Torokiki bach - a place to rejuvenate

Welcome to our little slice of paradise - Torokiki - set in the foothills of the Torlesse Tussocklands between the Kowai Bush and Lord's Bush reserves, near Springfield.

Torokiki (meaning to sprout afresh, re-establish, regrow) is the perfect place to wind down, read a book, walk through the bush reserves, or explore the wider area. The Waimakariri River, Mt Oxford, ski fields and walking and MTB tracks are all close by, while central Christchurch is only an hour away.

At the bach you'll find super-comfortable beds, a well equipped kitchen with complimentary tea and plunger coffee, gas hob and outdoor pizza oven, wood burner. well-stocked bookshelves.

There's a TV with DVD player with some old favourites to watch, or play one of the many board games available. There's no wifi available so bring your smartphone for internet access - One NZ and Spark coverage is reasonable.

The bach, sleeping up to 8 in 2 doubles and 4 single bunk beds, is a separate, private wing attached to the main house, with the owners who are very quiet and private.

We absolutely loved our stay at Torokiki Bach. Catherine and Jeremy were wonderfully welcoming hosts and very helpful. The Bach is lovely, the layout was perfect for our extended family group. Lovely and warm with everything we needed. The location was very peaceful and the bush walk up the road was a good wee activity on a non skiing day. The kids loved seeing the trains pass by a few times each day. We couldn’t recommend Torokiki Bach more highly. Thank you so much Catherine and Jeremy for sharing your slice of paradise with us.

Awesome piece of paradise.

Beautiful house which suited us perfectly. Only minutes from Springgield but felt a world away. Native bush walk (Kowai Bush) a stones throw away. Great outdoor areas overlooking the train line. Waves from people on the Fresh banana brad on arrival enjoyed on a trek the next day. Thank you!

Lovely!

A beautiful and well-maintained space. Fabulous layout for two semi-independent parties to be able to come together whilst having their own space. Well-equipped kitchen with HUGE oven and stove top. Lots of large, east-facing windows and doors that open onto a spacious deck and lawn so easy to basque in the early-morning sun. Great to wave to the folks on the Trans-Alpine twice each day, and to see all of the recently planted native trees in and around the property. Fantastic power shower and cast-iron bath, and easy communication with the property owners. I would not hesitate to recommend Torokiki to others.

A mountain escape only 1 hour from town!

Stayed 3 nights at Torokiki, could have stayed longer. Private, warm, and comfortable with great views and the occasional train marking time for us. A magic spot. Thanks so much Jeremy & family. Hoping to make it back with the elders in tow, now we know how easy it all is. Cooking wood fired pizzas (in a thunderstorm!) was great fun and more than accounted for our problems understanding the oven controls. Hard to fault though really, our only suggestions would be some instructions on using both indoor and outdoor ovens, and a small file of maps & brochures about surrounding walks and attractions.

Great hidden gem

Such a lovely spot to escape the city. Beautiful location and views around the property and a lovely cosy house with the fireplace filling the place with warmth. Great place for a large family or group of friends, the bedding arrangements were perfect and so comfy. Just overall a great stay and would highly recommend. Thanks so much.

Quiet Stay, Conveniently Positioned

Great property, everything we needed and served as a good base for a week between Christchurch, the Waimak River and Canterbury High Country.

Comfortable spot

We came here to enjoy the club fields, no accommodation was any closer as it was last minute but we didn’t mind as still only an hour away. The photos really do not do this place justice, it is such a cool spot. Everything you could need, warm (once the fire is roaring). Be prepared to be cold at first if you stay over winter. It’s super accommodating to families but we would stay here with just friends also. Train track is close by but does not disturb your stay and it became a highlight of our stay for our daughter.

The listing doesn't do Torokiki justice!

We loved staying at Torokiki. The bach is much larger than it looks in the photos, and more comfortable. Lovely beds and bedding, a great kitchen with excellent knives and pans (so often not the case!). We loved the fire and the heating - although it does take some time to heat up the rest of the house we didn't mind playing cards by the fire while the radiators warmed the house. Lovely showers and a huge bath. We loved hearing and seeing the trains go past - there are only a couple a day if that. Also loved seeing the full moon and sun rise. Thanks so much!

A Gem

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Torokiki. Lovely log burner was cosy and warmed the the whole bach via the radiators. Scenery was spectacular and the six of us found it relaxing and enjoyed using the pizza oven. Would thoroughly recommend this home away from home .

Clean and comfortable but with very firm beds

It was an unpleasant surprise on receiving the entry instructions to only then be told that the bach is attached to another tenanted property and right next door to the railway tracks. The tenants did keep to themselves but we did hear them through the wall of the bedroom and didn't have the same feeling of complete privacy we were looking for. Also, we were disappointed to find what looked like all fairly new beds were a soft topper layer over very firm mattresses that felt comfortable for the children but quite uncomfortable for adults who all felt very achey the next day. One adult preferred to sleep on the sofa. The house was cold the first night as the radiators in the bedrooms took several hours to get mildly warm and two bedrooms had no alternative heating, so we kept the doors open to get heat from the fire in the lounge. There was no hair dryer. Other than that though it was all good - the water pressure was great (great showers), the linen was good quality and clean, nice towels, the kitchen well appointed, the lounge comfortable, a great selection of games, books and DVD's, double glazing to keep the property warm, nice big bedrooms, a good supply of dry firewood and a very peaceful outlook from the deck (at least when trains were not going past), so four stars overall but we wont be back.

Absolutely perfect

We absolutely enjoyed staying at this bach over Easter with our kids and friends, wished we had been able to stay longer. Super comfortable and warm, quality appliances and everything well set up and organised. Stylish, homely and clean accomodation with amazing views. We’re looking forward to going back at some point. Really enjoyed our stay, was a perfect city getaway
