Playful Ravens is an elegant family home with 'heart enriching' views from most windows, it's expansive deck and hot tub. Located 10 minutes from downtown Homer, this retreat gives you quick access to everything Homer has to offer. Four spacious bedrooms give you ample privacy and room to spread out. A movie room with comfortable couches and loads of books is a great place to catch the latest Netflix, or to visit with family and friends. The kitchen is a cook's dream. All Clad pans, a double convection oven, and a large fridge/freezer make this a great place to cook memorable meals during your stay in Homer! Hopefully you will have luck fishing and bring home the main course yourself!!
A huge fire pit graces the side yard, perfect for a cozy bonfire around which to share drinks and memories during your time at Playful Ravens.
We call the home Playful Ravens because the air currents surrounding the bluff that this home sits on create the perfect spot for birds to soar and to play on the breezes. We regularly see Eagles, Ravens, and Hawks swirling on the updrafts.
The Master Suite has an incredibly comfortable king sized bed, a large bathroom and glass block/tiled shower area with two shower heads, a north-facing balcony large enough for sitting, plus a lovely, lofted reclining area with a love seat and chair with matching ottoman facing the remarkable views of Homer, the Homer Spit with a flat screen TV if you ever tire of the view. The TV has a Roku box that streams Netflix and Amazon Prime Movies for free. There is also a Water Rower rowing machine if you need to catch a quick and effective workout during your stay.
On the main floor with the Dining Room, Living Room, and Kitchen there is a bedroom with a full sized bed with a log frame and a full bath with a tub/shower. The lower level has two bedrooms with queen sized beds, the movie room - a large room with two love-seats and a wall of bookshelves, and the laundry. The lower-level bathroom has a toilet, a urinal, a sink and a shower. Our home has in floor heating and a Blaze King wood stove.
The spacious deck has a large table and benches for lunches and dinners immersed in the view, four adirondack chairs, and a hot tub. There is also a grill located on the deck off the kitchen.
Summer visitors regularly see bear, moose, sandhill cranes, and eagles at our home.
There are lovely hiking trails only minutes away.
We are an Alaskan Commercial Fishing family. We spend our summers on Chisik Island fishing for Salmon which leaves our lovely home open to share with visitors like you!
During the winter Jon is a teacher at a local public school, Fireweed Academy. Paula volunteers and does fund raising for a local school and organizations. She is studying Piano. We are truly honored to share our special piece of Homer Alaska with you.
Paula Kulhanek purchased this house in 2012
For eight years we drove past this home on our way home. We lived 'off the grid' on 10 acres with many animals in a beautiful timber frame home, hauling our water. When we returned home from fishing, this home that we had passed so many times was up for sale. After taking a tour, we were hooked! Spectacular views, so much space for our growing family, and closer to town so our kids could enjoy more of the opportunities Homer offers. It has been a terrific move for us.
This property and home have drawn our eyes for years. Once this home graced the cover of Alaska magazine, thanks to a beautiful picture by Scott Dickerson.
This is an incredibly well-built and lovely home. The yellow cedar logs that create the home were harvested in British Columbia and hauled up the Alcan Highway. The interior walls are so warm and inviting as well as a little challenging to hang art on :-)
The entire front wall of the home is eight windows and a sliding glass door - the view here is truly part of the home. We never tire of gazing at the mountains and glaciers across Kachemak Bay. Watching the Homer Spit, Homer, and the Homer Airport as the sunsets finishes and the many lights come on.
Soaking in the 104 degree hot tub gazing at Northern Lights is one of our favorite pastimes and there are plenty of stars and satellites to watch for if it is not Northern Lights Season.
Playful Ravens will allow you to feel completely comfortable and at ease while you are on your trip. Comfy furniture, cozy beds, and the spectacular deck to watch the sunset from (one of our favorite past times).
The entire glorious package is just minutes away from downtown Homer. Ten to be exact, and those ten minutes of driving are beautiful! We see Moose, Porcupine, Eagles, Ravens, Hawks, Owls, and Lynx on our way to town. And that is just the Wildlife... the expansive views driving down the hill are delightful.
The deck, fire pit, and hot tub are very special parts of this home... great places to make memories with family and friends!
Since 2012, my family, friends and I have rented the Playful Ravens several times. We sometimes stayed there two times in the summer. This well appointed log home offers fabulous, breath taking views of several glaciers as well as the Homer Spit. We are close to Homer, but far enough away for some privacy as well as wildlife viewing. This is Alaska at its best!
The Kulhanek family is first rate, and has always treated us well. We’ll definitely be staying here again!
This place was AMAZING. The property lived up to everything that Paula had promised. The property was clean and well maintained. We immediately felt at home. The weather was not our friend during our stay at Homer, but this property made the stay a success. We enjoyed being able bake, use the hot tub, and fire ring. Our nights were complete with beautiful sunsets and some competitive card games. Thanks for opening up to your home.
My wife and 3 children (7, 11, 13) stayed ~ 3 weeks here. You are up on Skyline Drive overlooking the Bay and the "Homer Spit". The house is GREAT!! Awesome stay. The home is very well appointed. You want for nothing. The view is wonderful. When you step out of the shower...you are looking at the glacier!! Your view is the 2-3 glaciers that are immediately across Kachemak Bay. It is amazing to think that we hiked around Glacier Point and up to the Glacier Lake....there were icebergs floating in the glacier lake. We also did Halibut Cover for lunch. Great trip. My sons and I went king salmon fishing and with only 2 fish we ate for many meals. We went up and hiked the Russian River trail and saw salmon jumping up the stream to their spawning grounds!! Very cool. We also did a fly in bear seeing tour which was stretching my comfort level...but my wife and kids love it!!
Homer is a small town. Very informal and casual. Especially coming from the mid-Atlantic East Coast region.... Jean, hiking pants, boots, and flannel shirts will do. RESTAURANTS are wonderful. Cafe Cup, The Homestead (fine dinner), Twin Sisters Bakery (get the sticky bums), Thai Restaurant (Little Mermaids), Fat Olives (pizza), La Baleine Cafe (breakfast), and Duncan House diner (breakfast) all very good recommendations for dining. Caribou--NO GO
Overall, great place, great house (cabin), great location, great views. Paula was very accommodating. Couldn't ask for a better owner!!
This property was great and I definitely recommend it to other people. The log home is beautiful and well built itself and the location is amazing! I mean, how many homes can you find that has the view of a glacier right in front of you with a binocular handy to enjoy the closeup.
We were a party of 8 (4 adults and 4 boys from 10 to 16), stayed in this home for 3 nights. There was enough room for every body (4 bedrooms), it was very clean and well organized. There was an impressive collection of books to read, and you certainly were not short of recipe with all variety of cookbooks available.
We very much enjoyed our stay!
Everything about Playful Ravens was excellent. We loved the home and all it had to offer, the view, the location, and the ease of communicating with Paula! Our family had a perfect vacation in Homer. Our highlight was our halibut catch and preparing it on the grill at this wonderful home. Would recommend this vacation home to anyone!
What a wonderful house. It is all the description said it was and more. The view is panoramic and sweeping of the bay and snow capped mountains. Absolutely breathtaking. Paula was great to talk to and Nancy, the house Manager took excellent care of us. The kitchen was perfectly stocked with excellent cookware, spices etc. so we took advantage of it and cooked some delicious dinners. From the deck you can see one of the glaciers which sparked our interest so we took a trip across the bay and hiked in to the lake at the foot of it. I can't imagine anyone finding a better home for a stay in Homer.
Our family met from all parts of the globe to stay at Playful Ravens, a beautiful and comfortable home with spectacular views of mountains, glaciers and Katchemak Bay. We caught halibut in the ocean and prepared delectable family meals in the fabulous kitchen. Relaxing in the hot tub on the deck in the evenings looking out at the amazing views was a particular favorite experience for everyone. The resources and recommendations provided by our hosts were excellent. There are so many things see and experience in the Homer area! We created many lifetime memories and would love to return again!
Homer is a nature lover's nirvana where common sights can include moose grazing, a black bear crossing the road or porpoises playing in the surf. The charming seaside city, overlooking Kachemak Bay and the Kenai Mountains, can be the starting point for a multitude of exciting adventures, including glacier skiing and viewing and guided kayak tours. Naturally splendid Kachemak State Park offers even more outdoor fun, with miles of excellent backcountry hiking trails. Explore nearby Halibut Cove, a unique fishing and artists' enclave where the roads are made of water. Or head to downtown Homer to sample delicious seafood, art galleries, museums and shops that sell locally made crafts. A trip to Homer would not be complete without casting a rod for salmon or halibut, the area's major catches. Head to the Homer Spit and try your luck from the shore or join a chartered fishing boat excursion. No matter which activities you choose, time spent in Homer is sure to be an unforgettable experience.
