About Susan Garner

My husband and I are environmental geologists. We knew we would love any waterfront property in the San Juan Islands. We didn't realize when we bought the house that we have one of the best beaches on Orcas at the bottom of our stairs. We still marvel at the lovely view of Mt Baker from the beach, the fabulous bald eagles flying over our heads, and the way my son can't be beat in rock skipping contests.

Susan Garner purchased this house in 2002

Why Susan Garner chose Eastsound

We love our house on Orcas and hope you do too. We've had friends tell us it's the best vacation they've ever had. We've spent our entire summer on Orcas for over 10 years. I think you'll find that our house does not feel like a "typical" rental property. It feels more like a home. The house is located in the historic Buckhorn Lodge and Beach area. At low tide you can walk, although sometimes scrambling over rocks, for several miles on the beach. There are also great tide pools during low tide.

I love to sit on the deck and just soak in the view. We have a pair of bald eagles that fish from a tree on our property.

The kids love building forts on the beach with all the drift wood, collecting sea glass and shells and of course roasting marshmallows at evening beach fires. Plus, we have a tree house complete with a "draw bridge."

What makes this house unique

If you like bird watching, we have a great bird feeder that attracts lots of local birds. The humming birds love the blackberry bushes. You will definitely hear pleated woodpeckers and if you're lucky you'll see one land on the tree right in front of the deck.

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for a wonderful rental property! We loved it and it was perfect for our family. It was clean and comfortable! We loved the view from upstairs and down! It was gorgeous. We had great weather and we really enjoyed the beach. It included lots of skipping rock competitions. :) We will definitely come here again!

Great house, perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful view of Sucia and Matia islands off the back porch with Vancouver in the distance. We were two couples, travelling with a 2 and 12 yr old and found the house to be the perfect size; remote and secluded yet minutes from town. The water in this bit of cove was calm and protected from the wind, and we spent hours in the kayaks (the kids included) each day paddling around with the local seals and porpoises (we even saw a pod of whales in the distance one day!).

The pebble beach below the house is quiet and secluded and has many items for the kids to explore. Starfish, anemones, crabs and other creatures all accessible at low tide. Halfway down the path to the beach is a neat little treehouse complete with drawbridge that the kids absolutely loved.

The house itself had everything we needed (even an electric piano for those of us who play). Great deck for reading a book with a cup of coffee in the morning (and for us, during naptime), barbecuing in the evening and sipping wine while the sun sets. I genuinely can't wait to come back here; this was one of the most peaceful and relaxing vacations ever, within easy distance of hiking, horseback riding, fresh oyster feasts, fine dining, whale watching... the list goes on!

Perfect Orcas Spot!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our Orcas visit and a lot of the reason was how lovely this home was to stay in. We had a group of 4 adults and 4 small children (1.5, 4, 5 and 7) and it was perfect for us. The views and the beach were gorgeous and the comfortable home with comfy beds, videos, games, toys, well stocked kitchen etc. went above what we were expecting. Not to mention the awesome treehouse and rope swing. Sue the owner as well as her local contact person were wonderful and responsive and made us really feel at home. Can't wait to come back next summer. Thank you!

Fabulous location!

  • 4 of 5

We had a great week on Orcas Island and this house is perfectly located, close to the main shopping and restaurants but in a quiet area. Note that the steps from the beach are rather steep, uneven and rough. The elderly or anyone with a disability would not make the climb back up to the house. And I really don't recommend going near the rope swing because at low tide you can see all the rocks that normally hide beneath the water making it a highly risky prospect.

The house is lovely and has a wonderful deck area that we thoroughly enjoyed. Bed mattresses are old and could be uncomfortable with dips and bulges but then nothing is ever as comfortable as your own bed. The outdated TV in the living room has a bad, fuzzy picture but we were there to explore so didn't really mind. Shelves and other surfaces were dusty but overall the house was clean and had everything we could possibly need. It was nice to find that essentials such as toilet paper, paper towels, cling wrap, etc. were provided.

Overall a nice rental and a wonderful island vacation!

Owner's Response: Hi Karen, Thank you for your review. I take feed back seriously. I like my guests to be comfortable and happy. Not sure which bed you slept in, 2 of the queen mattresses are fairly new. I'll put replacing the other at the top of my list and I'll let my housekeeper know about the dust on the bookshelves. I do apologize for the downstairs TV..isn't it considered retro? We never watch TV on the island. Guess it's time for an upgrade😊 Best..Sue

Perfect for us!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay on Orcas. The home and property were perfect for our family.

The home was very comfortable, had wonderful views, and was very well equipped from cooking to books and toys for the kids. Our kids (9,12,14) especially loved the rope swing and treehouse. The location was ideal and though there are other homes in the area, it felt secluded due to the heavy foliage. As other reviewers have noted, we ended up spending a significant amount of time at the house because we enjoyed it so much. We would love to return some day.

The owner, Sue, was easy to work with and prompt with all follow up.

It's easy to let the days melt away reading a book on our deck, watching bald eagles fly by, and looking out across the water to views of Canada and nearby Matia Island. You can reach our property by boat. We have a mooring bouy. One of the most popular salmon fishing areas is in our cove and there is excellent crabing at nearby Sucia Island. The waters off our beach are also great for kayaking.

Enjoy hiking and swimming at nearby Moran State Park and visit the many artisan studios on the island. Catch a whale watching boat at the Ferry Landing or Deer Harbor and see the magnificent resident Orca whale pods that call Puget Sound their home.
