured - more walking, more eating.:). Although we were a bit above the city with a great view of the surrounding mountains, our walk home was only a very gradual uphill walk.

Mimi and the caretakers, Alejandro and Judith were all very helpful during our stay.

There is a small market up the hill about three blocks away where we picked up fresh squeezed orange juice several times.

We would definitely recommend this as a place to stay in Oaxaca.
