1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps up to 4
Our ground floor gallery apartment is nestled in Yellowwood State Forest on an organic farm, b/w Nashville & Bloomington. This spacious 1BR has a private entrance & is ideal for 2 guests but can sleep up to 4 with pull-out couch in LR.
This apartment, on the ground floor of our home, is located halfway between the vibrant university town of Bloomington, Indiana and the quaint artists' village of Nashville, Indiana. The cozy, welcoming apartment is decorated with paintings from the host, Mark Blaney, on-site artist. The apartment features Mark's beautiful work, with paintings in every room.
Our home sits on a small organic farm, The Blue Farm, which raises berries, herbs, vegetables, flowers, and 140 hens, laying eggs fresh, every day. Guests will have farm fresh eggs in the fridge and other farm-to-table food depending on what's available in the garden that day. Guests can cook their own meals in the full size kitchen and dine at the kitchen table or out on the front porch.
The apartment also has a full bath, laundry facility, large bedroom and living room with a couch that has a hide-abed. Also in the living room is a TV with a DVD player and a selection of movies to choose from. The bedroom has a full size, brand new, memory foam mattress. If you need the pull out sofa bed, we have a foam topper to add to the mattress to make it more comfortable.
The front porch area has a table for dining and a porch swing to enjoy while you take in the sound of clucking hens and enjoy the sunset over the woods.
You will have your own private space. If outside, you will probably hear the clucking hens and perhaps occasional barking of our four dogs (outside, but in the back of our home). The apartment itself is pet free and is non-smoking.
At the end of our dead-end country road is access to hiking trails in beautiful Yellowwood Forest. Having lived in the area since 1985, we will happily give you information on sites and attractions and how to find your way around. We are about 20 minutes from downtown Bloomington and the IU campus and about the 25 min. from the downtown Nashville. We are 10 minutes from Yellowood Lake which has beautiful hiking trails, a serene lake and excellent bird watching. Our home is 1 1/2 miles down a winding country road. The craftsman style home sits in between two forests-- Yellowood State Forest is our backyard and Morgan Monroe State Forest is our front yard.
**Being in the middle of the woods, the occasional mouse or bug can make its way into the house. We make all efforts to keep this to an absolute minimum and in a way that protects us and the environment from toxins. Please try to keep an open mind, as an occasional meeting of Mother Nature's critters is a small price to pay for her absolute beauty in this pristine location!

About Julie James
I (Julie) am an enthusiastic lover of the fullness of life! I am a Career Advisor and an instructor for SPEA’s Career Development Office. I find joy in working with individuals to support them in creating a career and a life that they love. I have a Master of Science in Applied Health Science and taught courses in Human Development and Family Studies in the School of Public Health for the ten years. In 2011 I received the Students Choice Award for Outstanding Instructors at Indiana University. In 1994, I co-founded the non-profit organization, Bloomington Area Birth Services. A former childbirth educator, birth and post-partum doula, and birth photographer, I also designed and taught the course “Birth in a Family Context” which was a popular course on campus for the past decade. My family and I live in Yellowwood State Forest on our organic farm, The Blue Farm, where we raise chickens for eggs and grow berries and vegetables. I love laughing, creating a vision for the future, writing, spending time with my partner and three children, and being in the natural world—hiking, gardening, canoeing, swimming, traveling to new places. Perhaps above all, I absolutely love sharing my love of the outdoors with others. Mark is an award winning artist. Here's a statement he wrote: Painting and sculpting help with seeing closely into the world around me. I simply get pleasure from the many forms lit by the sun. The movement and interactions among people, plants, animals and weather are reason enough to make symbols. Working in two and three dimensional media helps me hold onto thoughts for awhile and to share them. The variations and descriptive qualities of line and color hold my interest and every new painting is a chance at working and playing in form and color. The trading of time between sculpture and painting strengthens both efforts. Mark is a long-time farmer and out door enthusiast and truly a jack-of-all-trades.

Why Julie James chose Benton
I love this home because it's in a forest and yet has enough sun-lit land to fulfill my dream of having a blueberry farm, a large garden, and many hens. I love the peace and serenity of the woods and the nearness of hiking in them. We have some of the most beautiful trails in the area, at the end of our road. I grew up playing in the woods and creeks of southern Indiana and it's a joy to be back in the woods again, able to see my old friends, the turtles and toads as well as foxes, coyotes, owls, wild turkeys, blue heron, and more. I have a deep love of nature and it feels right to be near the forest and also to be growing food organically, sustainably and with permaculture principles in mind. It took me a full year at the Blue Farm to not feel like I was in a vacation home instead of my own home.
What makes this Apartment unique
There is the peace and serenity of the woods. We are steps away from the quiet and solitude of nature and forest's wisdom. On the other hand, the Blue Farm has some lively company in our 130 hens and 4 dogs. Looking for time amongst a wide variety of trees, plants, wild birds, and wildlife? Visitors to the Blue Farm will find this.

Needed More Time
Julie, whom we did not personally meet, and Mark were wonderful, personable hosts; very attentive and in communication with us prior to and during our stay. Our son was competing at the B1G Ten Outdoor Men's Track Championships, in Bloomington, Indiana on Friday and our daughter was graduating on Saturday from the University of Illinois, Champaign. As you can imagine our stay was a smidge rushed. We were a bit too early in the season to enjoy any fresh grown produce. Although, our fridge was full of eggs, our counter top held honey and local baked bread. The hoop houses, chickens, ducks, lone turkey and several dogs, all added to the farm feel. The apartment was very comfortable, with all needed to have a relaxed stay. My only wish was to have had a tad more time to dig in to obtain a bit more information regarding the establishment and inner working of the Blue Farm. Our best wishes and hope to see Julie and Mark again soon. Forge On ~ Veronica
Cozy & Friendly!
I had to travel for work and wanted to get away from the traditional hotel setting. Julie and Mark's place was perfect. The natural setting was wonderful. The food provided was everything you need for breakfast, snack, and then some (the eggs, oh my gosh...so good!) I had some car trouble and Julie and Mark went out of their way to help. My only regret is not reserving more time for hiking. I only had time to reach the very beginning of the trails, but they looked divine. For my future Bloomington travels, I know where I will be staying!
Right back atcha, Lisa! We loved hosting you. I wish the weather had been a bit kinder for your hiking and travels, but you two were such troopers! We super hope we cross paths with you again!! Thank you for your flexibility and outlook on life!
The Blue Farm was like coming home
Staying at the Blue Farm stirred warm memories for me of my old country home in southern Illinois where I raised my kids. The chickens and fresh eggs, wood-burning stove and solitude of the country was refreshing and restorative for me. I appreciate how Julie & Mark share their little piece of heaven on earth with others who need a break from the business and noise of life.
Starry nights and fresh eggs...a real country getaway
We had a lovely two day stay at Julie's. The place was super clean and warm and filled with delicious food, compliments of Julie: fresh eggs from her hens, French yogurt, fruit, fresh bread, juices. She really went all out!
We would definitely go back.
Kind, super courteous hosts, comfortable place to get away from it all
Was a comfortable week and this location could not have been more spot on. Easy to get where we needed to be, and comfortable when we were ‘home’ for the day. Got to explore brown county and visit with the horse next door.
Will be back!!
VRBO at Blue Farm was a charm!
Lovely VRBO in Bloomington Indiana, the location is absolutely perfect, for getting out of the City. Also great value for money.
The apartment was set up perfect for our Thanksgiving dinner! The art work done by Mark throughout was a beautiful add!
Julie and Mark were very welcoming and friendly, the breakfast items were excellent! They included fruit, eggs, bread from the bakery, jams, and Starbucks coffee with a French Press!!
When we return to Bloomington we'll certainly consider staying at Blue Farm again.
