Your private retreat on the beach at Paradise Cove

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

3 bedroom, 2 bathroom on its own beach with mountain and glacier views.

Give yourself the gift of staying in one of the most beautiful locations in the world. The Paradise Cove house is set on its own secluded beach at Paradise Cove with breathtaking views of Rainbow Glacier and the snowcapped peaks of the Chilkat mountain range. Would you like to get away from the incessant chatter and demands of the 'outside' world? Here's a place where there is peace.

The charming, rustic house is sided with hand-split cedar shakes. Inside, it is spacious and sunny. The open plan downstairs allows for a pleasant flow of spaces. It has a fully equipped kitchen and a dining room with an amazing view.

A special feature of the house is that as well as the main house there is the attached annex with its light-filled sunroom. The main house and annex allow for separation for two parties or two families who are sharing the rental.

The two newly remodeled bathrooms in the house offer modern fixtures. There is one bathroom in the main house and one in the annex, affording privacy for two parties sharing the house. The main house bathroom offers both a shower and a tub. The annex bathroom provides a shower with built-in seat.

Upstairs in the main house there is a queen bed in the master bedroom. The smaller upstairs bedroom has both a queen bed and a single bed.

The entire upstairs of the annex is a spacious bedroom with a queen sized bed, a rocking chair and a loveseat. Both the main house master bedroom and the annex bedroom have spectacular views.

Two Pack n' Play baby beds are available to accommodate little ones.

This is an Alaskan family house that is comfortable, spacious and well-heated, and offers all the amenities you need for an enjoyable stay.

The primary attraction of the house is its location on a private beach many think is the most beautiful in the Haines area.

You can fish from the beach in front of the house. If you bring your own sea kayak or rent one from a local company, you can launch from the beach and paddle down the peninsula to Chilkat Islands Marine Park.

Children enjoy the opportunity to play and run barefoot on the large lawn or sit on the grass. You can also sit in the comfortable chairs provided on the lawn and enjoy the view, or barbecue outdoors using the large Weber grill. Beyond the lawn on the beach you can sit around the campfire, toast marshmallows, and watch for the marine mammals that swim in to the bay - seals, sea lions, our resident otters, porpoise, and even whales.

Just over 6 miles from downtown Haines, Alaska, the Paradise Cove house is a five minute drive from the Chilkat State Park which has some of the best hiking trails in the area as well as a boat launch ramp.

Children are welcome at the Paradise Cove house. Sorry, but we can't accommodate pets.

To find the dates the Paradise Cove house is available that best work with your plans, please look at the calendar. It is updated regularly. Cancellations do occur, so if the dates you want show as booked, it's worth checking back to see if they have opened up.

Please note that rent is $50/person/night with a $200/night minimum. We are required by law to charge 8% tax.

About Cecily

Your hosts live on Paradise Cove a few minutes' walk from the Paradise Cove House. We enjoy the outdoor recreational opportunities available here. This is our home base, but we travel widely to both remote rural places and bustling, cosmopolitan cities. We like gaining the perspective travel gives us on our home and our way of living.

Why Cecily chose Haines

The Paradise Cove House was built by the current owner's family, and he grew up there. The family hand-split the thick cedar shakes that protect the outside of the house and give it such special character. The flower and vegetable gardens were carved out of the wilderness soil and are still thriving. Together, the family planted the orchards of cherry, plum and apple trees that produce delicious fruit each year.

This house has a tradition of being a welcoming place, where friends and neighbors could always find a cup of coffee and a piece of pie.

Now we continue that tradition of Alaskan hospitality by welcoming to this warm and happy home the visitors who come to enjoy the marvelous scenery and activities this area has to offer.

What makes this house unique

The Paradise Cove House harks back to a simpler, and some would say a better, time. The house provides guests more than a homey and comfortable place to stay. It offers the opportunity to experience an Alaskan lifestyle. You can use the WiFi or watch a DVD on one of the house's two television sets. Television programming is not available, but the house is provided with a large collection of movies and more may be checked out in town. The well-stocked bookshelves offer an eclectic variety of reading material. You can enjoy the puzzles and board games available in the house. The spotting scope and binoculars provided invite you to notice the wildlife outside your windows.

You can relax indoors or laze on the lawn or beach. You can pursue any of a wide variety of outdoor activities. Whatever you do it will be real, and you will do it yourself or with the person (people) you've chosen to share this experience.

We offer you an experience that is unique in today's world, the qualities we value most about this lifestyle: connection with a place of incomparable natural beauty; connection with each other; connection with yourself. Serenity.

Because of the delightful, authentic lifestyle this place offers, you will remember your time at the Paradise Cove house as we do: fondly, and perhaps forever.

We have a generous custom cancellation policy. If the house rebooks for your dates, payment will be refunded less $100 booking fee. If the house does not rebook, payment may be applied toward a future stay within one year of original reservation date, less $200 cancellation fee, and subject to availability and current rates.

If the house rebooks for only some of the days you reserved, you will be charged half our minimum rental fee for each unbooked night - $100/night plus the 8% borough tax.

PLEASE NOTE: VRBO charges guests an administrative fee that goes to VRBO, not the owners. VRBO’S fee is refunded separately.

Spotting scope; binoculars; well-stocked bookshelves; puzzles and games; lawn chairs and beach for outdoor meals; some balls, etc. for outdoor play; campfire site on beach. If you bring or rent your own kayak, you can launch it from the beach in front of the house. Because the Paradise Cove house is more than six miles from city water service, the water for the house comes from a well on the property. The well can accommodate all the bathing and cooking needs of guests, but frequent loads of laundry could overtax the water supply. We're sorry that we can't offer guests laundry facilities, but we do offer an authentic and comfortable experience of life in rural Alaska. We recommend that guests use the Moose Horn Laundromat in town, a clean and well-equipped laundromat with a pleasant waiting area and a gift shop.

Glorious and peaceful vacation home!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at the home on Paradise Cove. We felt like we were coming home this time, when we came to stay for a week. It is only about a 10 minute drive down Mud Bay Rd from Haines, and it is a quiet and lovely getaway. The Paradise Bay home is spacious and clean. Everything is provided that you might need in the kitchen for home cooking during your vacation meals; after dinner, you can move down to the rocky shore to the fire pit for a gathering around the fire. Thank-you Cecily, for sharing your Alaskan homestead!

Quaint house in the perfect location!!!!

  • 5 of 5

This was absolutely the best vacation! The house is in a perfect location, and it seems like you can't get enough of the matter what room the views are amazing! We got the chance to see two moose one of the mornings while eating breakfast. We had 7 guests 1year old to 85 year old and was perfect for everyone. Would highly recommend to anyone in the Haines area!

The home was very nice, clean and had everything that you would need. The views are stunning, the location is great for relaxing, viewing wildlife, go fishing, sitting on the beach chair reading a book. And there are enough books, you can read!!. We did a lot of cooking, and appreciated the cookware and cutlery.

The house is close enough to Haines to visit, but away from all the crowds.

We would recommend this place, thank you for a great stay! We very much enjoyed our five nights at Paradise Cove.

10 days in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we walked thru the door at Paradise Cove House, we felt right at home. That view! Oh, that view - it surrounds you and you can't help but be affected by it. We chose to sleep in the annex bedroom due to the bed being situated as to take in that view from the time you went to sleep until the time you woke up in the morning. We saw a family of otters right off the beach, eagles soaring overhead, a hawk chasing a pair of jays from tree to tree, and of course, the stunning Rainbow Glacier and its waterfall ever present across the cove. Haines is a lovely, small town with friendly folks and excellent food. Daily trips to the Chilkoot River/Lake rewarded us with sightings of their famous brown bears feeding at the fish weir and along the river. What a thrill! From kayaking on Chilkoot Lake, a day trip on the fast ferry to Skagway to take the train up into the Yukon, to a drive up the magnificent Haines Highway, each of our 10 night stay was an adventure just waiting to happen. We had a visit from a bear behind the house the second night there, and finally saw the local moose and her calf one evening just down the road from the house. While the weather was less than ideal - we had rain every day, with breaks of sun and clouds now and again, we were prepared with the proper rain gear and didn't miss a beat. The rain didn't affect our enjoyment of the house or the activities Haines had to offer. Try the delicious salami/onion pizza at the Fireweed, or the fantastic homemade fudge from Alaska Rod's, and don't forget the fresh baked sourdough bread from the Pilot Light Bakery and Restaurant. A visit to the Haines Brewing Company and the Haines Distillery are a must. We added a new growler to our Alaska growler collection to bring home. Our hostess, Cecily, couldn't have been more responsive - before leaving home, she answered all email inquiries quickly and efficiently, providing all the details we needed to make this trip so memorable. It was a pleasure to meet you, Cecily, and all your recommendations were spot on. This home away from home was a perfect blend of rustic and modern that fit our vacation expectations perfectly. Thank you Cecily and Mark for sharing your beautiful homestead with us, we hope to be back someday in the future. Haines, Alaska is the quintessential small town with mountains, ocean, glaciers and wildlife - so many recreational activities right at your fingertips. Yup, we'll be back! :)

Great house with amazing views!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic time on our trip. The house is great and is an amazing property. The views are by far the best in Haines! The house was well appointed and is a great setup for two couples. The owners were available but not overbearing which is exactly what we like. I would not hesitate to recommend this house to friends and family!

Car: necessary

The Paradise Cove House is just over 6 miles from downtown Haines. Haines is a small community at the head of the Inside Passage. The town is surrounded by mountains rising up to 7,000 feet above the fjord.

In town there is an amazingly good library that was named the Best Small Library in America by the Library Journal in 2005. Free Internet service and an extensive collection of books, magazines and DVDs are available at the library.

Haines has an excellent small museum that provides the visitor with a good sense of the history of the area, and offers shows of work by local artists.

The Chilkat Center for the Arts in the historic Port Chilkoot area of town offers a variety of performances sponsored by the Haines Arts Council.

The town of Haines affords all the facilities needed for a stay in the area: grocery stores, including Mountain Market, an organic food store and cafe; restaurants; a laundromat; a bank with an ATM; medical services at the clinic; and shops selling outdoor equipment and local arts and crafts.

The Extreme Dreams gallery is a short walk from the Paradise Cove House and displays for view and purchase the work of a diverse group of local artists.

The Chilkat State Park is a five minute drive from the Paradise Cove House, and offers some of the area's best hiking trails as well as a boat launch ramp.

There are lakes in the area where you can go canoeing or kayaking, gliding silently by the banks where you may see moose or even bears. The valley's rivers offer rafting and river kayaking opportunities. And you can launch your sea kayak from the beach at the Paradise Cove House.

Fishing for salmon or Dolly Varden Arctic char in season is readily accessible on the fjords, the Chilkat and Chilkoot Rivers, and the lakes. Fishing charters are available.

The quiet roads with little traffic are perfect for carefree bicycling, and there are many routes on rougher tracks where mountain biking can be enjoyed.

Local tour guides offer biking, hiking, sea-kayaking, river rafting and wildlife-viewing tours.

Whether you like hiking, biking, kayaking, canoeing, or just relaxing in a comfortable chair and enjoying the long, late light, summer is a perfect time to visit. The meadows and shorelines are blooming with a riot of wildflowers.

Haines hosts the Southeast Alaska State Fair in late July, with live music, displays of regional garden produce and animals, programs and rides for kids. Year-round the fairgrounds are home to galleries, a restaurant and the award winning Haines Brewing Company micro-brewery.

In the fall months, Haines is home to the largest gathering of bald eagles anywhere in the world. Photographers, birdwatchers and naturalists come from many countries to view the large numbers of these magnificent birds in their beautiful setting, along the pristine Chilkat River. The fall Bald Eagle festival features talks and programs about the eagles.
