About Alan and Heidi King

Just relocated to Southern California to spend time with our grandchildren, while continuing to work full time. Held professional careers in northern VA and to escape the business, we head to relax in the Caribbean. Heidi served as a Peace Corps Volunteer shortly after college and then later, Alan and Heidi 'tied the knot' on the veranda of the Golden Lemon Inn. St Kitts holds a special place in the hearts of the King family!

Alan and Heidi King purchased this villa in 2008

Why Alan and Heidi King chose St. Kitts (St. Christopher)

The Kings hold sacred the West Indian people, lifestyle, and cuisine. When staying at The King's Retreat you will be recharged and refreshed while enjoying this ocean front property! At the same time, if you wish, you have the opportunity to experience the authenticity of island living and become immersed in the village life.

Whether you want a intimate get away, a fun filled family vacation, or prefer to be a cast away while you read novels or write your memoirs, or go limin' on every scenic beach throughout the island, we want you to make our villa your villa. We promise it will be an experience you will never forget!

Good House

  • 3 of 5

My family of three stayed in Kings Retreat Easter Week. We found the house comfortable and it looked exactly like the pictures, if anything the house was better than the pictures. The house showed its age but was comfortable and well stocked with everything a family needs to have a great vacation, including beach towels (which I wish we had known in advance). The bedrooms were spacious and both had great views. The living room was very comfortable, we especially enjoyed being able to access the pool directly from the living room. The view from the deck was spectacular, I’m surprised there aren’t more pictures of the deck on the website. The house is an easy 2 minute walk to Dieppe Bay beach which is where Arthur’s is located. We had lunch there on several occasions and found the food and service to be excellent. The only bad thing about Arthur’s is that it’s not open for dinner. We also got take-out from Coopers (about a 2 minute drive) that was excellent, their building is little more than a shack but don’t let that deter you, it is very good.

What the description of Kings Retreat doesn’t tell you is that it’s located in what I would call a third world village. While we found some people there to be VERY friendly like Joy the caretaker, Chef the caretaker of the other unit or Louis the local artist, others in the village seemed to view us with indifference. Dieppe Bay is remote which is what we expected, but we didn’t expect the roads to be so narrow through the many villages along the way to Dieppe Bay. It is a 30 minute trip back to the airport, 45 minutes to Frigate Bay/Shipwreck Bar, and nearly an hour to Cockleshell Beach. The novelty of seeing herds of goats along the road quickly wore off. We did see monkeys very close to the house which made my daughter very happy. The remoteness would be great had the village not been SO destitute and the roads to town much better. When we read the description of the remoteness I pictured more Road to Hana and while it was a little like that the poverty was hard to get past.

Many people rated this property five stars. While it checks all the boxes for a fun vacation I don’t think it’s a five star property. The house didn’t lack for amenities but most of the amenities were well past their prime. The beach is not your stereotypical golden sand beach and the village far from 5 star. We found it hard to assimilate to such an impoverished village.

A fabulous escape!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at The Kings Retreat from March 11 to 18, 2017. It is a hidden gem in St. Kitts. The villa has everything you need for a fabulous and relaxing vacation. It's clean, beautifully decorated and takes full advantage of being right on the water. It's a different experience than staying at a resort and we found it to be wonderful. The sound of waves, the visiting birds and the warm and friendly people made our experience really special. The water was pretty rough while we were there so we were not able to snorkel on the reef, but there are many other protected places on the island and we had fun exploring. The hosts were generous and very helpful. We had a very positive experience and would recommend staying here.

Fantastic Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the King's Retreat, Dieppe Bay, St. Kitts in August 2016 to celebrate my birthday and our 30th wedding anniversary. Upon entering, my wife stated that the property was better than she had imagined. The property was bright, clean, peaceful, quiet, and open...the vaulted ceilings were nice. We enjoyed meals out on the deck every chance we could; nothing compares to the peaceful ocean waves while quietly dining by candlelight. The pool invited us in on several occasions and stepping from the living room into the water was a bonus. We spent our mornings seated together on the deck off the master bedroom, it was the perfect place for quiet meditation. We saw our stay as a chance to unplug and think about what matters most to us. Although, periodically, we went into to town, or took the ferry to Nevis as well as visited Port Zante.

We highly recommend The King's Retreat!

A great location for those who want to recharge their batteries in a local island setting

  • 5 of 5

This clean, well maintained property has everything you need for self catering, relaxation and meditation. A great place to reconnect with nature and spend time snorkeling on a reef in front of the property (if you are a good swimmer). The setting is isolated from the hubbub of Caribbean cruise ship tourism and provides wonderful sunsets featuring the neighboring Dutch island of Sint Eustatius from the deck.

The owners, Alan and Heidi King, along with Bernice, the local conscientious housekeeper, provide wonderful support from booking through to the end of the stay to ensure a smooth and hassle free vacation.

We would definitely recommend the King's Retreat to family and friends.

Relaxing quiet open tropical home with constant sound of waves breaking over reefs.

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful and clean two bedrooms with views of the ocean even from the kitchen window. The kitchen was fully equipped for cooking which included one night when we had a lady prepare a wonderful local fish meal. The rooms and bathrooms are spacious and the deck is the place to enjoy your drinks and meals. The property is very well maintained and the owner's mother couldn't be more helpful for getting anything you needed. She bought the fish for the meal she help set up and she got us a guide for climbing the volcano. We couldn't get better customer service in a 5 star hotel.

Our only complaint was that the pool never warmed up as it lies in the shade between two units most of the day. Incidentally, the pool is shared by this other unit.

Since the property isn't near most beaches we would recommend renting a car to enjoy the island beaches with the shacks that provide food, beverages, umbrellas, chairs, water sports, etc. We loved our daily outings to the southern part of the island as well as our hike up the highest volcano in the Leeward Islands. Most of all we like the low key unspoiled feeling the island presents in contrast to other overdeveloped tourist destinations.
