About this property

1890’s Mountain Lodge in the Gunks w/ AMAZING 150’ Waterfall on Private Reserve

If you are looking for a place to have a retreat, family reunion, a girls getaway, or a birthday celebration or memorable events - THE AWOSTING CLUB MOUNTAIN LODGE IS IDEAL.

Built in the 1890's as a hunting retreat, the Lodge was then turned into a Girls Scout main Lodge in the 1950's-1960's. A private residence after that, the Lodge boasts rich history within its American Chestnut walls, a wood now extinct. Decorated and added onto by the current family from the 1960's on, the Lodge is a museum of curated artifacts and a feast for the eyes. There are several levels of decks facing the valley and 2 freshwater reflection pools as well as another facing a 150' waterfall. The sound of running water abounds.

First floor: 1 small bunk room with 2 single beds and two bedrooms with queen beds all share a bathroom. 1 queen bed with en-suite bathroom is off the dining room on the first floor. This bedroom was occupied by Ralph Lauren in the 1980's when he would stay at the Lodge. Dining room with vaulted ceilings seats 8 and the Living room has another dining option for 8-10. Living Room has an 1880's fire place with reading nooks and a Grand Piano. Also a chess nook, and a quiver of classic board games. The second floor is a suite unto itself with an open concept: Queen bed, living room, fireplace and two queen size reading nooks that could also sleep an additional 2 people each. A dressing room connects to the bathroom with tub and shower.

This house is NOT for everyone. It is rustic and a unique experience. The fresh water reflection pool may have tadpoles or frogs due to the fact that there are no chemicals. The terrain around the house we call 'expert' terrain. It is uneven and requires attention. We have just added Mini Split AC/Heat units in both the falls room and the living room. There are fans in all of the bedrooms.

Groups and families of 10-12 are ideal with a max of 12. For larger groups there are additional Geo-Dome Bedrooms on the property for an extra charge available.

This house comes with a host who lives close, but not on premises. The host can grocery shop for you prior to arrival, book massages, yoga, suggest hikes and arrange for a chef to prepare dinners for an additional cost. We would love to help make your experience more enjoyable. Inquire for more info.

This lodge resides on Private Reserve land - called The Awosting Club - open to members and their guests. The 1 mile driveway requiring 4 wheel drive in winter months (or we can arrange for transport from base of mountain to the top where the Lodge is). There are several private cabins, tents and geodesic domes on the Reserve also for rent for larger groups. Unparalleled proximity to 30,000 acres of Park and Preserve land. Incredible views and surrounding nature abounds. It is a hikers and nature lovers paradise.

Hike to Awosting Lake 1.5hrs.
Hike to Gertrude's Nose 1 hr.
Hike to private Atwater Falls 25 min.
Tillson Lake 2 min away: for fishing and kayaking. (equipment not supplied and permit required for fishing)

Unique, unnecessarily expensive, and wildly disappointing
Despite the wonderful history and unique decor of the property, the overall experience, highlighted by poor interactions with the owner/caretakers, made me wish we booked elsewhere. There was next to no communication with the owner after booking and as a result we ended up paying for an extra dome and extra pet and were unaware of the snakes in the pool, complete lack of privacy and total ban of outdoor fires. Most of these items weren’t communicated until arrival and in hindsight we definitely would have booked somewhere else if we had more notice. The lack of privacy was certainly the biggest issue that was misrepresented in the listing as a caretaker checks in and does laundry unannounced in addition to keeping an eye on things, every day. They should also disclose that the pools have plenty of snakes in them in addition to the frogs that they kind of mention. Bottomline, this rental experience offers incredibly poor value for what you get. Hopefully they can make the necessary changes to improve the guest experience moving forward.

Perfect summer getaway
We had a group of adult friends at Awosting for the weekend, and it was everything we had hoped for and more! Kristen was an incredible hostess, and we enjoyed all aspects of the lodge- especially the freshwater pool, waterfall hike, and fire pit. It was clean and comfortable and absolutely beautiful. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a semi-rustic location with a big group!

About the host

Host profile image
My father purchased this property from the Girl Scouts in the late '60's - once a hunting cabin, then a Girl Scout headquarters and now a private home that has hosted many incredible guests, organizations and clubs over the years. Part of a conservation based community, the Awosting Club, on the Awosting Reserve boasts several tent platforms with geodesic domes and tents (a big upgrade from the Scout Tents!), cabins and other amenities. Incredible hiking paths surround the Lodge and are within the property as well as adjacent - with 30,000 of forever wild Park and Preserve Land are miles of carriage roads for Mountain Biking, hiking, cross country skiing and horseback riding.

Why they chose this property

One of the most unique and spectacular privately owned property in the Hudson Valley. It is comfortable and rustic at the same time. History surrounds and inspires.

What makes this property unique

Walk out for morning coffee overlooking the 150' Little Angel Falls...or SKIP the coffee and opt for a chilly dip in the freshwater olympic size swimming pool to get your inspired start. The air is rejuvenating. The water is healing. Escape and recharge.
