WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT WATAUGA LAKE AREA?
Watauga Lake is the 3rd cleanest lake in the country and surely one of the most beautiful. There are beautiful mountains surrounding it and more than half of Watauga Lake's shoreline of 105 miles lies within the Cherokee National Forest and cannot be developed. Often you can view the local Bald Eagles that soar the lake. Recreational uses include boating, fishing, jet skis, wake boarding, tubing, water-skiing, swimming, camping, etc. Fish species include Lake Trout, Rainbow Trout, Walleye, both Large Mouth and Small Mouth Bass, Crappie, Fresh Water Drum and Catfish.
You can take many day trips like hiking to favorite spots. Some local favorites are Grandfather Mountain, the Appalachian trail on Roan Mountain, and Linville Falls. If Fly Fishing interests you, the Watauga River and the South Holston Rivers are close by with world class trout fishing. We are also close to some great whitewater rafting, kayaking and tubing rivers as well. If touring a winery is of interest you will only be 11 miles from Watauga Lake Winery. Boone is the home of Appalachian State University which brings lots of fun to the area. ASU Football, concerts and local Breweries just to name a few. Another huge draw to the area is the proximity to the Bristol Motor Speedway. Everyone who likes racing loves the "Fastest Mile in Racing" which is the Food City 300.
We are located around 2200 Ft in elevation so you can expect cool mountain temps with a gentle breeze. Autumn brings beautiful fall colors with even better views. In the winter time, skiing and snow boarding are enjoyed at nearby Sugar and Beech Mountain.

The host was extremely responsive. We booked this trip the night before we left to drive to the mountains. The host knew we would arrive late into the night snd they arranged the house to have a very welcoming presence so late in the evening. The surroundings were absolutely stunning. They were in constant communication with us which was amazing throughout our stay.
Sisters trip to Bristol Speedway sept 2025. The house was perfect. We enjoyed sitting on the deck drinking coffee an planning our day. ..Thank you for a wonderful, relaxing ..visit
We stayed at this lovely two-bedroom house and enjoyed every moment of it. The house is just big enough for a group of 3-4 people, but is laid out very well that we never felt cramped. The house sits on a gorgeous property that allows a quiet stroll and the view from the deck is Tennessee-perfect. The house was clean and well-equipped, and the owners/manager were always prompt in their communication with us throughout our stay. They were very kind and helpful. The house is about 30 minutes away from Boone, NC and other bigger towns/cities in East Tennessee, so the location is a great compromise between convenience and seclusion/privacy. If you need something urgently, there is a general store within three miles, too. Overall, it was definitely a pleasant stay and I would recommend the place to anyone looking for a quiet, relaxing vacation rental surrounded by beautiful nature!
Neat place. Super secluded. Entirely quiet. At night the area is pitch black. No light pollution, no noise pollution, no cell phone service, no stores of any kind around for half hour drive .

So glad you enjoyed the peace of the country! To note- we do have great internet (the new fiber optic cables) and you can hook your phone through the internet for service. There is a little convenient store nearby (store and deli got destroyed by the hurricane) but they are building a better store and brewery close by! There is the mercantile little store and deli close by too but is best to get full grocery’s before coming!
We loved our stay at The Bird. Lots of woods and wildlife. Beautiful mountain view from the back deck! Beds were amazing, and the entire stay was a blessing! Will definitely be back
The house is just as advertised online, but the pictures don’t do it justice. Easily accesable mountain home, with beautiful views. The house was the cleanest Vrbo property I have ever stayed in. 10/10 trip.
Was overall good mini vacation. All the pans are older so a lot of the food we made burnt easily or stuck to the pan. Getting in was a little troublesome only because we didn’t have any service, luckily I remembered the code. Deck was beautiful and beds were very comfortable, bedding needs updated, felt old and worn down.
My husband and I were looking for a quiet home in nature and we found it at The Bird House. We enjoyed the fresh mountain air, trees, beautiful lake and dark nights to see the stars and lightning bug display! We spent much of our time on the deck -- and use of the canoe at the nearby boat launch was a bonus. We had all we needed in the house -- including great streaming features on the big TV. Judson was a terrific host. Nearby towns, trails and wineries were fun to explore.
We were there to visit relatives and this house was a perfect "base" for us and our kids. It's a cozy, 2 bedroom house on a small quiet road and only a half mile from a private boat launch on the lake that you can use (if you have a boat). The deck in back has a beautiful view - we loved sitting there sipping our coffee as we watched the morning mountain fog lift and burn away. The kitchen is spacious and well-equipped and there is a large laundry area with washer/dryer and a garage converted into a rec room. The host - Judson - is very responsive and attentive.
We were invited to a wedding at Sugar Hollow Retreat wedding venue last weekend. While gorgeous with breathtaking views, the gravel road and terrain to the venue is challenging - so, it was a DELIGHTFUL surprise to learn how close this home “The Bird House” was to the wedding venue, given we were coming back from the event in the dark. Being from out of town, it was so convenient finding a home less than 2 miles to Sugar Hollow. The home was CLEAN, provided hot showers, the beds were comfortable, and it offered little touches - like a long mirror for those getting ready for the wedding, a huge tv for the others watching sports, and a spacious kitchen to prepare meals if you don’t want to venture out too far to find dinner. It’s an older home with older fixtures - but we honestly loved it … it felt nostalgic. The communication was top-notch throughout our stay. Thank you for opening your home to our family.
We came to the mountains for Thanksgiving . This cabin was perfect so they came to us . Everything we needed was there to cook with . We have two dogs and the yard was so large , they loved playing outside . If you want a place that is quiet and clean , where a touch of old meets a touch of new . Then I suggest you rent it . Truly had a wonderful time .
Love the place. Comfortable, clean, beautiful, super nice! Very quite. Everything worked perfect and we had everything we needed. Great location to get to Beech mountain.
