About the host
Hosted by John Ahrens
I grew up in suburban Detroit and have spent the last 16 years living in Brooklyn, NY. I wanted to return to Detroit for my retirement, and to be part of its long-awaited renaissance. Detroit is very much an underestimated city. Everyone I have ever invited to come here has loved it - one friend even bought a house of his own here.
I am very ecological and environmentally minded. I acknowledge that not everyone shares that passion and commitment, so I have tried to make my accommodations suitable for all. I chose eco-friendly products for use by guests and for the cleaning of the unit after their departure. I provide access to recycling and composting facilities for those guests who support such activities.
I graduated from Michigan State University (Go Green!) with degrees in Fisheries and Wildlife Management and Zoology, so this has long been a passion and commitment of mine. I served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Uganda for two years and have also lived in Los Angeles for 13 years prior to the "great recession".
I have a french bulldog, Nettie, who you may see from time to time though she is almost exclusively an indoor dog.

Why they chose this property
I love gardening/farming and wanted a house in a neighborhood with a lot of potential for developing community gardens and establishing urban agriculture. Morningside is a very active community with a great community organization and with recent neighborhood revitalization grant money, I see nothing but great things coming to the area. There are already several community gardens in the neighborhood and I am eager to get my own farm started! Once up-and-running, guests will be welcomed to pick fresh produce from the garden.
What makes this property unique
I have been an Airbnb guest for many years and i know what i like and don't like in these homes. I tried to make sure it didn't seem like a bunch of cheap furnishings were purchased just to fill the house. Furniture purchases were very thoughtful, many are high-end pieces that were originally purchased for my own use in this house, but I wanted to keep them in the guest space to make it seem more like an actual home than a short term rental. (also most are heavy and i didn't want to drag them upstairs!) Though the house is a Tudor style, my design preference is mid-century modern, so that theme is found throughout the house. All mattresses are memory foam and new (as of fall 2025) and I didn't want to overstuff the bedrooms with multiple beds just to allow more guests to stay. I guess i just never envisioned a time when I would want to share a bedroom with another couple.
