Eskbank offers vintage character & modern facilities in a great location
- english, french
We currently live in 3 Eskbank Terrace it is our family home and we've been refurbishing it since we moved in. We were attracted by the spacious bedrooms, the potential it had and the beauty of it's location being so close to Edinburgh yet also close to beaches, golf courses, great cycling & walking routes. We loved the views across the lothian countryside and the ease of access to all manor of things, sports, shops, transport and tranquility. We were an army family that had spent time in the Middle East and roaming around Europe so it was just fabulous to set down roots & renovate this charming Victorian house bringing it into the 21st century. We've worked hard to maintain all it's character & have revealed some, as things were covered up during the 1970's to provide a more plain structure. But having none of that we've gone back to it's roots!
Iris purchased this House in 2015
Why Iris chose Dalkeith
We felt this house was perfect for a large family with scope to entertain friends and family too. My husband has Scottish blood and there was a great attraction to be close to the charming Gothic city of Edinburgh which feels so welcoming and intimate. It feels safe for children as there are great transport links and it offered us the opportunity to have dynamic culture on our doorstep. We love to visit the north of Scotland too and this is very easy when you want to dash up the M8 later on a Friday evening.
What makes this House unique
We felt the house was wondefully charming and offered us so much potential. We've expanded our ground floor space by taking down some outside walls and enlarging the space sympathetically with the Victorian character but offering a modern way of living. We were able to bring the 'outside in' to enjoy the garden more from the open plan space and the beautiful bay windows offer expansive views too! The children love to see the twinkly night lights of small towns in the distance from their top floor and the cosy atmosphere on their floor is all inviting and feels private for them too. The onsite parking was a bonus and a bus stop just 2 mins walk away is now a godsend for the whole family. You can choose to use your car or not! Being able to walk/cycle to a supermarket is a great benefit and the town of Dalkeith offers all those modern conveniences such as dry cleaning, post office, supermarket, tailor, picture framing and we're on the doorstep of the gorgeous Dalkeith Country Park, perfect for a stroll or even some unique shopping. Later when I get time I'd like to join the fitness & well being centre there!

A Fabulous Home away from Home!!!
Truly one of the finest Homes we have stayed in Scotland. Convenient to the city center and major highways. A modernized home originally built in the 1870’s. Clean, spacious and well appointed. A must stay in the Edinburgh Area. Iris and Andrew were tremendous hosts.
Thank you for your lovely words!
Thank you also for being such super guests and looking after our home, you were a treat to host and we're delighted you enjoyed your stay!
Lots of good wishes to you all!
A beautiful and welcoming home away
Our family of six had the good fortune to stay in this beautiful home for a week in August 2019. I use the word "home" intentionally as this house is very much a "home" - everything in the house appears intended to warmly welcome guests to relax and enjoy!
The pictures, while wonderful, do not do full justice to this house. Every room is beautifully and thoughtfully decorated, and there is plenty of room for the whole to spread out. The kitchen, eating and family room area were perfect for the whole family to congregate at the beginning and end of every day. We made full use of the extremely well-stocked kitchen to make family meals in the mornings and a few nights during our visit. With the Morrison's grocer a 10 - 15 minute walk away, or the Tesco about a 5 - 10 minute drive away, there were very easy options for allowing us to find everything we needed in terms of food and other essentials.
As for the bedrooms, all have very comfortable beds and beautiful furnishings. Again, this meant that, in addition to the family room and two sitting rooms, there was plenty of space where people could spread out and have their own time away from the rest of the family. The three full bathrooms and powder room are lovely - with good showers in two of the bathrooms and a good shower/tub combo in the other. This meant that everyone also had lots of room to get ready in peace every day.
We also took advantage of the washer and dryer during our visit. Both are full size and the laundry room is well equipped for hanging clothes if need be.
The weather was cool and drizzly (it is Scotland after all), so we didn't get much opportunity to enjoy the lovely gardens, but did get a chance to see a couple of deer enjoying the scenery!
With respect to location, this is a good location to use as a home base for travel. There is a bus stop within a 5 minute walk that was convenient for getting into Edinburgh without worrying about traffic and parking. Also, the local commuter train is a short drive away (5 minutes), and has a large parking lot. Of course, being outside of Edinburgh also meant that getting out to the Scottish Borders, St. Andrews, Dundee or over to the west coast was easy.
We also enjoyed the fact that we could walk to a local pub just down the street, or take a short drive to a some very nice restaurants.
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our time here and very highly recommend it to others. Thank you to Iris and Andrew for sharing your lovely home!
Thank you for your lovely feedback Stephanie!
It's such a treat to know you enjoyed yourselves and that you liked the house.
We're continually striving to make it better and better for our guests and ourselves of course and wonderful reviews like your's make it all very worthwhile!
Have a super autumn and lots of good wishes to you!
Awesome and clean and very comfortable
It was awesome and the place was unique
Waleed and his family were super guests. They communicated with us easily and looked after the house very well! We would love to have them back again anytime!
On check out day the family took great care to show us the house & respected that we like to keep the house relatively tidy. They were hugely thoughtful and we did a great WhatsApp check out together. I was very impressed by their attention to detail and the care they took!

An inviting city that makes you feel welcome with street performers, street art, bagpipes and tasty treats from all corners of the earth!
Eskbank itself just a few minutes drive from this delightful city can offer you great golf courses, Ryze an indoor trampoline centre, the Duke of Buccleuch's expansive grounds surrounding Dalkeith Country House, as well as Restoration Yard a place to wine & dine, shop and/or let the children run free in Fort Douglas. Newbattle Abbey where you can stretch your legs and admire the beautiful architecture and discover the history of it's birth. Just a few mins drive is the very interesting Scottish Mining Museum which is a great day out discovering the history of the area. Also Roslyn Chapel the inspiration behind the Da Vinci Code and the utterly gorgeous Glen where you can take a picnic and relish in splendour at the views, peace and tranquility. The beautiful Vogrie Park is also just a 10 min drive away which is also a location for the Saturday morning Park Run if you fancy a faster pace!

The inviting Links Golf courses of Gullane & North Berwick make a delightful day out. The coast line drive is a great start to the day and the seaside town of North Berwick has something for all the family, great restaurants, a sailing club, Puffin tours to view the birds on Bass Rock, boat tours, lovely quirky shops and gorgeous coastal walks.
For those who want to keep up their fitness regime there is a great Pulse Pilates & Fitness Studio just a mile away at Hardengreen Ind Estate.
Great Farm Fresh produce can be found at Dobbies just a mile away. Fenton Barn farm shop between Drem & Dirleton is another favourite of mine.
