If you are looking for somewhere special to stay in one of the most ruggedly beautiful areas of Tasmania look no further than Wildwood Retreat!
Wildwood Retreat is a spacious fully self contained one bed, two storey apartment that offers city comfort in a stunning and secluded rural setting.
The retreat enjoys beautiful views over rolling pasture towards Norfolk Bay with mountain backdrop in the distance - a 'perfect-picture-box-scene' where the light and mood changes constantly!
Wildwood lies in its own private kingdom of 100 acres surrounded by pristine native Eucalypt forest that includes rare habitat for the critically endangered Swift Parrot. The retreat is clad in sustainably sourced Spotted Gum and enjoys a 7 star energy rating.
Koonya lies at the heart of the official tourist route and is ideally located to access all of the area's tourist attractions.
The retreat adjoins Wildwood (our home) BUT the retreat is fully self contained with its own private driveway, garden area and entry, so that guests can come and go as they please. Screens have been discreetly placed to provide additional privacy. As owners - and regular travellers ourselves - we highly value our guests privacy and do not encroach upon it, though if guests wish to say hello, they are always welcome!
The retreat is extremely spacious, featuring large rooms, high ceilings in the upper level and is filled with natural light.
There is a European Kingsize Bed in the bedroom. The contemporary ensuite boasts a free standing bath, a separate walk in shower and a bespoke floating vanity. Quality towels, handmade soap, a hairdryer and robes are also provided, as well as beach towels.
The bathroom also has bi-fold windows so that guests can enjoy an indoor/outdoor bathing experience.
There is a beautiful modern stainless steel and timber spiral staircase in the retreat lobby/entry area that leads guests up to the contemporary open plan living/kitchen/dining area on the second level that enjoys a spectacular view through floor to ceiling glass windows. Guests will feel as if they are literally floating amongst the tree tops - a perfect place to relax, de-stress and to watch the myriad of wlldlife on the property and the wild weather roll in!
The kitchen has composite stone bench tops and quality stainless steel appliances, including a Smeg Oven and cooktop, a coffee machine, fridge/freezer, microwave and small Bosch dishwasher.
The kitchen is well equipped generally and the pantry offers a generous supply of pantry basics, including freshly ground coffee, a selection of gourmet teas, olive oil, sugar as well as a selection of herbs and spices.
Original and limited edition art works also feature at the property from Australian artists.
There is NO laundry at the retreat however, guests can arrange this with us subject to availability (we unfortunately cannot guarantee this always, particularly if we are away).
Prolific bird and wildlife can be viewed directly from the property.
PROVISIONS
Guests are invited to bring their own provisions as the property has its own fully equipped kitchen (we do as mentioned however provide some pantry basics such as herbs, oil, sugar, coffee, teas and a selection of sauces plus a few other random extras other guests occasionally leave behind - please check sell by dates!).
ACCESS
Unfortunatley, the retreat is not suitable for people with wheelchairs or with mobility issues, we are so sorry. The retreat has a spiral staircase and though the area immediately around the property is relatively flat, beyond the garden area the land is steep, the ground uneven, there is an open dam, unfenced stone terraces as well as rustic stone steps to negotiate.
THINGS TO DO ….
Wildwood Retreat is situated in a pretty rural location. Koonya lies on the Port Arthur Tourist route and is about a 10-15 minute drive to both Port Arthur and Eagle Hawk Neck and local facilities in Nubeena. Koonya is central to accessing ALL activities and facilities.
Many tourists choose to just do a day tour to Port Arthur Historic Site and they miss out hugely for there are many wonderful things to do here on the Tasman Peninsula. Here are some of my suggestions:
1. Visit Port Arthur Historic Site (perhaps even a ghost tour!)
2. Visit the Coal Mines Historic Site at Saltwater River … its much smaller than Port Arthur but is also interesting and free and is in a beautiful location!
3. Take an award winning boat trip with Pennicott Wilderness Tours that explores the coast from Eaglehawk Neck to Tasman Island: see seal colonies, giant kelp forests, whales (in season), albatross, sea eagles, the famous Totem Pole and the highest cliffs in the southern hemisphere.
4. Visit Port Arthur Lavender: browse the gift shop, then have a spot of lunch whilst enjoying stunning views of the inlet
5. Take a class at or visit the award-winning Mchenry Distillery at Port Arthur. Gin lovers can also enjoy a tasting at the new Impressions Bay Distillery at Premaydena only a 3 - 4 minute drive away.
6. Enjoy a wine tasting and cheese platter at Premaydena Hill Vineyard on top of the world, a mere 5 min drive away.
7.. Enjoy lunch at the On the Bay restaurant at Stewarts Bay Lodge in Port Arthur, OR an evening meal at 1830 at Port Arthur Historic Site.
7. Explore Pirates Bay and other sites at Eaglehawk Neck including the rare geological formation of the Tesselated pavements, the convict 'Dog Line' and Officers quarters museum. Drive through the quirky doo town on your way to see the Devils Arch, Waterfall look out and the Blow Hole or enjoy some of the best fish and chips in Tasmania at "Doolishus".
8. Explore Tasman National Park - including the beautiful Fortescue Bay a large section of the Three Capes Walking Track offering sensational walks and views and its possible to do two capes in free day walks.
9. Explore the many coves, walks and beaches on the peninsula including Safety Cove, Remarkable Caves (the remarkable Cave walk to Crescent Bay is also splendid with stunning views), Stewarts Bay, Lime Bay, Pirates Bay and Sloping Main.
10. Enjoy some deep sea fishing or diving amongst the giant sea kelp forests
11. Para glide from the aerie at EagleHawk Neck - where many visitors and locals have seen (subject to the right conditions) the southern lights
12. Just sit back, relax and de-stress with a glass of wine whilst enjoying the stunning views from the property with some local oysters - bliss!
LOCATION
Wildwood Retreat is in Koonya on the Tasman Peninsula in South East Tasmania, approximately one hour from Hobart airport and one hour and twenty minutes SE of Hobart.
The Tasman Peninsula is one of the most beautiful and rugged areas of Tasmania - with the highest sea cliffs in the southern hemisphere. It is considered a remote rural location however certainly not remote by Western Australia or Northern Territory standards!
There is a doctor surgery in Nubeena and a Chemist. There are two small IGA supermarkets in the area, one in Nubeena and the other at White Beach, both within 9-11 km's of the property. The Preymadena store is 7km's away.

About the host
Hosted by Janice Sutton

In 2006 myself and my husband Paul visited Tasmania for the first time as tourists from Western Australia and were besotted. Four years later we finally moved to Tasmania - lock, stock and barrel - the best decision we ever made! We feel so incredibly blessed to live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. So much so, we felt that we should share this beautiful place and space with others. Paul is a retired risk and safety consultant and a passionate brewer and bush walker. I am an internationally award-winning author and publisher of cookbooks! If you run out of or need a particular ingredient just shout out, I am bound to have it somewhere!!!
