About the host

Although a Canadian citizen, until we bought this cottage in Southampton, I hadn't lived in Ontario, for over 35 years.
From Parkhill, just a couple hours south, after going to high school in Kitchener and college in Winnipeg, I moved to Haiti, and thus began my life overseas...moving to Boston area for abit and then back to Kitchener for a few years, before taking our young family (3 kids under 5) to Bangkok Thailand, and Taichung Taiwan...landing in the states at the turn of the millennium ...first Maine, then New York, Maryland and now splitting time between the cottage and Florida. (We have grandkids in both places :))
I love everything about what is retreat for me but in particular, my runs on the shores of the lake, coffee on my front porch and the kindnesses of my neighbors, who I love to share fresh baked good with.
I'm happy to share it, when I can't be there, with those that are seeking a place where I hope you will feel "hugged" by the warmth and sturdiness of the hewn logs that I do each time I walk in.

Why they chose this property
With a daughter and her family being in Listowel, we were seeking a vacation home that wasn't too far from them....and she highly suggested Southampton, and I'm so glad she did.
I love the neighborhood....a lovely mix of retirees and young families, all who look out for each other.
We're on a quiet street (corner lot) literally a 5 minute walk to the Saugeen River (where you often see folks throwing in a reel fishing and you can launch a kayak) and 5 minutes in the other direction you are at the mouth of the river that feeds into the beautiful Lake Huron...which I so enjoy taking my runs by.
It is a place where I enjoy hosting family and friends.
It is, for me, pure serenity.
And, bonus? For the first time ever, we are literally across the street from Foodland, where you can get everything you need/forgot from home.
Not to mention that the main beach at the end of Front St (by the giant flag) in downtown Southampton is literally .7 miles away...with shopping and restaurants (and ice cream) en route to the beach.

What makes this property unique
Well, it being made of rough hewn logs makes it rather unique in and of itself. Like I said above, I feel that the logs embrace you with the warmest welcome the very moment you walk in the door.
We're a corner lot that has a large private back yard, with a 7 foot "privacy" hedge. Features that I particularly love about the back yard is the fire pit and, a laundry line, which may not be considered an "amenity" but I absolutely love having and use fully when there.
The proximity to the river, lake and downtown, and Foodland is most appealing and previously noted.
There's nothing like starting the day with a cup of coffee on the covered front porch and do some bird and people watching. Frankly, any time of day on the front porch is good time well spent.
