About Kathy Fought
We have lived on the farm for over 24 years. We have 3 grown children & 3 grand daughters. That all still live near the area. I come from a large family of 10 siblings and over 40 nieces and nephews. And now over 30 great nieces & nephews (and that is just my side). I host most of the family gatherings. When my kids left the house I missed people coming and going. This has been a dream and a thought of mine for over 15 years. So with the help of my husband in 2006 we remodeled a 2 car garage. And converted it into our Bed and Breakfast we call the 'Bunkhouse'. Giving you all the amenities but keeping it rustic, cabin-like & simple. When we are not working around the property. We enjoy riding our horses, our pool, golfing, fishing, our cabins for campfires and camping. We also enjoy using the river on our property for canoeing and Kayaking. I used to think no would ever come all the way out here to stay. Then I would ride my horse in the trails in the woods and come back to the house. Looking over all the property then I would think. It's to pretty not to share. A life style almost forgotten. Time for us all to sit back & relax & enjoy life for awhile.
Why Kathy Fought chose Elkhart Township
When life hands you lemons you make Lemon-aid. My first husband died when we were 28. We were living outside Kendallville. In a new home in the woods. Jed & his wife had bought 6 acres, the home and portion of the lake in 1988. Just a few months later, she too passed away too at the age of 28. 6 years later in 1994 we married and I & my 7 year old son moved to Mirror Lake. Where we joined Jed (my husband) and his daughter of 10 and son of 7. We fell in love with the property. I too grow up on a family farm in the country and loved it. My husband was a dairy farmer. He milked cows on the home place just a few miles from this home. We have now purchased the entire farm of 175 acres, the family cemetery, the south half of the private lake and the 15 acre woods across the lake. For 17 years of our marriage he milked cows and was gone alot and worked very long hours. 4 years ago he sold the cows and now is only a grain farmer. And we have a lot more time to enjoy our property. What isn't there to LOVE?? Fresh air, green grass, green growing crops, blue sky, beautiful water, the Little Elkhart River, horse trails to ride or walk on. Peace, privacy, nature in all directions and FISH too. WHAT'S NOT TO LOVE??
What makes this Cabin unique
The main house dates to the early 1830's. There is a family cemetery with 49 graves on the farm, just south of the horse barn. We have an Osprey (bird) nest in our power line tower. There are only 5 nests in Noble Co. and 3 in LaGrange Co. AND WE HAVE ONE. This is their 5th year returning. It is peaceful and private. You are the only guests on the main property (there maybe campers in the woods at the 2 campsites.) A place to reconnect to each other or be on a vacation with another couple and NOT be surrounded by other people. Again did I say PRIVATE AND PEACEFUL!!

Four of us stayed here to attend the Notre Dame football game in South Bend. The cabin was exceptionally clean and inviting. It was warm and comfortable. Our level of privacy was excellent. Kathy was an excellent hostess.
We will be back!!!!!! Thank you Kathy!!
Kathy and her husband, Jed, were the perfect hosts. During our stay, we had free reign of their property, including the lake and woods, swimming pool, and a beautiful, cozy cabin. We were able to visit with the horses and cows too! There is an Osprey nest close by and we watched as they flew over the property and even dived into Mirror Lake to catch some fish. It was a very quite and peaceful setting, and so relaxing. Even our little dog found it very peaceful and it was a much needed vacation for her too.
Oh, and breakfast was awesome. You will not walk away hungry and Kathy served a variety of different foods. She shared a lot of the history about her home and Mirror Lake, and by the time our stay was over, we made a very good friend.
We will be going back to Mirror Lake for another relaxing stay and we are already looking forward to it.
Dan, Liz, (and Bella!)
Very peaceful. Loved seeing the lake from the window.
This is a very nice setting! Quiet and peaceful. Kathy and her husband were very nice. Would definitely stay here again. We did not do the breakfast option, her husband says she makes enough for 8. Sounds like you should come hungry. Bobbie Jo is a cutie!
Thank you for the review please come again!!
The perfect place to relax and enjoy the quiet. So peaceful and Kathy was wonderful
The place could have been cleaner. Pool was very dirty the first day but it was then cleaned. I loved the homey feeling and the breakfasts were wonderful. I will go again
The water was crystal clear in the pool. But yes we did have a wind and rain storm the day before you arrived. Which during a wind storm it does put a leaves in the pool. I worked at my beauty salon on Friday. So vacuuming the pool had to wait until Saturday. There is 175 acres here at Mirror lake bed-and-breakfast. Not everything can be done in one day. Thanks
Comfortable, quaint cottage with beautifully serene views
My husband and I stayed here for a weekend with our two dogs and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Although the weather was not great (rained all weekend), we were still able to relax on the property and enjoy the surrounding area. We explored parts of nearby Shipshewana, learned about the Amish/Mennonite culture, and ate some delicious Amish food! We loved seeing the horse-drawn buggies going down the road. The cabin was exactly what we were looking for. The accommodations were comfortable for us, and our dogs were allowed which was a huge bonus, as we don't like to travel without them. The cabin wasn't fancy, but it was nicely decorated and well-appointed. The small fridge and Keurig coffee maker were all we needed during our stay. I do wonder how comfortable it would be for a larger group, primarily because the walls don't go up to the ceiling so time spent in the bathroom isn't quite as private as one might hope.
The property was really beautiful and very peaceful. We enjoyed sitting inside and looking out over the lake as it rained. When the rain let up for a bit I explored the woods with the pups which they very much enjoyed. There are paths that are easily accessible. If I had one very minor complaint it would be that the TV is small and the DVD collection is even smaller. I know people don't come here to watch TV though, and if the weather hadn't been so crummy I wouldn't have even noticed, but there was little else to do when it was pouring rain.
We've rented cabins before, in and out of Indiana, and we usually look for something secluded, so we were initially concerned that we were right next to the main house. However, the windows in the cabin don't face the house so we quickly forgot it was there, and if our breakfasts hadn't been delivered to the cabin we wouldn't have even seen anyone the entire time. Kathy, the owner, cooked two breakfasts for us, both of which were delicious. She was happy to accommodate our food restrictions which I really appreciated.
We really loved our stay and are already talking about returning in the fall to enjoy the fall colors and cozy fireplace, hopefully with better weather!
Wish i could buy and retire here
Great hosts, wonderful simple property. Top notch fishing and area attractions. Amish country, sweet treats nearby. Just the right level of attention but keep your privacy. Nice decorating touches. There is a lot of thought and heart at Mirror Lake B+B. Sure we will be back
Second largest Amish community in the United States. Is located just minutes from our door. Drive through the country to watch Amish farmers work the fields. Or see the Amish children out playing with their pony. While the mother works in her gardens. Many Amish stores that you can stop and shop in. Visit the town of Shipshewana and their many mom and pop stores. The flea market at Shipshewana is every Tuesday and Wednesday. With the antique auction every Wednesday at the Auction barn in Shipshewana. Outside the small town of Emma is a great produce auction help every Tuesday and Thursday and some Fridays from April - November. We have over 30 different lakes around Mirror Lake that you can be to within 15 minutes. In the season we have over 10 mainly Amish greenhouses within 20 minutes as well. We are also blessed to have multiples parks like David Rogers, Delt Church Park, Dallas Lake park. You can spend a day on the river canoeing at Mongo, IN at the Trading Post. Or Chain-O-Lakes State park and enjoy a day on the beach or rent canoes there as well. For a walk in nature Gene Stratton-Porter is located in Rome City. The are 2 windmill museums in the US one is located 20 minutes from Mirror Lake. We are blessed in northern Indiana with many small town fairs. Want to see more animals and a county fair might just be your cup of tea. Or ask Kathy about her 'Farm to Farm ' package she has. Horse riding is available at one of the farms. The Fort Wayne Zoo is about 1 hr away. But if your looking for something closer and smaller we have Black Pine Animal Sanctuary or an Amish place called Maple Lane Animal Park. Fashion Farm is located in Ligonier and is in full swing during the Pumpkin Fantasyland October 1-31. Many mom and pop restaurants are only a short drive away. Again we are located in the peaceful, country setting. With green and nature all around. Come see it's a MUST!!!

VRBO Things To Do
The closest town to Mirror Lake is Rome City. Looking for things to do visit the historical site Gene Stratton-Porter. Tour her cabin and walk though her flower gardens and many trails in the wooded property. Then visit the small museum based on Gene Stratton-Porter's life. gene's home is found on the shores of Sylvan Lake.
Other water activities are take a day and canoe the Pigeon river in Mongo. Mango is found about 25 minutes from Mirror Lake. You can rent canoes, single or double kayaks. You can pick trips as little as 4 miles or up to 13 miles. The Trading Post works very hard at keeping the river clear. To make your trip easy canoeing.
At Mirror Lake you can rent our mini pontoon, fishing boat, canoe or double kayak, to use at our lake.Or bring your own boat and fish or ski over 30 lakes within minutes from Mirror Lake B&B. Sylvan Lake is one of the largest lakes in the area and is just a few miles down the road from Mirror Lake B&B.
Maple Lane Wildlife Park is located just west of Topeka minutes from Mirror Lake B&B. It is owned and operated by an Amish family. You can pay a little extra and take a camel or pony ride. You get a wagon ride and can feed the goats as you go. See their many lions, tigers and bears and more. Enjoy the playground and then have your packed lunch in the same area.
Shipshewana, where do we begin? You can spend hours or days in this little Amish town. First is the Flea Market on Tuesday and Wednesdays. Pay a small fee to park and shop over 1,200 booths. From Amish made products, sweatshirts, crafts, gifts and jewelry to things made in China. Rows of fresh produce, bushes and plants as well. Opens mid May and goes till the end of October. Booths do start to dwindle late September. There is multiples food booths on the grounds. Or you can go to the Auction Restaurant ( heated and air condition)
Every Wednesday in the large pole barn (on the flea Market property) there is an auction. Starts at 9:00 ends around 1:30. There are about 8 auctioneers all auctioning in different areas. There could be anything there. If you like auctions this is a MUST!
I have many guests that enjoy the Buggy Lane (found in the alley) not the fancy horse and wagon at the Blue Gate. A real Amish buggy or wagon takes you to the Mennonite Dairy farm. Here you watch them milk cows by hand. You can milk too if you like. Help feed pig, pet the kittens and take care of all the other farm animals. You can enjoy a real Amish dinner at a nieces home nearby. Then they delivery you back to town in a van. Dinner requires a week reservation.
Uptown has small town CHARM. Many store that used to be homes line the street for hours of shopping. You can spend hours in the Old Davis Hotel now called the Davis Mercantile. Lollies is a quilter's dream with bolts and bolts of material and patterns for your quilting projects. Try a Jo - Jo pretzel.
