About the host
Hosted by Jonathan
Born in the Philippines as a US citizen to an expat American father and Malaysian mother, my childhood was nomadic due to my father's profession with humanitarian aid. Places we called home included East and West Africa, India, NYC, Indonesia, and finally Thailand where I finished High School.
Subsequently my adult life was spent doing random work/study and wandering in any place that kept my fancy from Yosemite to Paris, but always based mainly in San Diego, California where my family eventually settled and currently resides.
My profession as a Private Chef on superyachts first brought me to Costa Rica in 2009 when I took a few days off the boat to surf in Santa Teresa. I immediately fell in love with the wild natural beauty of this place and after many return visits and purchasing the property in 2013, I finally settled here permanently in 2017 to build our home and live the simple life with my wife, Chantelle, who is from Cape Town, South Africa.
So after a lifetime of traveling, with gracious hosts opening their doors for me to sleep on their couches, boats, homes, backyards, and hostels, I feel that it's now my turn to return that hospitality. It's been a real pleasure to host fellow travelers exploring Costa Rica, and doing my best to make them feel comfortable and at home in their own private space. We also love hearing the stories of other people's travel, experiences and adventures. Pura Vida.

Why they chose this property
We chose to live in our location because it is surrounded by nature in a quiet peaceful and safe neighborhood with a strong sense of community. We are on the top of a ridge of hills embedded in the jungle with views of the ocean and gentle breezes from all around.
Downtown Santa Teresa has become quite busy in recent years so we appreciate living in this environment of nature and tranquility while the most beautiful beach in the area is only a quick 5 minute drive away, along with a grocery store, and a few nice restaurants.

What makes this property unique
Our property is in Santiago, an up and coming, desirable neighborhood in the hills overlooking the Santa Teresa area. Most long time residents of Santa Teresa have bought property here to be surrounded by nature and escape the growing population of town. We have also been one of the first residents to buy property in this neighborhood over 10 years ago with a large piece of land in a special and prized location. Being on the top of the ridge also brings cooler temperatures and great views, and we are only a 5 minute drive to the most beautiful beach in the area.
On the property, we have many fruit trees that frequently attract wildlife like exotic birds and monkeys, as well as a walking trail that leads through the property to a small river that has a waterfall in the rainy season located in a private and beautiful natural setting.
