About this property
Charming Cabin Surrounded by Alaskan Adventures
Situated on the land our family homesteaded in 1959, this charming home is surrounded by trails, fields, woodlands, creeks, and beautiful Kachemak Bay. Savor your morning coffee and peek-a-boo views of the mountains and abundant wildlife from the cozy living room, front porch, or hammock on the lawn. It isn’t uncommon to see cranes, pheasant, spruce grouse, owls, coyote, and moose meander through the yard. Make yourself a delicious breakfast with some fresh local eggs, goats milk yogurt or cheese and produce from nearby Kackle Berry Farm. Then discover the Alaskan wilderness in the nearby Caribou Hills, Fox River Flats, and Kachemak Bay where you can easily go fishing, beachcombing, tidepooling, hiking, horseback riding, and berry picking during the summer months, or cross country skiing in the winter. If you prefer your adventure to be fueled by a little more horsepower, you are welcome to bring ATVs or snowmachines (snowmobiles to you outsiders) as there is plenty of parking. Or, if you are interested in exploring a quaint fishing town, enjoy a 30 minute drive to Homer where you will find a variety of galleries, coffee shops, restaurants, wineries, breweries, shops, museums, and visitors center. Don't miss your opportunity to visit the unique Homer Spit where you can bird watch, fish, shop for trinkets, strole the bike path and boardwalks, enjoy fresh seafood, or stop into the infamous Salty Dog Saloon. If you want to explore beyond the shore, there are a number of businesses that offer deep sea fishing, bear viewing, bird watching sea kayaking, and glacier and flight seeing tours.
At the end of your day, return to relax and recuperate in our beautifully renovated cabin. This home is just rustic enough to feel relaxed without feeling like you're roughing it. Many of the furnishings are one-of-kind custom built or up-cycled items by Trash & Treasure Creations. It has two bedrooms and one bath and will sleep up to 6 people. You will find a fully furnished eat-in kitchen, washer/dryer, internet, and because cell service is mostly unavailable in the area, there is a landline phone for local calls. All linens and towels are provided, as well as a charcoal bar-b-q for the grill master in the family.
Local businesses and attractions include AK Diamond J Ranch Wedding Venue, Alaska Homestead Peonies (offers tours by appointment and flowers by the stem in season), and Snowmads Parking (offers additional parking for ATVs and snowmachines) are just a stone's throw away. Trails End Horse Adventures and the famous Kilcher Homestead are approximately 15 minutes down the road. Fritz Creek General Store offers fuel, liquor, delicious sandwiches, pizza, desserts and fresh made artisan breads just 10 miles away. The town of Homer is approximately 30 minutes away.
Two things that are important to note is that cell reception is very limited over much of Alaska, the Kenai Peninsula, and the outlying areas of Homer where the cabin is located, and Google Maps sometimes has incorrect road names listed on their map. It's an exchange we make for the privilege of living in one of the most beautiful places on earth. There is no cell reception for several miles around or at the rental cabin or at our home and office nearby. You will likely not be able to send or receive cellular calls, SMS text messages, or e-mails from the area around cabin via cellular connection. However, there is WiFi so you WILL be able to send and receive when you're at the cabin and connected. For this reason, please print or save the driving directions, WiFi password, key lockbox code, and contact information in a place that is accessible without connection to cellular or internet access. All of the codes and contact information will be automatically sent to you prior to your arrival.

About the host
Hosted by Natasha Schade
Like many local homestead families in the area, we’ve been here for generations. Each generation of grandparents, parents, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren have grown, explored, settled, carved out livelihoods, and built their legacies side by side, neighbor helping neighbor in what is still a close knit community. My grandparents Neolan and Marybeth Morrison, homesteaded here in 1959. My dad was 8 years old at the time, and remained in his nearby home until his death in 2024. In 2010 I married into another local homestead family and live nearby with my husband. While much of the original Morrison Homestead has been subdivided and sold over the years, our family proudly holds to the inheritance grandmother and granddad provided. We look forward to passing the legacy to our children and sharing part of our history with you.
What makes this property unique
Like many homes in the area, this one was built DIY and little by little as we could afford. What is now the main bedroom began as a one room cabin that was purchased and moved from a neighbors property in 1991. Later dad gifted us with his old woodshed. Which we built skids for, moved into place with a neighbors dozer, and built another half. This became what is now the main structure. The final addition was the foyer/mudroom. The log skids are still supporting much of the structure. It’s all a little quirky, but it has served us well, kept us warm and dry, and holds so may valuable lessons and memories. We hope you will enjoy it, find it peaceful, and make a few of your own memories here.
