About The Owner

The owners, Steve and Janna, have lived and worked in Southern Oregon all their lives. They have a combined 50 years of work experience with the U.S. Forest Service and can be a useful source of information about local sights, native plants and the wild animals in the area…as well as local history. Their son Jesse returned to his hometown of Prospect back in 2010, and he, along with his wife Samantha, have been helping with the Cabin along with other building projects his parents have been doing in the Prospect area. They, along with their two kids, enjoy the scenic beauty and quiet of Prospect life.

Why The Owner chose Southern Oregon

We actually built the cabin ourselves with the help of family and friends. We wanted to showcase our love of working with wood and this seemed the perfect place to do that.

What makes this cabin unique

The grounds are complete with beautiful landscaping, a hammock, fire pit, an outdoor fireplace under the covered patio, and even a set of outdoor tubs and an outdoor shower.

This site is within easy driving distance of Crater Lake National Park which is Oregon’s only National Park. The drive from the cabin to the South Entrance of the park is a 30 minute drive through a beautiful section of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. The Wild and Scenic Rogue River is just a short drive away from the cabin. There are many hiking and viewing opportunities on this majestic river. Rafting is also available for everyone from novice to experienced rafters. Raft rentals are available within a half hour drive.

Nearby attractions include Crater Lake National Park, Diamond Lake Resort, Rogue River Gorge, Natural Bridge on the Rogue, Mill Creek and Barr Creek Falls, Lost Creek Lake and the majestic Rogue River, just to name a few. Prospect is located along the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Steve & Janna – Rodney & I had a great visit in your cabin. We have a goal to step foot into all 50 states before Rodney turns 50 in 2015. “Fifty by fifty” is our slogan! We have now been to over 30 and your cabin by far has been the most creative, thoughtful and well stocked place we have stayed. Congrats on a job well done!Back home in Crawfordsville, Indiana, time is the biggest thing Rodney & I have to deal with. I am a dental hygienist and have to deal with time issues and scheduling all day. Rodney is a bindery machine operator in a printer and rotates shifts every 4 weeks so planning in advance ALWAYS results in timing issues. Once we arrived here, we didn’t worry or think about TIME!! We were able to relax and only focus on enjoying ourselves and seeing the sites. Thank you for providing and keeping this place a peaceful retreat. While in Prospect we enjoyed seeing Crater Lake, not only hiking but the boat excursion across the lake. We really enjoyed your local sites of Avenue of Giants, Mill Creek and Pearsony Falls. What a great little adventure so close to the cabin! We are so glad to have found you on VRBO and will recommend your cabin to anyone wishing to travel to Oregon.Good luck with your other projects and try to enjoy your “retirement” Cairns are landmarks for trails to help find your way. If we come to this area again, we will definitely be looking for yours!Rodney & Amy Lynn Byrd

Awesome property!!

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was beautiful inside and outside. I truly appreciated how clean it was. The shed in the back with the fireplace was very unique and we really enjoyed sitting out there with our morning coffee while birdwatching and having the cozy fire out there in the evening. We had all of the amenities we needed and more. The owner was extremely attentive and helpful! I really wish we could have stayed a couple more days to enjoy the cabin and the area. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone.

Jewel of a cabin

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay in this lovely little cabin. The owners decorated it with such thought - it's all in the little details. The cabin is well stocked in the kitchen. The beds/linens are very comfortable. The only odd thing is the hot water has a really bad smell - every time someone took a shower there was a really weird smell, same with hot water in the kitchen.

It's great location wise, it's about 35miles from crater lake(which was the main reason for our visit) and on the way there are viewpoints and snow parks.

I recommend getting to the cabin before sunset if this is your first time in these parts in winter.

Overall loved the stay and look forward to coming back again.

Owner's Response: We are glad that you enjoyed your stay at the cabin. We endeavor to keep it in top shape for every guest. We apologize very much for the smell of the water. The cabin is on a well and the hot water had not been used for some time. There is no problem with the water...just that it sat for too long without use, the bane of vacation rentals. We will make sure that it is drained when not in use for long periods so the odor does not linger.

Red blanket cabin

This was an amazing getaway for us as we celebrated 30 years of marriage. Everything was well thought out right down to the cozy robes. Crater lake was around 30 minutes away but a beautiful drive. I recommend this place and give it 5 stars!

Beautiful Cabin in the Forest

  • 5 of 5

Spent three nights with my wife in this beautiful cabin in Southern Oregon close to Crater Lake (about 35 miles). Very nice and comfortable furnishings and well appointed kitchen with all the amenities you could ask for. Bedrooms are very plush including sleep-number beds. Red Blanket Road to the property is paved (with very minimal traffic) and the cabin is just a few yards off the road. Never heard any noises during the daytime or at night. It rained all three days we were at the cabin, so could not enjoy the fire pit or outside bar-b-que, but enjoyed the peace and quiet. Television stations are limited, but picture quality is superb, and cabin has lots of DVD's (very popular movie selection) for your review, and a good supply of reading material. Cabin does not have a fireplace if that is important to you, but does have the outside fire pit for those cool (and dry) evenings. Recommend a stay of three or more days to really see the area. The old historic hotel in Prospect has a very nice restaurant (about two miles). Other restaurants are about a 10 mile drive, but food is very good (Beckie's is excellent). There is a market in Prospect for any necessities you may have forgotten. Cell phone service is OK, but depends on the provider. Property has a nice lawn area and is nicely landscaped. Would definitely stay here again and will recommend to our friends and family.

The cabin was perfect for our visit to Crater Lake.

  • 5 of 5

We visited here with friends from Germany and had a wonderful time. The cabin is so beautifully decorated. The woodworking throughout was so well done. We enjoyed the yard and playing "Ladder Golf". We had a delightful evening by the fireplace outside. It was very clean and well-equipped. Being welcomed with a free bottle of wine was an extra special touch! We did enjoy a delicious dinner at the Prospect Hotel restaurant in town. We even had a special dessert as we were celebrating a birthday. The drive to Crater Lake takes 30-45 minutes, depending on road work. There was snow at Crater Lake when we arrived and it added to the beauty of the place. We are grateful to our hosts. We enjoyed our stay here very much!
