Frontier Store House - With a historic cabin inside the inviting home…

Bedrooms 2
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

2 bedroom, 2 bathroom in the Flint Hills of Chase County

Built between Scenic By-way #177 and the BNSF tracks the Frontier Store House in Matfield Green is as peaceful as can be. It started as a log cabin in 1868. Town “developer” David Mercer, after whom a nearby creek was named, built it and ran a frontier store and post office; a few years later, a stone room was added. Both the log cabin and stone room were preserved when, in the late 1880s, a two-story addition was created.

After having stood empty for more than 40 years, the Frontier Store House was beautifully restored and renewed, and became a comfortable very well insulated family retreat and guest house.

Only steps away from the tallgrass prairie and open range cattle country, this home away from home is perfect for long weekends and vacations.

Ready for a Flint Hills adventure? The tallgrass prairie surrounding Matfield Green is a national treasure worth discovering. Just north of the little town you will find Pioneer Bluffs historic ranch and The Gallery at Pioneer Bluffs. The Tallgrass Prairie Preserve is 20 miles north in Strong City. Cottonwood Falls is also worth your visit; check out the historic courthouse and don't forget to climb the stairs to the old jail. West of Cottonwood Falls you'll find Chase State Fishing Lake.

A wonderful daytrip is a visit to the Flint Hills Discovery Center in Manhattan, KS. Lots of informative displays and educational exhibits and a great short film about the Flint Hills will keep you captive. Just follow # 177 north.

You'll find restaurants and groceries in Strong City and Cottonwood Falls as well as in El Dorado and Emporia.

Cozy home perfect for what we needed it for!

  • 5 of 5

This home was very charming and had everything we needed for our stay! All the appliances and everything in the home worked perfectly. For a family or two couples, this place is perfect. We will book again in the future.

Perfect Little House on the Praire!!!!

  • 5 of 5

Traveled back in time with all the modern conveniences! Pampered with so many amenities. No detail is overlooked in this immaculate charming cottage. There are teas, cocoa, pancakes, all kinds of baking supplies including the flour and sugars, baking powder, spices, aprons, more. The incredible blue grass CD tells tales of the history of chase county even about the ghost town of Bazaar. The cottage has been restored with authentic kansas style/wood. Even the appliances are antique including toaster and the old waffle iron in the hutch - plus they are electric. There are crock pots. Every detail is met down to fine antique China and silver flatware just like grandma's! There are enen chilled glass drinking mugs ing the freezer. The lighting fixtures must be original they match the local Spring Hill Ranch from the same time period of this store. Also, It looks like there is an old sewing machine and sewing supplies upstairs for your prairie projects, and I noticed a material shop in Cottonwood Falls next to the great antique shops. Heat and air are new and work great. Hot water tank is in the cabinet next to it and there are instructions to turn it on by flipping a switch. No car traffic is on the highway in the evening and nobody out there so the porch swing was so serene. Enjoyed the special art prints of the historic chase county courthouse. Truly the most special little house on the prairie! We would have loved a back patio with a grill. Had to grill at the park and the lake but that was a good chance to see those. Loved it and all of Chase County!

Great romantic getaway place if you’re looking to unplug from the phone and TV. But don’t expect delivery-you’re probably doing most of your own cooking.

Great getaway

  • 5 of 5

Quiet, homey and efficient. Big enough for two couples, but not oversized for one person. I loved the peace and quiet. Coffee on the porch swing in the morning sunshine was a wonderful treat.

Frontier Store House is a great place to stay.

  • 4 of 5

This was the second time we had stayed at Frontier Store House while we were in the Flint Hills for photo workshops. If the occasion arrises again we would look forward to staying there again. Next time we will know to turn on the hot water heater when we arrive.

Nice historic property, but the train noise was a dealbreaker

  • 3 of 5

My wife and I came for the Flames in the Flint Hills weekend. Our first choice, the Prairieside Cottage, was already booked, so we chose this. The property was nicely furnished and the kitchen is well-stocked. Both the upstairs and downstairs beds were a little firm for our taste. Upstairs jet tub is very nice; the downstairs shower is tight quarters and dark. There is a very nice sound system in the downstairs closet and the speakers placed throughout the downstairs sound great. There are some CDs, including some local bluegrass music worth checking out. If you like it, the CDs are available for sale in the gallery next door, where the property manager is nice and knowledgeable about the area. We ate dinner up the road at Ad Astra in Strong City, which I highly recommend. Matfield Green is very small town on 177 with no services. If you need any supplies, expect to drive to Cottonwood Falls where there's a Dollar General and other shops.

As others have mentioned, there's a very bright light from the railroad off next door which leaks into the downstairs bedroom. Fortunately, they have good light-blocking shades. Our biggest issue was the train noise, which kept me and my wife up until 3am on our first night. This isn't the soothing sound of trains in the distance. The tracks are right behind the house and every 20 minutes there's a low rumble which goes on all night. I even tried moving to the upstairs loft bedroom, which was not any better. We actually considered driving to Emporia, but we stuck it out! The second night, I popped in my earplugs and a Tylenol PM and slept better. If it weren't for the train noise, I'd stay here again, but it was pretty much a dealbreaker for us - you either love it or you hate it. Our only other issue was that we couldn't get the free wi-fi to work. The password is on the kitchen table, but we could never get connected.

Nice historic property, but if you even think the train noise might bother you, I'd look for other lodging in the area.
