Our family of twelve traveled to Honomu right after the largest hurricane the island had seen in over 150 years. We almost canceled, but this trip was a once‑in‑a‑lifetime “final hurrah” for my in‑laws, who rarely travel and don’t plan to fly again. When the airline confirmed it was safe, we decided to go — not realizing the island would be without power for several days.Even with a 3–4 day outage, this stay became one of the most meaningful vacations we’ve ever had. The home is beautiful, full of natural light, and surprisingly comfortable even without electricity. We spent our days enjoying the property, cooking on the barbecue, using ice chests, talking, laughing, and truly reconnecting as a family. It felt like “mansion camping,” and somehow it was perfect. Our host was incredible. They checked in often, opened an extra room for us, kept us updated on the local situation, and even had a neighbor stop by to welcome us and share where we could find internet and supplies. As soon as the weather cleared, they sent someone to clean the pools so we could enjoy the outdoor space. Their kindness made a challenging situation feel safe and supported. When the power finally returned, the host generously extended our stay for free, allowing us to fully enjoy the home. Despite the hurricane, this was one of my favorite vacations ever. The house was amazing, the host was amazing,My kids are already begging to return and missing the stuffed animal turtles!
