About Hilary Benson

The Kelly family is the second family to live in the main house, which was built in 1876 by Maj. Samuel Walker for his family.

Hilary Benson purchased this apartment in 1971

Why Hilary Benson chose Eastern Market

One of the premier properties on Capitol Hill, the carriage house, the stable and the east side of this Victorian house were completed in 1876. By 1886, Maj. Samuel Walker had more money and ten children so he added the west side of the house, the third floor and the porches in the style of Charles Eastlake, the English architect who simplified Victorian architecture and flattened its rounded gingerbread. All of the first floor ceilings—except the hall—are tin and so is a bedroom ceiling on the second floor.

What makes this apartment unique

One of the great pleasures of the house is that it remains much as it was when first built. Modernizing was done slowly, with care and caution. On the chance that electricity was just a fad, Major Walker only electrified every other arm of the chandeliers in the living room and the study and left the others as gas lights. The gaslights still work--and so does the electricity.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Fantastic location. We used bike share, the metro, and Lyft to get around the city, or just walked!, and it was great for all those. We spent very little time on logistal travel and most our time on seeing the sights thanks to this great apartment. Communication and helpfulness were superb!

Great location in Stanton Park neighborhood. Walk to Union Station & ride everywhere.

  • 5 of 5

This is a comfy garden apartment in a great neighborhood, close to Union Station & the Capitol Building. When we arrived on Sunday evening the neighborhood was quiet. Monday a.m. the Stanton Park neighborhood came alive with runners, walkers, kids going to school, kids in strollers, commuters, dog walkers, bicycles, etc. The park itself is only a block away from the apartment and comes complete with statue, playground and benches surrounding the statue. At night all is quiet again in the neighborhood. We parked the car for the week and walked or rode the Circulator to see the sights. The apartment is fully fitted out for a comfortable stay. We were there to celebrate our 60th anniversary and it fitted our needs perfectly. Union Station is only a 1/2 mile walk from the apartment. From there you can take the Metro or Circulator anywhere in the city. There are several good restaurants within easy walking distance.

Great location and we'd stay there again.

Darling place with the old charm of DC!

  • 5 of 5

We loved it here! The place is so cute and has a true historic DC feel. Very cute decor, clean, safe, and relaxing.. it was the perfect retreat at the end of the day! The location is in perfect proximity to all the sites - you can even see the Capitol from the house! Safe neighborhood and beautiful surroundings!

We'd return and recommend this place to anyone.

Place could use a couple repairs, but they didn't hurt our experience at all. The owners were very helpful and the instructions they left were very clear. The process of checking in and out is quite easy and painless! We are very happy!

It was perfect for a family who was out and about in the city. Great proximity to the mall

  • 4 of 5

Property was clean and comfortable. Only issue was bathroom which is located in the only bedroom. It was uncomfortable for couple who were sleeping in the living room especially because the bathroom door needed to be slammed in order to close. Also door in bathroom was not solid. Had a large clouded glass panel. This situation also reduced privacy.

Comfy, convenient flat!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a long weekend and were thrilled with our accommodations. We were able to walk everywhere easily, felt safe, and enjoyed many of the quaint restaurants that dot the neighborhood. The flat was well appointed and quiet. I highly recommend this rental as a landing point.

clean, comfortable, and convenient!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 (including boys ages 9, 10, 11) enjoyed everything about this place. Spent a week over kids' fall break seeing the usual DC sights. Comfortably slept all five of us in separate beds (in addition to bedroom, we used the couch, trundle and roll away). Kitchen and eating area are very spacious, and with a little furniture re-arranging, all of us were able to sit and chill in front of TV after dinner. You control your own A/C unit, which is nice. Linens looked brand new, and this place had everything we needed to prepare whatever we wanted. God bless whoever left the bottle of white wine in the fridge (we sure appreciated it, and made sure to reciprocate when we departed). Both Whole Foods and Trader Joe's are within easy walking distance (Trader Joe's is just above Eastern Market Metro stop), so we were able to do B-fast and dinner every day at "home," which is our preference, but there were numerous restaurants within walking distance. Union Station (red line) and Capital South (blue/orange line) Metro stops also really close (< half mile away). Realize that Uber to certain places on Mall may be cheaper option for family of 4 or 5, but we preferred the subway experience. Although some other reviewers may have been disappointed with upstairs noises, and we certainly heard footsteps several times, they didn't bother us at all. We only had two VERY minor issues: 1) first key didn't open side access gate (but it was resolved immediately by onsite owner) and 2) the mini blind in the kitchen did not close all the way (falls into the "whatever" category for us). All in all, we had a great experience, and trust you will too.

The C and O canal, parallel to the Potomac, is the center of the Appalachian Trail and beloved by hikers. Others go to the capitol on summer nights to listen to one of the military bands; others sail, fish or ride one of the sightseeing boats on the Potomac and go to Chestertown, Md., to shoot geese in the fall. On the Hill, however, we go biking (you can rent them everywhere); we swim at the Natatorium, our indoor pool; we go to the Hill Center on Pennsylvania Ave., S. E., which has activities every day; we pick up our gifts at the capitol or one of the museums, and we walk much more than we drive.
