Wonderful large lake home for family and company gatherings! Unique and quaint in so many ways! The house sits on 18 wooded acres on Lake Hickory and Drowning Creek (really? Who named that creek?) for a quiet, rural setting. The house sits on a hill with a short, but steep, walk to the lake (or take the little road down for an easier walk). The lake is hard to see from the house in the summer because of all the trees.
The house features 2 Master Bedrooms (1K/1BA, 1Q/1BA) for maximum privacy that are attached to the home with a covered walkway. The main house has 2 bedrooms (1Q&2T/BA and 1Q&1T/BA), a bunk room (2 built-in bunk beds), and a 3rd floor tower (2T BUT accessible only by a ladder). We also have 3 outdoor showers.
The fun never ends with a enormous separate garage that features basketball, foosball, pool, ping pong, darts and other games. There is a bocce court and horseshoes close to the main house. There is also an outdoor fire pit in front of the house and another one by the lake.
A railroad track runs at the bottom of the hill next to the lake. The train runs a few times a week (during the day) and we love to wave to the engineer for a horn whistle. The track really gives the property a cool vibe!
This is a one of a kind great place to relax and enjoy family and friends!!! A true retreat!!!
Our families are best of friends...FRamily. We have enjoyed sharing this home and creating great memories. Hope you will too!
Claire Tuttle purchased this house in 2012
We wanted a place to gather that was stress free and gave us a great platform to just be together. There is a ton to do....or just chill in a hammock. All good.
The home is unique in many ways. The third floor tower with twin beds in only accessible by a ladder built with metal pipes (it is a great view when you get up there). The bunk beds are also built into the wall. There is a big glass garage door that opens to the screen porch to make the entire downstairs feel like the porch. The outdoor showers are terrific...if it isn't freezing outside!
The property sits on a hill next to the lake. There is a train track that runs below (but it only runs a few times a week and during the day so it will not wake you at night. We look forward to the train coming through on the rare occasion and wave to 'Mickey' the conductor!).
With both the lake and creek next to the property, many water options are available.
Just the perfect home for get-togethers. The owner is incredibly accommodating and goes out of her way to make sure everything is perfect. This is the third time I have rented this property and it will not be my last.
There are no words to describe how perfect this home is. I can not wait to go back and I recommend anyone who has the chance to visit this beautiful property to take it! Could not have been more perfect!
Has everything you need, by the river and wonderful experience!
Claire's house was perfect to accommodate a large group which included lots of 22-26 year old boys. The house was TOTALLY equipped with everything that we needed and was easy to keep clean with the concrete floors etc... The rec room/garage area was perfect for the boys and kept them (and their noise) away from the parents in the main house. I will highly recommend this house to anyone who needs a large house in Hickory.
We had a really great time! Long, curvy driveway that separates you from the rest of the world. It is pretty impressive to drive up to. Very private, on several acres so no neighbors to see and very serene. Had all of our family up and there was plenty of room for 13 people aging in range from 7 to 65. The younger kids enjoyed the games provided, the older kids got away to the bunk area and played video games and watched movies, and everyone loved the recreation area at the garage. We played basketball, ping pong, darts and pool. The place was well stocked with everything we needed from plenty of towels, place settings, and paper products to everything we needed to enjoy the recreation area in the garage. We cooked out on the grill provided and roasted marshmellows. Really loved the detached masters, when we were ready to go to bed, not a sound traveled from the main living area or the garage.
We rented a boat at the nearby marina and enjoyed the dock area where we also tied up our jets ski we brought with us, which we were able to put in at another marina with a boat ramp for $5. The lake was beautiful with hardly anyone else out, so not crowded at all.
The town of Hickory is very close by, so you are able to get to a grocery store and anything else you might want or need within minutes.
My only very minor complaints were the lack of view from the house to the lake and the steep hike to the dock area. The gravel road was helpful as it was a little bit easier for my in-laws to navigate by foot to get to the dock, but still very steep. Oh, and do not attempt to drive down to the dock, even if you have 4-wheel drive. I would strongly recommend a sign at that turn off to discourage vehicles, or a chain to keep people from attempting it. I would also suggest replacing the galvanized pipe ladders to the loft areas with ships ladders; I was planning on having the littles sleep in the loft, but did not trust they could navigate the steep pipe steps if they needed to come down at night to use the bathroom. The teens managed just fine, though!
Overall, it was a fabulous experience and we would definitely come again. It was so enjoyable for everyone, and it was great having the room for eveyone to sit together whether it was inside for meals or outside on the screened porch. We enjoyed the area so much, we are considering buying a vacation home on Lake Hickory.
This beautiful, spacious home was perfect for our gathering of the clan! We took advantage of its myriad of activities - lake access, woodsy walks, bocce ball, basketball, ping-pong, pool table, puzzles, games, and large family kitchen/great room - as well as lovely, breezy verandas for quieter conversations. Casually elegant country decor made everyone feel at home instantly. Everything was spotless upon our arrival, and the concrete floors - softened by area rugs - made it easy to keep it that way throughout our active stay. The short, pleasant walk through magical Carolina woods to the lake gave us easy access to our local family member's boat and fun water play. (We appreciated having their home nearby since the lake house's extra beds in some bedrooms couldn't accommodate all our family configurations.)
We definitely recommend this gorgeous spot! - and hope to return again someday ourselves.

Our home is located near Hickory, NC. We are about an hour away from the mountains of NC - both Asheville and Blowing Rock for great hikes, shopping, and other attractions. We are a little over an hour from the Charlotte Airport. A car is necessary as this is a rural setting.
There are mountain bike trails 10 minutes from the home. There is a marina to rent pontoon boats or bring your own and keep at the dock.
Hickory has several wonderful restaurants. They also have a nice science center and art museum.
