Overview

About the property

Modern comfortable studio in 400 year old building in heart of Bayeux

Studio St Jean is a ground floor studio apartment for A MAXIMUM OF 2 people in a 400 year old building in the heart of the medieval town of Bayeux.

The studio has a full-sized double bed, a comfortable sofa, free wifi, a dining table with padded dining chairs, a fully fitted kitchen area with hob, sink, microwave and fridge with freezer compartment. There is also a brand new shower room/WC with extra large shower cubicle. The studio overlooks a private courtyard and there is a locked door to the main street.

Although the studio is on one of the main streets of Bayeux the double door entry means that you get no traffic noise from the street, just the occasional seagull to remind you that you are only 5 miles from the beach.

Rue St Jean is a pedestrianized zone during July and August and there is a weekly market on Wednesdays. On Saturday the main market is held in Place St Patrice, which is less than a 10 minutes walk. The UNESCO listed Bayeux tapestry is housed in a building less than 5 minutes walk away and the incredible medieval cathedral is a similar distance. You can pick up a shuttle bus to Mont St Michel or a D-Day tour bus less than 3 minutes from the studio and there are innumerable bars, cafés, restaurants and shops right outside your front door. There is a bike hire shop less than 50 yards away and the area around Bayeux is mostly flat. The railyway station is only a ten minute walk but we are happy to meet you off your train and take you to the studio by car for a small fee. In short, there is no real need to hire a car whilst you are in Bayeux but should you wish to do so, there is plenty of safe parking within less than 5 minutes of the studio.

The train from Paris takes 2 hours and there are frequent trains to Caen, which is only a 15 minute train journey.

We are happy to collect you from the train station on arrival.

About Sally Byrne

Michael and I are an Anglo/Irish couple who grew up 20 miles north of London, where we worked for many years. We moved to Normandy in 2003 and ran an award-winning B&B for 13 years but recently saw the need for more short-term self-catering accommodation in the highly popular town of Bayeux.

Sally Byrne purchased this apartment in 2015

Why Sally Byrne chose Lower-Normandy

Bayeux has always been one of our favourite towns so it was an easy decision to buy and renovate Studio St Jean in late 2014 when it came on the market. Since it's opening in May 2015 it has been full for 80% of the time, with some wonderful feedback from our guests.

What makes this apartment unique

Studio St Jean is located in one of the oldest streets in Bayeux, right in the heart of all the shops, restaurants and bars, with a fantastic market every Wednesday morning. We love that it is right in the centre of everything and yet, because it has a closed entrance it is still as peaceful and quiet as if it were out in the country.

Studio Thiaumerie is in the historic centre of Bayeux, less than a 5 minute walk to the cathedral and to the tapestry, which tells the story of William the Conqueror's invasion of England in 1066 and celebrates it's 950th anniversary in 2016. There is also an excellent art and history museum next to the cathedral and tours to the D-Day beaches and Mont St Michel leave less than a 3 minute walk from the apartment.

Beautiful, centrally located studio apt.

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I thoroughly enjoy our stay in this spacious, beautifully decorated studio. Sally and Michael were very helpful when they met us with information about the apartment and the town of Bayeux! The kitchenette complete with two burner stove, dishes, microwave was perfect for our needs. Sleeping was great with the comfortable bed and no noise from the street reached back to the appt. We were right in the center of Bayeux near a supermarket, lots of restaurants, pharmacies, etc. We were even close to the hospital which we needed since I broke a bone in my foot before leaving Rouen the day we arrived in Bayeux. We tried two of the restaurants Sally and Michael recommended and they were excellent! We found this to be a great base for visiting Bayeux, the D Day beaches and Mont St. MIchel.

Great studio in the heart of Bayeux

  • 5 of 5

We spent three wonderful nights in this perfect little studio. Right in the heart of Bayeux - no need for a car. The area is quiet at night an a great base to explore Normandy. Would definitely stay here again!

Bonus - meet and greet at the train station and fast internet!

Perfect Studio to Enjoy Bayeux

  • 5 of 5

The landlords, Sally and Michael, met us at the train station and personally updated us on all that we should know about the studio and the town of Bayeux. Loved the location, within easy walking distance of everything one would want to see, with the added bonus of being situated within steps of a grocery store, restaurants, bakeries, and the tourist office. The studio, with the updated bathroom, was extremely clean and well appointed for up to 2 guests (the space was maximized beautifully and more than met our needs) and had the most comfortable bed in our month-long sojourn in France. Because the ground-floor studio and the neighboring four or five other apartments were situated off the street around a small courtyard, city noise was almost non-existent. During our five-day stay at the end of the tourist season, we never had a problem with accessing everything that we needed. Highly recommend this rental for anyone wanting a great place to come back to after enjoying the many pleasures of historic Bayeux (including the magnificent cathedral and Bayeux Tapestries) and its surrounding areas. Be sure to include time for a one-day tour to the D-Day beaches and another day to visit Mont Saint Michel... superlative!

Small, but very comfortable apartment and it had everything you need. Great location right on the main street in Bayeux. Sally met us at the train and took us to the apartment. We enjoyed our stay at this accommodation.

Ideal location in Bayeux

  • 4 of 5

The apartment is in the perfect location for visiting the town of Bayeux and the D-Day beaches. It is a very short walk to anywhere in Bayeux (we even walked back from dropping off our rental car - not a short walk since it's on the opposite edge of town but it's definitely doable if you're fit, less than a 30 minute walk). Also close to the train station, less than 10 minute walk.

The place was very clean and comfortable, with everything needed either provided or available at the store a couple of doors down. Be aware that soap/shampoo is not provided so either bring your own or buy French as we did!

The courtyard is not "private" as in only for the use of this apartment. You access a shared walkway through a locked door from the street, and there are other apartments (one or two others, I think, upstairs) with access to the courtyard. There were kids playing with a soccer ball right out the window after we checked in on Friday. It was during the day so not a problem. Unfortunately, the upstairs neighbors had a late Friday night and were quite noisy, playing music and walking around for a couple of hours beginning at 2 am. The following two nights were quiet.

Parking was very convenient. Sally and her husband met us upon arrival and walked us to the apartment, showing us how to use everything and orienting us to the area. All in all it was a very pleasant stay in a perfect location.

Owner's Response: I'm sorry you experienced noise from the upstairs apartment. You were obviously very unlucky as we usually hear nothing from them. He is a D-Day tour guide and so starts work most mornings (including weekends at 8am) so this must have been an exception, like a birthday. Also the children playing with the soccer ball is something we have not experienced before. It happened while we were cleaning the apartment yesterday and I did speak to the parents asking them not to do this as there is a danger of breaking our windows! They were very understanding and said they would make sure it didn't happen again. Apart from that I'm pleased you enjoyed your stay.
