City of New Orleans Permit #17STR-06685
Fully Furnished quaint and quiet 2 bedroom 1 bath shotgun double has all the charm of its 120 years, yet all the modern conveniences, including fully equipped kitchen, 2 bedrooms (queen beds), 1 full baths, and is very tastefully decorated. Located in the historic, quiet, and charming Uptown neighborhood of University/Carrollton, 4 blocks from Tulane University, 5 blocks from the streetcar line and 20 minutes to the French Quarter. The University/Carrollton neighborhood has the wonderful Maple Street corridor and the eclectic-hip Oak Streets all within walking distance or a bike ride!! Both offer dozens of wonderful restaurants, bars, coffeehouses and boutique shopping. Just minutes to Audubon Park, the Universities, Downtown or the French Quarter by streetcar or bus. Offstreet Parking for 1 car is available.
Master bedroom has 2 large built out closets, and a queen size bed. The second bedroom has a queen size bed as well. Internet, WiFi, and cable TV for your convenience and entertainment. All-White high thread-count fine linens and towels. High-end super comfortable mattresses with extra-comfort protective washable covers and duvets. Fully stocked modern kitchen with fridge, coffeemaker, microwave, dinnerware, toaster oven, beverages in refrigerator, single all stainless sink, dishwasher and professional series appliances, & gas range. Dining/Breakfast area adjacent to the kitchen.
The bathroom has the original claw foot tub/shower combination which is charming and I do like guests to know this in case they have difficulties climbing in and out of it.
The unit is 1,100 square feet fully furnished. Tradition holds that the name "shotgun" derives from the notion of firing bird shot through the front door and out the rear without touching a wall. The term itself postdates the shotgun's late-19th-century heyday, not appearing in print until the early 20th century. Since you have to walk through one room to get to another, the home is not completely private from one bedroom to the next, but more semi-private. Doors cannot be shut off as it hinders the flow of the central A/C system.
The laundry room is stocked outside in rear shared yard with high-efficiency full size washer and dryer.
Owner lives on premises and prefers quiet, mature guests. 4 people max (no exceptions), no pets, no smoking inside.
Please ask if you have a special budget you are working with and I will see what I can do to help you out.

About Melinda Alfonso
“Way down yonder in New Orleans In the land of dreamy scenes There’s a garden of Eden You know what I mean.” - Louis Armstrong I have loved New Orleans since the moment I laid eyes on it which is part of the charm being a true New Orleanian!! My parents were born and raised here as well and I was fortunate to have been offered to buy the family home my Dad grew up in so this little shotgun has a special piece of my heart. I attended Loyola University just a few blocks away and worked in the hospitality industry as a wedding & event planner for 15 years. I know all the secrets our city has to offer and would love to share them with you.
Melinda Alfonso purchased this House in 2000
Why Melinda Alfonso chose East Carrollton
I believe that creating a space for guests in my home involves more than providing a comfortable place to sleep; it's an opportunity to make them feel welcome and ensure that their time spent with me is memorable. If a guest needs anything I am right next door and am happy to lend a helping hand. Sitting in my backyard with guest sipping some Coffee & Chicory in the mornings is very enjoyable so bring your favorite PJ's! No make-up required!
What makes this House unique
Anyone who has been to New Orleans knows that it is a unique, remarkable, one-of-a-kind city. Carrollton is a part of New Orleans that is uptown from the French Quarter. It is on higher ground than the area of New Orleans that was damaged in the Katrina hurricane, so Carrollton went undamaged. Carrollton is at the end of the St. Charles streetcar line and the other end is Canal Street. Carrollton is home to Tulane University and Loyola University. Many University employees reside in Carrollton including professors, teachers and students. They patronize the many businesses and restaurants that are nearby because this is a mixed residential/commercial neighborhood. Carrollton's location is a 20 minute drive to the French Quarter. Carrollton has many interesting restaurants, shops and music venues, the French Quarter is generally a more touristy area. Carrollton was incorporated in 1833 and still has much of the same Victorian residential architecture. Some of the historical sites in Carrollton are Old Carrollton City Hall and Palmer Park, which has a craft fair on the last Saturday of the month. This event is called the Arts Market of New Orleans and features live music also. Residents and tourists find this event to be great fun. You can check out some of the area's attractions at:

Amazing property in a fabulous location with a spectacular hostess!
We loved every aspect of our stay. The only odd part about the unit, is that all of the rooms connect from front to back, so if privacy is an issue, this might not be your perfect place. But I assure you that Melinda was amazing, hospitable and gracious. The unit has such charm and is a welcome place to stay while in NOLA. I highly recommend this cottage (except that if I recommend it to you, then I might be able to rent it:) lol!)
Clean and felt like I was at home
Very nice property and owner. Clean, clean, clean. Quite neighborhood area and convenient to popular food and attractions areas via walking or UBER. Parking in driveway a plus. Kitchen set up a plus with extras. Beds and linens were great as well as the front living room area. If you are looking for a place that offers sanctity, but close to all the NOLA attractions, I would highly recommend Hillary Gardens as your destination point.
Absolutely loved this rental and we stay in many!! Everything was as shown and we will definitely return
Melinda met us with some New Orleans Favorite welcome snacks which turned out to be a fantastic late night treat for us. The apartment was light and bright, just like the pictures. It was very clean and the location was excellent. Plenty of towels in the bath and a fully stocked kitchen!! We walked to the local restaurants and night clubs and caught the street car downtown a few days just as Melinda suggested. I highly recommend taking the street car and seeing all the historic old homes along St Charles Avenue. You can get off and have lunch at many restaurants and the suggestions given to us were all wonderful. Melinda was even so gracious as to give us a ride one night to Frenchmen Street to hear some local Jazz Music. She arranged tickets to a sold out show for us with her "connections". I highly recommend this vacation rental and it is so convenient to Tulane University. Before booking, we asked her for a discount to work with our budget and she graciously accommodated us. Will definitely be returning and we made a special friend!
Had a blast hanging out with you guys and can't wait for your next visit and thank you for your kind words about my home
What a fabulous place to stay! The home was well appointed with great beds, spacious rooms, local art and very nice furnishings. Our lovely host, Melinda, was very gracious and accessible. The home was well stocked with more than necessary. She gave us great tips on food and great antique finds. We felt very safe and comfortable coming and going in the area. Would definitely stay here again.
Perfect New Orleans vacation rental!
We so enjoyed our stay in NOLA. It was a treat to stay in a "shotgun" house..it felt so authentic and was just much nicer than a typical hotel experience. The house was clean and comfortable and we loved having a kitchen and even a washer and dryer. Melinda was a great hostess. She shared tips about good restaurants and jazz bands which were easy to get to. We loved the uptown area...away from the touristy spots and a pleasant, safe neighborhood. We hope to go back someday and will definitely recommend Hillary Gardens to friends and family!
1535 Hillary Street is centrally located with easy access to the Universities and Uptown nightlife. You can catch a cab, uber or trolley to the French Quarter. My home is very close to Ochsner hospital for any residents looking for a short term rental
