Perfect for Couples Or Families Up To 4 In Lovely Two Story Log Home .

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,200 sq ft
Property type cabin

About the property

Sleeps 4. 2 Bedrooms. 1 Bathroom.

Located at our Otter Creek cattle ranch, where we have lived for six generations, the cabin on Otter Creek has a living room with lovely views of the Crazy Mountains, comfortable stuffed hickory chairs and sofa, wagon wheel lights. The dining area has a hickory table which seats 4 easily by a picture window or there is a back deck for eating where you can listen to Otter Creek and watch one of our glorious sunsets as you watch deer, fox and birds enjoy the evening. The kitchen has a full refrigerator with freezer section, microwave, toaster, sink, dishes, utensils and cups and glasses. The propane stove has 4 burners and an oven. There are cooking utensils, pans, etc., in the cupboards as well as flour, sugar, cereal, s & p and some dry goods. There is also a wood burning stove in the living room for that unbeatable wood heat.

Through a hallway is the bathroom with tub, shower, sink, toilet and another mountain view. The bedroom downstairs has a queen bed, cozy comforter, bedside lights for reading and an overhead light, dresser and closet. This window looks out on the lawn and our own log home which Bill also built.

Up the stairs is a half loft with twin beds, oak dressers, chairs and a spotting scope for wildlife viewing. There is a ceiling fan in the living room which circulates the propane heat. All the rooms are well-appointed with Indian rugs, pictures, plenty of lights and books.

There are fish in Otter Creek that, although they aren't big, make excellent eating. Miles of hiking from the cabin to the mountains are home to sandhill cranes, Canada geese, hawks, eagles, and many song birds, coyotes, an occasional badger, deer, antelope, and elk on our 10,000 acres. There is swimming available in the reservoir; the creek is shallow except at run-off so is great for kids to play.

The photographic opportunities are limitless especially since this rental carries with it privileges to hike and fish in Sweet Grass Canyon at the Sweet Grass Ranch where we have taken guests for 50 years. Riding (mid-June to mid-September only) for several hours may also be available with prior arrangements and at an extra cost during your stay.

The Otter Creek Cabin provides the perfect opportunity to reconnect with family and enjoy the simple pleasures as there is no television. Internet is available. Cell phone service is available at the mailbox (1 mile) or on the hill behind the barn.

In the winter there is sledding on the hills, cross country skiing(call ahead to see if the wind has blown) and skating on the pond and the reservoir.

We do ask that you do not smoke in the cabin.

Well maintained, great location.

We loved our time at Otter Creek Cabin. The hospitality was wonderful, warm, and genuine. We spent 9 glorious days of serenity, silence, and solitude. We watched the deer, kingfishers, kingbirds, and listened to the meadowlarks. We walked the back roads and gloried in the big sky. The cabin itself is wonderful, full of western touches and a back porch that faces West. The sunsets over the Crazy Mountains were a prelude to a night's sleep without traffic noises or stress. We have already talked to the owners to schedule a longer stay next year.

Perfect Montana ranch cabin

  • 5 of 5

We loved our one week stay in this perfect cabin, and we are already thinking about when we can get back. It is just remote enough for us—about 9 miles off the highway, or only 6 if you take the shortcut we discovered. It is beautifully built, with everything we needed—a full kitchen, more than enough space for two of us (the kids would have liked being upstairs if we'd had them with us). There is a gorgeous view of the Crazy Mountains, Otter Creek runs past the back porch, and real ranching is going on all around (we loved watching the cow and calf pairs just beyond the fence). Our main excursions were for hiking—around the ranch, up the Boulder River, up to Twin Lakes. We liked doing basic errands in Big Timber, and one day we went to the big city (Bozeman), but the main pleasure was coming back every day to the kind of place we'd build for ourselves in the perfect location.

Big Timber Cabin

  • 3 of 5

Beautiful cabin, a little far from the north entrance of Yellowstone. Lots of books to read, no tv or phone reception at the cabin but was told we could get it up the road, Had to travel 8 milles from the main road to cabin on a dirt road. There is a small fenced in backyard, but no lake like the picture shows. The lake is at Sweet Grass ranch about 40 minutes driving from the cabin. If you are looking for solitude then this is your place!

Owner's Response: I always let guests know how far we are from Yellowstone before they book, as well as answering any other questions they have about the cabin. From the 14 mile marker, there is a good gravel road for 8 miles. If it has been raining, I let guests know to come a different way so they will only have 3 miles on gravel. There is no fenced yard at the cabin, but an area you can leash your dog if you wish. We have a large reservoir south of the cabin, which is marked on a map in the cabin. It is about 1/4 mile walk to it.

Perfect Montana Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

A simple review cannot summarize the perfection of this place. All of the little details make this cozy cabin a retreat to remember. To top it all off, we made sure to book some time at the ranch for a horseback ride and had no idea how amazing our experience would be. Everyone welcomed us to the ranch like we were old friends and we had one of the best afternoons of our vacation. Thank you Bill and Shelly for providing an experience we will never forget!

Overpriced for the level of customer service received!

Owner's Response: It is unfortunate that this couple came to a fully furnished cabin with hiking and fishing expecting "customer service". We were extremely busy at our guest ranch and did not have the time to take them around nor could we offer them riding. We do warn cabin guests that riding is not guaranteed. We are sorry they were unhappy.
