Palazzetto da Schio offers four apartments, with one or two bedrooms, which look out over the canal in front of the house or over the garden and rooftops at the back. This listing refers to the large apartments.
The bedrooms have queen size beds or twin beds. Each apartment is furnished with family antiques - the real thing! - but equipment is modern and efficient. Each bedroom has its own bathroom. The kitchens are well equipped for people who like to shop at the market and do their own cooking.
All the rooms are rather large, by Venetian standards, and the living-rooms are comfortable for being together.
The location of the house, near the Guggenheim collection and the Basilica della Salute is close to the very heart of Venice but it is away from the noisy crowds of the daily tourists.
The two bed rooms apartments are # 3 and 4. They are similar and have the same rates but are on different floors.
Apartment 3 - Top floor over the canal (Sleeps 4 - Max 6)
This apartment faces east so it gets the morning light.
The sitting room and bedrooms look out over the canal. It has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living-room and kitchen.
The rooms are large and can therefore accommodate a family of 5 or 6 persons quite comfortably. The atmosphere is “rustic Venice”, with old beams and Venetian floors, while the furniture is mostly XVIIIth century, with some later, and some earlier pieces.
There is an electric hoist that takes up the luggage to the top floor.
Apartment 4 - Mezzanine floor over the canal (Sleeps 4 - Max. 5)
This apartment faces east and gets all the morning sun. The rooms look out over the canal.
It has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, living-room and kitchen. It is a favorite with guests who do not like climbing stairs.
The atmosphere is that of elegant XVIIIth century Venice: it has some of the best family furniture and paintings of that period.
Each apartment is equipped with satellite TV and DVD player.
Each apartment has independent heating and air-conditioning.
All the kitchens are equipped with 4 gas fires, electric oven, microwave oven, toaster, mixer, juicer and complete set of kitchenware and tableware.
There are also a fridge and freezer, a washer/dryer machine.
A baby bed and equipment for toddlers is available on request but, because antique furniture is delicate children should be well supervised for their own safety and also for the safety of the furnishings.
I grew up in this house. We lived in it as one home. I left Venice to work in Milan and came back in 1986. With the help of my husband, we restored it and divided it into five apartments, one for ourselves and the others to be offered to guests who love Venice. Since then, i have met many people from all over the world and I realize that i love my job because these guests are so interesting and - most of them - are so nice: they give me glimpses into places, traditions, habits that make my world larger and closer at the same time.
Elisabetta Steiner purchased this house in 1700
This house has been in my family for many generations and i have lived in it most of my life so it is understandable that i love it. You might say it has got under my skin. Trying to be objective, though, i must say i am lucky in owning a house which has a wide canal on the front and a garden on the back. This gives it a lot of light, and nice views, front and back, specially compared to many Venetian houses which are located in the Calli and never have natural light. The location is also excellent, close to st.Mark's square but on the other side of the grand canal which makes it very quiet. In fact this area is one of the most requested by people who are looking for a house to buy.
The most important benefit for my guests is that i live in this same house and am on call practically all the time for help and advice. This is not the case for the great majority of rentals in Venice.
I would never change this house with any other in Venice because of the things i mentioned above and because of the unique mix of Venetian styles that make it different from other places:
The top floor is 'rustic Venice' with exposed rough beams still bearing the marks of the 16th century woodcutters, but the main and the mezzanine floors have an elegant 18th century atmosphere with decorated ceilings and soft colors. On the ground floor I have restored the terrazzo which is so delicate but so much nicer than the tiling that many Venetians adopt for merely practical reasons.
My husband and 2 teenage boys started our European vacation in Venice. We chose this property because the space looked perfect for us all. We are so glad we did! We stayed 4 nights and had a perfect space to call home while in Venice. Anna and Elizabetta were gracious hosts. The location was great and was within walking distance to restaurants, markets, several vaporetto stops, coffee shops and most importantly, gelato! Our boys walked daily to Nico's per Anna's suggestion. My hubby and I enjoyed wine and coffee in the lovely garden each day. The view out the windows were breathtaking. We were given a map of the area with suggestions for places to eat, shop, tour, etc that Anna had made personally. We kept this in our pocket throughout our entire stay. Thank you for always being available to us to answer our questions! The antiques and history of the building are sure to never be forgotten! We were a bit nervous about the meter readings at the end for water and electricity, but we all showered daily, did laundry and kept the air conditioners on all day and night. Our charge at the end was only 42Euro. We will surely return to Palazetto Da Schio should we return to Venice. I will recommend this lovely apartment to any friends/family who will be visiting Venice. Thank you for your kindness, hospitality and sharing your beautiful property with us!
Thank you so much for making our stay in Venice so memorable at the apartment Palazetto Da Schio. The apartment was just as beautiful as described and very roomy. It provided us with a deep feeling of history and belonging. I loved the location and especially liked opening the windows to hear birdsong and church bells. You created for us a warmth and welcoming that stayed with us for our entire Italian vacation. Thank you for always being available to help us and allow us the opportunity to meet your mother and understand more of the beauty and history of Venice. I cannot thank you enough for your kindness and attention to every detail to make our vacation truly a dream come true.
My husband, his sister and I (all retirees) stayed a week at the Palazzetto. We appreciated having so much space (nearly unheard of in Venice) and two separate suites. We have rented a total of five apartments in Venice and this was by far the best one -- for location (quiet), space, light, convenience, well-equipped kitchen, decor, comfort and privacy.
We needed those boots that the Contessa provided because we experience up-front and personal the aqua alta that I have heard so much about. In early March, we had a week of chilly, bleak and damp weather, but the apartment was cozy and comforting. Had there been better weather, we would have loved to sit out in the garden.
I cooked most of our meals and found the kitchen up to the task. We are just midway through an almost two month trip so by now I've had a few kitchens and I can say that this kitchen, though a tad outdated, had everything that I needed. Of particular note is the combo washer/dryer which performed perfectly, giving us well dried clothes. I have found washers in Europe to be particularly vexing because they work differently than American models. There was a user's manual in many languages to help. We had plenty of hot water -- another problem in a lot of European rentals.
Now, let me just say a word about the Contessa. She is a character in all the right ways. She is charming, helpful, informative, friendly and speaks with a British accent. I had a hard time remembering that she is actually Italian because she seemed so English. Before you rent, look up her family. It's a long line of important personages from Medieval times. She made our stay there so comfortable that we felt like guests in her home instead of renters.
My husband, our four children and I stayed for a week in February at apartment 3 at Palazetto Da Schio. And what a truly great experience it offered! The rooms were very spacious and light and did fully match the pictures we had been shown beforehand - we were not disappointed the slightest. My husband and I shared a separate bedroom with an attached bathroom while our three youngest children slept in another bedroom with their own toilet and shower. My oldest daughter had the opportunity to sleep on a sofabed in the drawing room which she enjoyed a lot! The kitchen is small but fully equipped with everything you could possibly be in need of. This and the fact that there is a nice supermarket (Conad) within a walking distance from the apartment; is why we often ate our dinner at home after a long day being tourists in the city. Altogether, the apartment is endowed with anything from waders to useful maps of Venice.
At last, I should add that Contessa da Schio is an incredibly helpful host who responded quickly if we were in need of anything and even helped us order a water taxi for the airport on our way home. Quick tip ~ this is an amazing experience and if the budget can afford it, you should splurge on this luxury at least one way.
Me and my family wish to thank Contessa da Schio for the wonderful stay in Venice and we hope that others who are flirting with the idea of a trip to this amazing city, will be inspired to do so at this palazetto. // and if the weather allows it, do try the charming patio!
This apartment offers two things often difficult to find in Venice: space and light. Add to this the charm and consideration of Contessa da Schio and the history of her palazzetto, including its furnishings, and you have the makings of a memorable stay in Venice. We were two couples, staying for about a week, and appreciated the large bedrooms and separate bathrooms, with a comfortable, spacious living/dining room for meals and gatherings. The kitchen is small but functional; we cooked several meals there. The palazzetto is well-located close to both the Salute and Zattere vaporetto stops and steps to the stop for the #6 boat at Spirito Santo, although that boat runs less often than the ones leaving from the other stops. The apartment was very clean and well-equipped; the rubber boots provided came in very handy for us. The major advantage of this apartment is that it is unique to Venice - apartments are everywhere, but you can stay in a palazzetto on a canal in only one city. Contessa da Schio's knowledge of the city and personal connection to it provide a welcome perspective on Venice.
I am so happy we were able to start our two week trip to Italy in this fabulous apartment. This area of Venice is the best - quiet but we were able to walk to all the sights we had planned to see. A short walk to shops and wonderfull restaurants. But the best part of all is the warm hospitality of the owner. She was so welcoming and spent time explaining all about the apartment and the area. Learning the history of the home and her family made it even more special to be able to stay there. It is perfect and I highly recommend it. I hope I am fortunate enough to be able to come back to Venice some day - and this is where I will stay!
Palazzetto da Schio overlooks Rio della Fornace, between the Guggenheim Collection and the Basilica della Salute, only one vaporetto stop away from St. Mark's Square. It is therefore very quiet, away from the noisy crowds, and, at the same time, close to the heart of Venice.
