About this property

Casa Khoisan Luxury Ocean View Jungle Villa

Casa Khoisan is a luxury vacation home on a 4 acre private property nestled in the jungle and overlooking the Pacific Ocean. You will enjoy the cooler hilltop temperatures up on the wide floating terrace above the forest canopy surrounded by abundant wildlife while being only a 5 minute drive from the world class surfing beach of Playa Hermosa in North Santa Teresa.
The Casita offers a full kitchen, large garden bathroom with hot water and outside rain shower, A/C, 200 Mbps high speed fiber optic internet, and secured parking.

The space:

Casa Khoisan is one of three houses located on an ocean view estate. The owners, who are the friendly and laid back hosts, Jon and Chantelle, live in one of the houses. The property is on top of the ridge of hills that over looks the area of Playa Hermosa in north Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. Playa Hermosa is well known to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the area with incredible surf for all levels from beginners to experienced surfers. The small, united and friendly community has a few nice cafes and restaurants, a surf shop with board rentals and surf instructors, and a grocery store. The drive down to the beach takes a quick 5 minutes. It is indeed walkable, around 30 minutes, but coming back, you will have to go uphill.
The property has fruit trees (mango season is from March - May in case anyone was wondering) and a walking trail that leads 200 meters downhill to the bottom of a jungle valley, where the property ends at a secluded creek. Here, there is a small waterfall and natural pool in the rainy season. If the guests opt to take this walk, they will experience a special place where they can enjoy being completely alone in the belly of the jungle and surrounded by nature.

Guest access:

Having your own transport (best to reserve well ahead of time especially in peak season) is highly recommended as the property is situated up in the residential Santiago hills. The property is located on a public road so access is well traveled and easy but as it is a dirt road and depending on the road conditions, a 4x4 or ATV is best (especially during the rainy season from May to October), a standard SUV or vehicle with high clearance is acceptable, and a sedan is most often doable, but not recommended. This is our recommendation for a vehicle anywhere in the greater Santa Teresa area. You will have a private secured gated parking space right next to the house.

About the host

Host profile image
Born in the Philippines as a US citizen to an expat American father and Malaysian mother, my childhood was nomadic due to my father's profession with humanitarian aid. Places we called home included East and West Africa, India, NYC, Indonesia, and finally Thailand where I finished High School.

Subsequently my adult life was spent doing random work/study and wandering in any place that kept my fancy from Yosemite to Paris, but always based mainly in San Diego, California where my family eventually settled and currently resides.

My profession as a Private Chef on superyachts first brought me to Costa Rica in 2009 when I took a few days off the boat to surf in Santa Teresa. I immediately fell in love with the wild natural beauty of this place and after many return visits and purchasing the property in 2013, I finally settled here permanently in 2017 to build our home and live the simple life with my wife, Chantelle, who is from Cape Town, South Africa.

So after a lifetime of traveling, with gracious hosts opening their doors for me to sleep on their couches, boats, homes, backyards, and hostels, I feel that it's now my turn to return that hospitality. It's been a real pleasure to host fellow travelers exploring Costa Rica, and doing my best to make them feel comfortable and at home in their own private space. We also love hearing the stories of other people's travel, experiences and adventures. Pura Vida.

Why they chose this property

We chose to live in our location because it is surrounded by nature in a quiet peaceful and safe neighborhood with a strong sense of community. We are on the top of a ridge of hills embedded in the jungle with views of the ocean and gentle breezes from all around.
Downtown Santa Teresa has become quite busy in recent years so we appreciate living in this environment of nature and tranquility while the most beautiful beach in the area is only a quick 5 minute drive away, along with a grocery store, and a few nice restaurants.

What makes this property unique

Our property is in Santiago, an up and coming, desirable neighborhood in the hills overlooking the Santa Teresa area. Most long time residents of Santa Teresa have bought property here to be surrounded by nature and escape the growing population of town. We have also been one of the first residents to buy property in this neighborhood over 10 years ago with a large piece of land in a special and prized location. Being on the top of the ridge also brings cooler temperatures and great views, and we are only a 5 minute drive to the most beautiful beach in the area.
On the property, we have many fruit trees that frequently attract wildlife like exotic birds and monkeys, as well as a walking trail that leads through the property to a small river that has a waterfall in the rainy season located in a private and beautiful natural setting.
