Romantic one bedroom house high in the canopy above the river: 2 bicycles & cano
Welcome to the Howler House. This is my dream house, and I am happy to say that the Howler House is now available for nightly, weekly and monthly rentals. This sweet little one bedroom house sits on stilts 12 feet up in the jungle canopy perched high on the edge of the Belize River. This is a truly amazing jungle vacation spot, with Howler families in the trees, crocodiles in the pond, giant Iguana mating in the yard, butterflies and songbirds in the air, this is a unique Belize jungle rental for your vacation. The house is 30 minutes from the international airport with high speed wireless internet, and a short walk or paddle to the Black Orchid Resort where you are welcome to enjoy their pool and wonderful restaurant.
Over the past three years, while building the Howler House, I have fantasized so much about this little house. To see my daydreams coming true is a constant feeling of joy — and now that the house is finished, I am ready to share my dream and welcome you to the Howler House — a unique luxury tree house vacation rental by owner.
Ideally the Howler House is a romantic spot for two, and my rates are based on this. If you have kids or want to bring along extra friends, they are welcome to sleep in the two hammocks on the screened in decks or in the living sitting area and the extra single bed on the screened in porch. The shower is hot and the breeze is constant - and there are five ceiling fans and a floor fan - so you will stay cool no matter what time of year you visit.
You can find the Howler House with a quick search, and you will see more photos and videos.
The Howler House is located in the little village of Burrell Boom, about 30 minutes from the international airport and centrally located. You will find the local people extraordinarily friendly and happy to meet you — if you take a moment to say hello. Remember, while people in the village may speak Creole, Spanish, and even Chinese and Mayan – they all, also speak English. So wander up to Miss Carol’s for a fish dinner and stop for cold beer or soda next door at Yellow Man’s traditional style pub with thatched roof. Maybe even play a game of dominoes with some of the locals.

Unique and Exciting Retreat
We had a great stay at the Howler House. Although a little tough to find, the house is directly on the Belize River and offered a beautiful setting for lounging on the balcony and searching for birds and monkeys in the trees. The house was well equipped with necessary amenities and entirely screened in to keep out mosquitos. It did seem that the house could use a few minor repairs, but our stay was comfortable nonetheless and the owner was easy to contact if necessary. Would definitely recommend the Howler House for future travelers!
Hi Ella, Thanks for the great review - hope your travels home were enjoyable - as can be. I am in the midst of major repairs on the deck and outlets and so much upkeep in the jungle! Happy travels!
Well maintained, peaceful, amazing setting! Perfect romantic getaway-from-it-all.
The Howler House was exactly what was advertised: not the Hilton, but a special place to reconnect with the love of your life in a natural setting. Because of the screen windows, sounds of jungle and slow moving water encapsulate you and allow you to leave behind worries of the outside world. The slower pace of life in Belize really let's you appreciate the moment.
The people of Belize have a friendliness about them that draws you in and makes you wonder how many of the rest of us lost that openness and sincerity.
The food- fish dishes on the coast and spicy chicken/pork dishes in the interior. But say you don't want to leave the house- No worries! The Howler House's full kitchen made it easy to prepare our stay-in meals. And if we wanted to share our musical tastes with the jungle, the free Wi-Fi connection allowed us to stream music whenever we felt like it.
Feel like seeing more of the country? Take a tour with the Black Orchid Resort just down the river.
There are honestly too many positive points to list. And the negatives have nothing to do with the house. That said, bring bug spray! The mosquitoes come out to feed at sun up and sun down. Thank goodness for the screened in dining area of the Howler House!
Sad to say that we didn't see Shakira the crocodile and the Howler monkeys only paid us a visit on the last day, but their antics made it worth the wait.
Having lunch with the property's owner on Caye Caulker was also a special treat.
Thank you Erika for allowing us to stay in your amazing creation, the Howler House.
Sincerely, Cory & Miriam Scott
Best spot on the river
Our stay was just what we had hoped for - a relaxing time with nature. We made use of the bikes to get a feel for the community and find Ms. Carol's, where we enjoyed her company and a good typical Belizean dinner. We met other interesting locals at the nearby general store. After that it was all canoeing for us. We didn't spot the croc in the pond, but we did see four in the river. We were lucky to have the howler monkey family come through twice, once crossing on the log right below our balcony. There were plenty of up-close iguanas as well. We spent one afternoon at the Black Orchid, where for the price of lunch, we had their pool all to ourselves. During another canoe trip we crossed paths with Dawson (the coconut man), and had a fun and educational chat with him in the middle of the river. Shana and Kenny offered many interesting trip opportunities and were most helpful & professional, but the nice weather and available canoe combined to make it too hard for us to leave our jungle spot...we were content to enjoy a real vacation staying right at the Howler House.
Heavenly Howler House
Unique incredible place to enjoy life in the slow lane. One will not find a friendlier town than Burrell Boom. Nature surrounds. If you love the sound and feel of the jungle this is your place. Bring mosquito repellent and if you are interested in touring around it may be best to rent a car because the price of going somewhere can get expensive
My wife and I spent several nights in the Howler House for our honeymoon and loved it. The scenery is idyllic, the wildlife is enchanting, and the location is perfect to visit almost anywhere you want.
Our review is limited by the short overnight stay but even so we were able to appreciate how special this cabin and its location are. You feel like you are roughing it in the middle of the jungle yet you are in a well appointed cabin not far from any needs. The set up amongst the trees by a river is beautiful and nature watching from the comfortable balcony hammocks is very relaxing. We hope to come back for a longer stay.
Hi Alicia and Peter - thanks so much for the great review, so happy you enjoyed my little dream home and hope so much we get to see you in Boom again - cheers, Erika
Burrell Boom is the sweetest little village on the Belize river and just 20 minutes from the international airport and central to every adventure or peaceful spot you might want to visit in Belize. What makes this little spot so sweet? In no particular order, I’d say the people of Burrell Boom, the river, the wildlife, the song birds, the location, the fire flies, the frogs -- and of course the Howler Monkeys The people are sweet because they are kind and shy and wonderful storytellers — who love their baseball, horses and music. And, they are also famous for their wine making skills. The river is sweet because when it is green it sparkles like an emerald and invites long lovely evening paddles. And when the river is flooding, it slips along in eddies and whirlpools a muddy rich brown color, and it is full of fish and lobster and Manatees too. The wildlife is awesome . Burrell Boom is a photographer’s dream and a bird-watchers paradise. The people of Burrell Boom live in wonderful harmony with the monkeys and crocodiles. They are proud to protect and happy to share their local knowledge of this amazing jungle wildlife. The location of Burrell Boom is as sweet as the people and wildlife. Boom is only 20 minutes from the international airport. And, you can travel from the front door of the Howler House to Caye Caulkers, by boat via Belize City, in 90 minutes — from the jungle to the reef, now that is pretty sweet. I can help you to arrange all your adventures – to anywhere to do anything you might dream-up. And, you’ll find that Burrell Boom is wonderfully central to Mayan ruins and Temples, amazing caves, Hopkins beach, Crooked Tree Bird Sanctuary, the Belize Zoo, the Howler Monkey Sanctuary, Baclar Eco park with horses and bicycle trails, Cave Tubbing and Ziplinning, the most remarkable diving sites and river or ocean fishing. All the things you can do without leaving the Howlerhouse deck: Photography, bird-watch, wait for the crocodile(s) to surface and perhaps sun themselves on the bank, get to know the howler monkeys (they like Reggie music), sit still and a Blue Morpho butterfly with an 8-inch wingspan will eventually float by. Play the stock market on-line on high-speed Wi-Fi. Lie under a gentle fan, swing in the hammock and read a good book. Write a poem, a song, a book or a blog. Watch the sun rise and the river float by, caste a line and catch a fish – yes, right from the deck when the river is flooding. Make origami. Paint a picture. Star gaze while fire flies light up the sky. Sip on rich local organic coffee in the morning, and exotic local wines in the afternoon. Watch for manatees. Skype your family, your boss, your best friend and show them the howlers in the trees. Stay cool and be prepared to wake up early because all the songbirds and parrots believe it is their daily duty to serenade the rising sun. All the things you can do if you decide to leave the deck: Paddle down the river, go fishing, ride a bicycle around the village, go to the local baseball games – join the locals on Friday evenings when people gather in the park after dark with music and drinks and snacks for sale. Go to the horse races on Sundays and holidays, Boom has the largest racetrack in the country, and we love our horses as much as our Reggie music. Have an ice-cold beer at Yellow Man’s local Pub along with a juicy burger or fried fish from Miss Caroline — while you are there, play a game of pool or dominoes with the villagers. Go horseback riding -– you could ride as far as the Howler retreat and learn more about these monkeys. Take a short drive to the Belize Zoo and visit the Jaguars, or join a tour to the Mayan Ruins. Hopkins Beach, just an hour down the road, has surf and white sand beaches rimmed with palm trees. Enjoy a delicious meal at the Black Orchid restaurant and then pass the evening in the Jungle Café listening to music and sipping local wines.
