A vacation in Zandvoort is never complete without a visit to the race track that bears its name. Built in 1948, Circuit Park Zandvoort hosted the Dutch Grand Prix over 30 times. There are professional race events throughout the year, both on 2 and 4 wheels, for you to enjoy. And if that's not enough for you, then get behind the wheel of a Ferrari and lay down your own rubber (just make sure that you've got the right license first).
Keeping up the pace, on and off the beach
When you come to Zandvoort, you come for its wide sandy beaches. There are plenty of activities to keep you occupied, including kitesurfing, hang gliding, and sailing. If you'd rather keep your feet on the ground, then just chill at 1 of the dozens of beachside bars and restaurants. Off the beach, motorsport fans will love Circuit Park Zandvoort, which has regular race events, while families will go ape for Circus Zandvoort, a sprawling recreation center with fairground games, an arcade, and a cinema complex.
Sun, sea, and T-shirts fit a Zandvoort summer perfectly
Because of Zandvoort's coastal location, it's a little bit cooler than most of the country. However, Zandvoort does experience nice summers. In July and August, a T-shirt will do you nicely, as temperatures reach into the mid-70s. Even in early fall, you'll find shortsleeves are enough, as temperatures can still reach into the low 70s. While it's drier than most other parts of the country, Zandvoort does get the odd rain shower, particularly in winter. Given its popularity, Zandvoort gets pretty busy in summer, so September is always a good choice if you want to avoid the crowds.
Catching a glimpse of the lesser-spotted wisent
Nearby Zuid-Kennemerland National Park covers almost 4,000 acres. Its limestone dunes, wide beaches, and lush coastal forests are popular with hikers, cyclists, and swimmers alike. The inland dunes are covered with shrubs, which attract a variety of songbirds. The park's also home to many species of deer, squirrel, and hedgehog, as well rabbit and fox. You'll also spot some gnarly-looking Highland cattle, plus the rarely-spotted wisent. These European bison can be dangerous, and therefore graze in areas not publicly accessible. The wisents may be observed from either a viewing platform or a walking path (closed between March and September).
How to get to and around Zandvoort
The nearest airport is in Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS), located 10.7 mi (17.3 km) from the city center. If you can't find a flight that works for your travel itinerary, you can also fly into Rotterdam (RTM-Rotterdam The Hague), which is 29.5 mi (47.5 km) away.
