About the Property

One bedroom with queen bed downstairs and 4 single bed sleeping loft up.

Cave Hill Dodge Cabin features a massive stone fireplace and a spacious deck overlooking woods and a pond. You will love that it is located on a secluded, private and quiet 20 acre farm, out of sight of any other buildings.

One of our guests said: "After a very hectic week, it was so nice to be able to relax together at the Dodge Cabin with our two furry kids. The dogs loved running in the fields - you could almost see smiles on their faces. Thank you for being dog-friendly!!! And the cabin had just about everything we needed. Loved, loved the beautiful stone fireplace! It was a beautiful, clean place and I would love to visit again. Thanks for sharing your home with us!!!"

Sleeps 6 guests.

Downstairs is a private bedroom with queen bed
Upstairs loft -- 4 twin beds

One bathroom -- with tub shower.

Pet friendly. Your dog will enjoy romping and exploring the woods and fields surrounding the cabin.

Amenities. We offer amenities comparable to a boutique hotel – crisp hand ironed sheets and pillow cases, handsome comforters on the beds, fluffy towels and natural soap. We do our own laundry, without the harsh chemicals and industrial finishing of a commercial laundry.

Cozy living room with fireplace. Relax in the living room before a sparkling fire, surrounded by warm pine paneling. We supply local seasoned hand split hardwood, kindling, newspaper and fire lighter.

Fully equipped kitchen. Prepare your family meals in our well stocked kitchen. We include flatware and china, wine glasses, coffee maker and filters.

Dining room seats 6 guests. Enjoy your meals gathered around the magnificent Ethan Allen maple dining room table . . . or make it a game table or jigsaw puzzling table for great family memories.

Free WiFi for email or light browsing; not for streaming movies or the like.

Entertainment. We have a flat screen TV with satellite service and a DVD player. Bring your own movies.

Deck. Out on the deck overlooking the pond and the woods is a gas grill and table and chairs for dining and lounging. Have your meals on the sun-dappled deck (weather permitting). We do not have a hot tub.

Outdoor fire rings. In the evening, start a fire in the fire pit by the cabin or the one by the barn and roast marshmallows. Star gaze from the big field next to the cabin, where the Milky Way shines across the sky.

Immerse yourself in nature. Your children will be intrigued to stay in a cabin surrounded by woods, and to sleep in the loft overlooking the fireplace. Stroll over to the log barn where you enjoy a spectacular view of the Appalachian foothills in the distance. Walk up our woodland path to the cave. Bring a flashlight to explore the cave.

About Adams County:
Adams County is one of the most beautifully scenic counties in Ohio. The Great Serpent Mound is the largest effigy mound in the country. The Amish community offers shops and tidy well kept farms. The southern boundary is the Ohio River, with gorgeous views, fishing and boating. Nature Conservancy’s Edge of Appalachia Preserve and numerous state natural areas showcase the county’s unique features.

Suggested activities:
Visit the Great Serpent Mound and its visitor center. Check out the Wheat Ridge Amish community shops and well kept farms. Travel the Quilt Barn Trail and see the rural countryside by car. Follow the ride of Confederate John Hunt Morgan and his Raiders through Adams County in 1863.
In neighboring Brown County, visit the boyhood home of US Grant in Georgetown; see where Liza reportedly crossed the Ohio River on the ice in Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Visit the Rankin House above the Ripley bluff, where lanterns hung to guide slaves escaping across the river from Kentucky.

Hike in one of the many nature preserves and natural areas in Adams County. Our favorites include Chaparral Prairie (a remnant prairie a mile away). Buzzardsroost Trail (a moderately strenuous hike in the Edge of Appalachia Preserve) and Davis Memorial Nature Preserve (features a pristine stream, high rock cliffs and a geologic fault in the cliff face).

Enjoy birding on our farm or in the nature preserves.

Fish our pond (catch and release only), the ponds in Tranquility Natural Area, Adams Lake State Park, Ohio Brush Creek or the Ohio River.

Have dinner at Murphin Ridge Inn or Moyer Winery. Murphin Ridge is an excellent restaurant in an old farm house near the Amish community. Moyer offers fine food in a dining room overlooking the Ohio River.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 2003

About the owner: I am a retired lawyer turned carpenter and innkeeper. I grew up in Cincinnati and have lived there all my life. As a young man I lived in the country outside of town, surrounded by woods and fields. After 30 years in an office, I have returned to my roots.

Why the Owner Chose West Union, OH, USA:
We bought 25 vacant acres in Winchester, Adams County, Ohio in 1991. In 2003 when I retired we bought this cabin on adjoining land as well as a half-finished house on the other side of the original farm. I finished the one a couple of years ago. See VRBO #413188. I have just completed remodeling this cabin, which was built by one of my law partners in the 1970's Both were labors of love.

The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
All the comforts of home in a rustic cabin with oak floors and a big stone fireplace. Modern kitchen and bath, electric heat and air conditioning. Very private location. The deck overlooking the pond is delightful. If you have a large group, some could stay here and more in our large lodge, VRBO 413188, about a 1/4 mile up the hill either on the farm gravel road or up the path through the woods past the cave.
