Midcentury Modern Masterpiece - 4bedroom Home in Whanganui
This iconic 1960 family home was designed by local architect Don Wilson, a student of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The midcentury modern design features a cantilevered terrace, non-load bearing exterior walls, floor-to-ceiling windows, and built-in furniture. It has been beautifully maintained and tastefully restored, with original features like the stereogram, curved wooden panelling and louvered windows. The Wilson House won the 2014 NZIA Enduring Architecture award.
The house is shaped like an "H" - upstairs on one wing are three of the bedrooms. The master bedroom (king) has an ensuite. The kitchen and living areas are on the other side of the house, and open up onto the deck. Downstairs is the fourth bedroom (queen) with an adjoining bathroom, a dedicated workspace, and TV room.

We found the accommodations very comfortable, clean and suited all ojur needs. The house had plenty of room and the kitchen very well equiped for all our cooking requirements.
The kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms were well stocked, set up perfectly. Wood burned well in the hallway fire. Blankets gave us warmth in the main lounge.
Really amazing house - beautifully maintained in its original ‘60’s condition, loads of well designed space, with a great feel to it. Handy location.Hannah was an amazing host, nothing seemed to be too much trouble. Super impressed.
We had a fantastic stay at this unique mid-century home — full of character, beautifully styled, and incredibly comfortable. It was a truly memorable and relaxing experience.

Such a cool piece of architecture to stay in, absolutely loved it. Close to town and the lake is just across the roadreally, but not too close to neighbours and set well back from the road. Beautifully curated with some classic nostalgic gems and also there's some really nice books to read. Couch upstairs is not only gorgeous to look at but also to sit or lie on. Comfy beds, luxurious sheets, electric blankets on all beds (thank you Hannah!) and beautiful old school woolen blankets everywhere. The wee fire place does a sterling job, if I'd had a magic wand I would've zjojed up a clutch of beanbags to loll about in in front of the fire, but then we may never have got done as much sightseeing as we did :)A truly memorable place to stay for my wee belated hens gathering.
This is a fantastic home, it is a well preserved, architecturally designed in the early 1960s. The eight 70 -80 year olds staying were delighted to enjoy the period furniture, we loved the round dining table, the Swedish furniture and the open fire. A great 3 days stay in Whanganui.
Beautifully maintained and true to its original. It was clean warm and comfortable. We enjoyed browsing the collection of architecture and design books. Hannah made the process easy.
When I drove up the driveway I couldn’t believe how beautiful the home is! I love mid-century modern architecture, and to me this is like staying in the very best kind of historic home. The place is pretty faithful to its original state, with only minor changes (like a more modern oven plus a dishwasher). Check-in was easy, wifi was good, and the hosts were easy to deal with.
The house accommodated our group of 6 well in June. The double bedrooms were comfy and the electric blankets appreciated. We did not cook at the house, but the kitchen seemed well equipped. The woodburner in the hallway warmed the living areas on the first floor, but we kept the bedroom doors shut, where we used electric heaters. The couple who stayed downstairs found it cold at this time of year. The house is a few kms from town, so we chose to drive. It was very near Virginia Lake and that was beautiful. Overall a great stay in this architecturally fascinating house. We suggest putting a sign on the lounge fireplace as it is not in use.
