Please note: Before confirming your reservation, the receipt of a copy of the primary reservation holder's valid Driver's License is required.

Step into a timeless place where the magnificent natural surroundings are beautifully matched and enhanced by this stately, elegant and very comfortable and luxurious lakefront mansion of the old-world style. Featuring 3 bedrooms, each with a private bath, each wing of the mansion features breathtaking views of beautiful Horseshoe Lake, a large, recreational lake just 30 miles from Memphis, Tennessee. The home sits on several acres of luscious wooded grounds with stately Bald Cypress trees along the bank of the lake, giving the home its singular character. The Snowden House, built by one of the founding families of Memphis, is the oldest residence on Horseshoe Lake and features many architectural details including a grand marble-floored entrance with a sweeping staircase, a fan window highlighted the antique crystal chandelier, a Carrera marble fireplace and three-panel gilded mirror over the fireplace, all heirlooms from one of the original family homes in Memphis. All of the formal living areas are on the second floor in the style of antebellum Louisiana-style plantation homes along the Mississippi river. Three sets of French doors open out from the formal living room which features 12 + foot high ceilings and signature cove lighting from its beautifully molded soffets, onto the spectacular screened porch which affords a sweeping view of the lake through ivy-patterned wrought iron. There is a large, formal dining area, as well as a more casual breakfast and lunch porch completely surrounded by windows looking out over lake and woods – perfect for lounging away the afternoon, watching the birds and the sparkling waves of the lake. There is a live-in kitchen that is shared with the owner and is available for preparation of simple meals, as well as a charcoal grill for outdoor cooking. And the more casual downstairs area is great for relaxed family get togethers with easy access to the beautiful Horseshoe Lake, which, at one time, was an arm of the mighty Mississippi.

During the summer months a pontoon boat is available upon request for an additional charge, as the lake is ideal for family gatherings and enjoying a full range of water-related recreation. Wonderful picnics under the full canopy of the great oak trees on the bank are a big favorite throughout the summer, as the breeze off of the lake keeps the outdoors pleasant throughout the summer. During fall, winter and spring seasons, the home is a favorite for lovers of wildlife, fishing, bird watching, canoeing, or just building a nice fire and enjoying the tranquility of such an elegant yet comfortable setting.

The master bedroom on the second floor and facing the lake, features a state-of-the-art memory foam topped king bed, upholstered headboard, hardwood floors with comfortable wool area rug. The master bath is your own private marble-lined spa with a sumptuously deep marble-decked 6' long, deep bath with your own private view of the lake, while the marble lined shower sports 6 Kohler shower tiles plus a wonderful, Grohe overhead shower spout. Step out onto the heated travertine marble floor and seep yourself in the luxury of this lakeside master bath.

There are two more bedrooms on the second floor, each with their own private bath and views of the lake. The third floor is occupied by your hostess and is completely separate from the main parts of the house. On the ground floor, guests enjoy a more casual atmosphere where they enjoy a large screen TV, a library bar with a large table for games and other gatherings on rainy days, and men's and ladies' dressing rooms where guests may change into their bathing suits and have outside access to the lake.

On the west end of the property is a private pier with chaise lounge chairs and sun umbrella for sunbathing and enjoying the view, a perfect spot for a swim on a warm summer day!

PLEASE NOTE: the owner lives in her private quarters on the third floor of the home.

About Martha McKay

The Snowden House was built by my grandparents, Bob and Grace Snowden. In 2005, I bought the property from my family and spent several years restoring it to its present condition. While we were born at Horseshoe Lake, we grew up in San Francisco and traveled back to Horseshoe Lake every summer during our childhood, which instilled a deep and abiding love for the home and all of the happy memories there.

For my guests who come to stay at Snowden House, I am available to cater your meals for you if you wish. I love to cook, and can prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner as per your request. Also, please be aware that I live in my own private quarters on the third floor of the home and am available to help with any questions about the area, but also am able to give you full privacy, as per your wishes.

A lovely, relaxing haven with an incredible host.

  • 5 of 5

My sisters and I spent two wonderful days enjoying the surroundings, visiting on the screened in porch that overlooks the lake, playing cards in the sunroom, and enjoying the comfortable living room.

The only sounds are the birds, owls, and the occasional fisherman paddling by. It is like going back in time. Martha, the host, could not have been more helpful. She is a granddaughter of the owners of the home and will share the history of the home and her family if you would like. I recommend that you don't miss it!

The home is both elegant and comfortable which can be difficult to achieve. Thoughtful touches throughout make this one of the best, if not the best, vacation rentals I have visited.

We will be back next fall for our "sisters retreat" and feel very fortunate that as we live in Memphis it is only a 45 minute drive to this incredible spot.

Cousins' Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This couldn't have been a more perfect place for us to have our mini cousin reunion! For us the location was ideal - half way between the cousins! It offered both the solitude we were seeking and the availability of some excellent dining and sightseeing opportunities! Martha was a most gracious host, and was willing to share her knowledge of the history of this beautiful home. My only wish is that we could have had at least another week to enjoy the surroundings!

Awesome experience

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely time at this unique home on Horseshoe lake. Martha's kindness in sharing the family history and providing a personal tour of the house made the experience extra special. The house is a mixture of old family pieces and modern features. Beds were comfortable.

The owner, Martha, lives on the 3rd floor. We shared the kitchen with no problems. Martha is very friendly and accommodating.

The house is located a little farther from major restaurants and stores than usual(15-20 miles into West Memphis). However, it is surrounded by wonderful fields of cotton, soybeans and rice. We got to see the cotton fields getting ready for harvest. Each day the cotton fields looked whiter than the day before. The grounds are peaceful and private. Horseshoe Lake is lovely. We particularly enjoyed sitting on lounge chairs at the end of the dock to read and watch the local turtles swimming around. The screened in porch was a favorite place to sit.

We would recommend guests stay several days just to appreciate it all.

Thanks, Martha, for helping make this a great vacation.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Cathleen. You and your entire family were perfectly lovely guests and I am so glad that you had the opportunity to stay a week and settle in to this peaceful place. I particularly enjoyed our friendly visits around the kitchen table, getting to know you and your family as time allowed. Thanks for leaving everything so neat and tidy and please do come visit again, someday. Martha McKay Snowden House
