ROOF FLOOR: Wood-burning stove and room for socializing
A high-ceilinged room under the roof, with sweeping views of the countryside and light streaming in from all directions. For anyone who likes to start the day on the balcony with the sun on their face—and perhaps end it in the bathtub beneath the warm sloping roof.
The apartment is located in the attic of the caretaker’s house. It used to be a storage area—today it’s the most open living space in the commander’s residence. The kitchen, dining table, sofa, and wood-burning stove stand freely beneath the converted roof trusses, and a glass door leads out to the green balcony—with a view of the church, the courtyard, and the Romanesque house. Flanking the living area are four smaller rooms: three bedrooms and a study. No kitsch, no knickknacks—sloping ceilings, wooden beams, a bed, dormers that let in light, a place to retreat to. *A fold-out daybed offers space for two additional people. Two bathrooms: one small, built of wood, with a shower and a skylight; the other larger, with a freestanding bathtub, accessible from the central section of the apartment. Ceiling and floor heating ensure comfortable temperatures; in the summer, the apartment is cooled via the same system. As is the case throughout the Komturei: wood-fiber insulation, clay plaster, clay paint—breathable materials you can literally feel.
If you’re in the mood for fresh local fruits and vegetables, you can order an organic box from Grünland in Salzwedel. Deliveries arrive on Fridays—and can even be arranged before your arrival. Hidden in the cupboard under the stairs is a small shop stocked with fine foods and beverages—such as apple juice from Mühlenberg, bread mix, honey, pasta, pesto, and more. And if you feel like browsing, you might find the perfect book for a quiet hour on the shared bookshelf.
The sauna in the old vaulted cellar of the caretaker’s house is open to all guests.
