Great spot for Caye Caulker visit
We really enjoyed our visit to Caye Caulker and the Sapphire House. The house was clean, roomy, and private, on a large lot full of tropical trees. The location was good, too; close enough to downtown to walk but in a quiet residential area away from the bars & noise. Also not far from the airstrip and the interesting trail around the southern end of the caye.
The owners and management were all very responsive and easy to work with. We were most appreciative of the comprehensive & convenient transport arrangements -- from the airport in Belize City to the water taxi terminal, the round-trip water taxi tickets, and the golf-cart taxi ride from the boat landing to the house. If this is your first stop in Belize, do let Sapphire House's managers arrange your trip from the airport -- they offer much better prices on water taxi tickets than you can get on your own.
Unfortunately, due to a delay, we arrived a day late and were able to stay only two nights. Also, it rained much of the time, so we didn't get to snorkel. But it was nice to just walk around and sight-see. Next time we'll be here longer.
Great space, awesome A/C, separate beds in the second bedroom!!
The house is a great space for family. Air conditioning and fans keep it very comfortable for sleeping. Furniture is all a little firm and would have appreciated a full size couch instead of a love seat but it was nice to have real furniture instead of futons which so many island homes have. We loved having the porch and the island breezes that come through because you're up on the second level in the tree tops.
It is fairly private from the neighbors but they are on both sides.
We hesitated renting here because the owners don't do the payment guarantee through VRBO so we had to send them a certified cheque -(like sending cash to a stranger) However we decided it was worth the risk and all was great! The management team was great but their rented bicycles could use some maintenance. They were okay but we had some loose handle bars and chains etc. Had to go to the office a few times to deal with bike issues.
Back to the house. We enjoyed being there, Be aware that things always look better in pictures. Things in the house are a little tired. It needs a paint refresh, and the coffee maker and toaster oven have seen better days but it's a beach house and everything worked. Most importantly the blender worked :)
Fresh fruit - frozen and made into smoothies- amazing!
Also the restaurant guide book in the house filled in from past guests was an awesome touch! Loved to refer to it!!
Over all it was a great place to stay, out of the busy part but only a short bike away from everything!
We loved it and would stay their again!
A nice big house on a sweet little island
Sapphire house was just what we needed for our visit to Caye Caulker. I've been staying on the island for a few weeks every winter for the past 27 years. We normally stay in small hotel rooms but our favored hotel closed. I chose Sapphire House because it wasn't located in the middle of town, which tends to be noisy. You'll want a bike, but once you have it you're only 5 short minutes from anything you need.
The house is spacious and simple, high enough to catch ocean breeze even though it's a couple blocks from the sea. There is A/C which works nicely if you really need to cool down the house on very hot days.
The island staff caretaking the house were very attentive to small needs and questions. The balcony is great for hanging out, and the foliage around the house is teaming with birds. It's very close to the airport, so if you come in by plane, you really don't need a taxi (golf cart) to get there.
The TV worked. The wifi worked. We knew ahead of time the washer did not work, so that was no problem. If you need to wash clothes, that can be arranged. The beds were comfy.
I'd definitely stay here again.
solid house, good location, social problems in Caye C.
The house is fine. Seems solid. No view of the ocean but only a block to the beach and you can walk to town. We went to fly fish. The fishing was challenging in some ways. There are definitely fish but wading is possible in only a few areas. The food was good but we were burglarized. The police were not helpful and some locals think they are part of the problem. I have no way of knowing. We heard many other reports from locals which suggested that this is common. One man we met at the police station said he had lived there for 17 years and he gets robbed twice a year. To rob a house with 4 adult men while they sleep is pretty brazen and how people get hurt. This is a problem for a community trying to establish a tourist economy. I polled the guys and they were not sure that we would return. SC
Exactly What We Needed!
My husband and I had a wonderful stay at Sapphire House. The place itself is a cute villa surrounded by a large yard that is well maintained and full of exquisite blooms, interesting textures and colors only native to the tropics. We had coffee in the mornings on the porch. There, we were eye-level with all the birds that perched in the canopy of a tall tree. They were not at all afraid of us. The house has a bird guidebook, too, so you can identify what you’re seeing.
Inside, the house is nicely furnished and clean. The kitchen has pretty much everything you need though some of the island food is so cheap, you may not want to bother with preparing meals. There’s a tamale man who rides around on a large tricycle with a cooler strapped to the front. His wife’s tamales are truly a treat. Also, there’s a new, open air pupusaria on the island (across from the fake Starbucks) that’s open after 3pm. As you are walking out to The Split, you should also try any of the three vendors that cook right on the beach. All of them are very good and an economical choice. The restaurants are expensive. We also enjoyed the bakery and a man who sells baked goods from his tricycle. The only bad food we had on the island was at the Chinese restaurant across from the bakery.
But back to the house! There’s a wonderful library (mostly fiction), so no need to bring books. The internet worked perfectly, even in some very torrential storms. The washer also worked well. Any issues that came up were dealt with by Caye Caulker Rentals very quickly. The sisters that run the agency are wonderful people and we enjoyed talking with them. The only drawback about the agency is that they will tack on 5% to you total cost if you are paying with a credit card. So your total on the contract is not correct if you are using a credit card. We found that the 5% charge is pretty standard on the island if you are using credit cards. We used the ATM at the bank from time to time to avoid extra costs.
My husband and I enjoyed snorkeling at The Split, the reef off Caye Caulker and the preserve off Ambergris Caye. We also jogged around the island and took the shelter dogs out for a little exercise. But mostly, we decompressed. We spent two wonderful weeks at Sapphire House with a side trip to Guatemala to see Tikal and Flores. Sapphire house was all we had hoped for and was exactly what we needed.
The perfect place to "go slow"
Sapphire House was everything we hoped it would be for our first trip to Caye Caulker, Belize. Our family of 4 was perfectly comfortable in this great little beach getaway. Communication with both the owners and the property manager was fantastic - even with our last minute rental request. The water and airport were only a short walk and there's a quiet, cozy little neighborhood bar just a couple of doors down. Walking to town was a bit longer but very doable - if it's not too hot. The house was fully equipped so we could even stay in and make a meal if we chose to do so. Wi-Fi was a little sketchy but when on vacation - who needs to be on the computer anyway? It worked if we needed to check emails but not for much more than that.
Overall, Sapphire House was exactly what we needed for a relaxing family trip. We will definitely stay again the next time we need to "go slow" for a while on Caye Caulker.
