About Donna De Grado

Bob and I have enjoyed our vacation home for years. We own and operate a motel and rv park in Challis Id. We have 2 daughters and 2 granddaughters and 1 grandson. Which enjoy the cabin just as much as we do. Bob was born in Chicago Ill. and I was born in GA. But we have made Idaho our home for 37 years. We love the outdoors. Which include fishing, and hiking , riding our atv's and getting to spend time with our grandkids here at the yankee fork resort-cabin

Donna De Grado purchased this cabin in 1999

Why Donna De Grado chose Idaho

We worked for years in Stanley id. Cleaning and restoring log homes. The cabin was just great for us to work out of. As we retired we realize we want others to share the great blessing that the Stanley basin has to offer. The SNRA is just down the road. We love going to all the different lakes in this area. Stanley id is the greatest secret of Idaho. The Cabin is quite and restful yet is close enough to the town that we can still enjoy that .

What makes this cabin unique

We loved this cabin when we first laid eyes on it. It is right in the middle of the trees. We can sit on the front deck and watch the big game on the hillside or we can go to the back deck and watch the eagles soar overhead. Or watch the fox seek up trying to steal that last piece of food. Or sit around the fire at night and eat smores. We just love the quite. But we can still ride our atv's or take the kids fishing.

Great time with brothers and sisters-in-law

  • 5 of 5

This was a great place to have a long weekend with my brothers and sisters-in-law. It was near some interesting side trips, but it was a great place to stay home and relax, too. It was very clean and each room was decorated with a theme. The furnishings were very nice and coordinated with each other rather than cast-offs that didn't fit into their main home. There was a tray with a nice white wine and 4 glasses waiting for us on the kitchen counter when we arrived. All the beds, including the hide-a-beds, were very comfortable. It was hot during the day (we were there the weekend before the 4th of July), but it cooled down nicely at night for sleeping. There was air conditioning in the house that kept it cool inside the house during the day. There was a two-person hammock strung between two trees that doesn't show in this picture that was a nice place to take a nap, read a book or just lay there looking at the scenery. There was an ATV camp going on that was located on the main road to the house. So there was a lot of ATV traffic zipping up and down the road, but I would still give this place 5 stars.

We left our coffee grinder by mistake in the house when we locked up, but the owner was nice enough to package it and mail it to us and take the cost from our cleaning deposit. I felt like it was a good value and affordable when the cost was split between the 3 couples.

Owner's Response: Hello Larry and Family We were so happy you enjoyed our Cabin. Bob and I love the cabin and we hope all our guest do as well. We are glad the A/C worked for you. We added it last year because the weather is getting real warm. The hammock is one of my favorite places to relax. We are glad you enjoyed the wine, nothing better than just relaxing with a glass of wine in the evening. Please come back again. Till we meet again --take care.

Yankee Fork Resort cabin was great for our stay!

  • 4 of 5

This cabin is located in a small community of other cabins in various states of condition. This cabin was one of the better cabins in the neighborhood for sure. The fishing ponds just down the road were freshly stocked with trout averaging 12+ inches and our grandkids were catching them on every cast. We kept 7 trout and threw the rest back. Mosquitos were pesky and hungry so bring your mosquito spray! There is no cell phone service until you get to lower Stanley which we didn't mind because the point was to get off the grid for a few days. If you want to fish and explore the ghost towns and see the gold dredge this cabin is the perfect location!

A Great Retreat and Base Camp

  • 5 of 5

My good friend and I had a guys' retreat at this property and it was wonderful. Everything that was advertised about this place turned out to be exactly what was delivered. We each had a lovely separate bedroom, a fully equipped kitchen, and an efficient wi-fi, phone landline, and satellite TV. The location was great. Each day we got up and out early, hiked and fished in the Sawtooths and the White Clouds, and came home to a hot shower, a home-cooked meal (done by us), and a relaxing evening of sports and movies on TV. This is what we wanted and exactly what we got. The owners were excellent to work with as well.

Spacious, cozy cabin with everything you need

  • 5 of 5

This cabin had everything we wanted: quiet and comfort. Also, two bathrooms and two bedrooms, invaluable when one person gets sick. There are lots of wildlife trails within immediate driving distance, and my partner and I saw lots of wildlife, which was our goal. The kitchen is equipped simply, but nicely, and we enjoyed great rainbow trout breakfasts and dinners caught in the nearby stream. Everything is spotlessly clean, and Donna is super-prompt in responding and very helpful. Two couples would be comfortable here, and that, of course, would make it much cheaper. I had fun taming the very shy nearby horses by feeding them a couple apples or carrots a day. Anyone who considers renting this should be aware that this is NOT a cabin in the woods, as many reviews here point out. Luckily, though, there was no one around during the week and it was very quiet on the weekend too, so everything worked out well. The dredging of the nearby river, a historical sight, that is being reclaimed, shows you how hard gold-mining was on the land.

Owner's Response: Thank you for staying with us at the Yankee Fork Retreat. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. We do try our best to maintain everything and keep the cabin clean. To us we have always looked at the cabin as being in the Challis National Forest and the mountains and national forest are on 2 sides of the Cabin. But we don't want to deceive anyone so I will change the Listing Description to Cabin on the Yankee Fork Road. In a minute or 2 people will be climbing the trails in the woods beside or behind us or they can take their ATV's into the Frank Church Wilderness just a could of miles up the road. So thank you for pointing that out to us. Please come again.

Attractive, comfortable, serene

  • 4 of 5

The furnishings, the comfortable beds, linens, kitchen supplies and the cleanliness of the house get an A+. We loved it and highly recommend it. That being said, our initial impression was one of great disappointment as we felt we had been misled by the advertising. The "curb" appeal is sorely lacking. In the picture the home appears to be in a forest which is why we chose it - to be out in nature. Although the back drop is a wooded area, the view from the front porch sadly is clear cut forest. The "impressionistic" welcome we got at one of the entrances was of a "neighborhood" of rusted vehicles on cinderblocks. Again the visual was disturbing and contrasts with the expectation from the photos. This being said, once we settled in, we enjoyed ourselves. The house has an extraordinary floor plan that allowed the two of us to get lost in our own activities and meet up in the kitchen for evening Scrabble. Problems: We visited during an unseasonal hot spell and there was no AC- which we did not expect to have considering the geography. But on arrival, the temperature of the house was unbearable. We did not open the doors and windows because it was near 100 degrees outside. With fans going - they are in every room - we eventually could sit comfortably only in the bedrooms at the back of the house. By keeping most of the windows open during the night, we alleviated that problem for the rest of our stay (Unfortunately, the window in our bedroom - guest room - was too difficult to open and close that we didn't use it after the first night.) Recommendations: A dimmer for the chandelier above the dining room table would be helpful as we were "blinded" by the light. But we simply unscrewed half the bulbs and we were happy. Also, parental controls were on the TV so we could not watch the few shows we like. Especially since it was the week of the Democratic convention and we would have liked to viewed the coverage on Comedy Central. We visited the cafe down the road several times - the food was great and the owners and their family were greater. We were so impressed with the friendliness of the people in this area. We hiked every day in magnificent forests, up to glaciers, and swam in pristine lakes. We had a five star vacation and the house is a five star house, but sadly in a two star vista. Also, we were not at all happy with Homeway. However, Donna, the owner picked up the slack and was helpful and gracious.

Owner's Response: Hello Sydney We are happy that you enjoyed your stay at our Cabin. We love it and wish we had more time to stay. It is a beautiful area. We try very hard to make our cabin as Comfortable as possible and a clean as possible. So please let me address some of your issues. First is was very hot when you came in July and we do have A/C but we were waiting on the repair person to come and service it. We rarely have to use it so we were unaware it needed to be serviced. Because it is in a rural area it is hard to get them to come to the cabin. It is working now and is very cold. We have been working with the county about the neighbor down the road, but we have our own entrance and do not come it that way. That is her private drive. The woods across the road in front of the Cabin is not clear cut but from a fire years ago and the forest is coming back. We do have the National Forest behind the cabin and to the NE of the cabin. There are lots of hiking and riding to be down within just a few minutes. So thank you again for staying .

Really cute

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was beautiful and very well put together. It was very clean but very comfortable. The surrounding area was beautiful with wild life rivers and ponds. The area was ATV friendly and had some great trails to ride on. At night the sky lighted up as I laid in the hammock and watched our campfire. It was a great stay.

Sit back and relax on the wrap around deck. Or sit around the fire pit at night and enjoy the sounds of the wilderness. Climb the mountain trails. Ride your atv's or motor bikes, fish in the yankee fork of the salmon river or fly fish in the dreage ponds.. Or soak in the natural hot springs . Raft the world famous salmon river- 'river of no return'. Hunt for big game. Deer, elk, moose, bear, mountain lion we have them all.. Watch the fox play in the front yard. Visit the ghost towns of custer and bonaza just 3 miles up the road. See the yankee fork dreage and learn how gold was found in days gone by. Or just watch the bald eagles fight over the steel head in the ponds. Or better yet fish for those very same steelhead or salmon that return every year. Or the rainbow trout. Visit one of the 300 alpine lakes in the snra just south on highway 75. Or see the sun rise on the sawtooth mountains.
