There's a moment right after you step outside onto the deck here — coffee in hand, salt air coming off the Sound, an eagle riding a thermal above the tree line — where whatever you were stressed about genuinely stops mattering. That's The Whale's Tale.
Sitting above Henderson Bay on Puget Sound, this 3,400 sq ft waterfront home was designed for people who want space — space to gather, space to be quiet, and space to actually look up from their phones. Mt. Rainier anchors the view to the east. Raft Island sits just offshore. On a clear morning, the reflection off the water is almost unreasonable.
What You'll See From the Deck Bald eagles are daily visitors — not an occasional sighting, a daily one. Harbor seals and harbor porpoises make regular appearances in the bay. Orca sightings happen multiple times a year. If you've ever wanted that classic Pacific Northwest wildlife experience without driving to a trailhead, this is it.
The House Four bedrooms sleep nine comfortably — two king suites, one queen bedroom, and a private office with a queen sleeper sofa. Three full bathrooms and a half bath mean no one's waiting. The open living area has hardwood floors, oversized windows facing the water, a cozy window bay seat, and an electric fireplace. Real beds, real privacy, no air mattresses.
The Kitchen A large island, induction cooktop, and granite counters make this a kitchen you'll actually want to cook in. Stocked for real meals — not just coffee and takeout containers, though we have those covered too.
The Coffee Setup (Yes, We Take This Seriously) A fully equipped espresso machine with QR code instructions, single-serve brewer, French press, Vietnamese phin filter, and pour-over kit. Every brewing method is here. There's no excuse for a bad cup of coffee.
Outside The deck and balcony look out over a lush cottage garden — Japanese maples, climbing hydrangea, hostas — and down to the bay. A pergola with outdoor dining seats the whole group. The fire pit with Adirondack chairs is where evenings tend to end up. The property's private neighborhood beach access is about a 5-minute walk.
Right Down the Road Minterbrook Oyster Co. is less than a mile away — fresh oysters, crab, mussels, clams, bought direct. Minter Creek Hatchery is a low-key nature stop worth the five-minute drive. Downtown Gig Harbor has restaurants, shops, a distillery, harbor tours, and ice cream. It's the kind of downtown that feels like a real place, not a tourist trap.
Location About an hour from Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, and the trailheads of Olympic National Forest. Close enough to everything, far enough away to actually feel like a vacation.
A Note on Beach Access The property sits above its own private beach on Puget Sound — the property staircase is currently undergoing permitted reconstruction (expected completion late 2026). In the meantime, the neighborhood beach access point is a pleasant 5-minute walk and fully accessible. 80 feet of bluff means the views are spectacular in either direction.
Good to Know This home has multiple levels and quite a few stairs — it's not the right fit for guests with significant mobility limitations. There are two owners-only closets and some locked laundry cabinets; everything else is yours for the stay.

Dreamy COMFY waterfront retreat
This is a beautiful waterfront property that is extremely comfortable and well-appointed. The house literally has everything you could need. We slept well, had a firepit once night, and used the grill. We took a long walk on the private stone beach. There are instructions for everything and everything works and looks beautiful. We stayed here to be near our family nearby for a wedding. The host was very nice and accommodating.

Amazing Vacation & Stunning Views
Our party of 6 had an amazing stay at The Whale’s Tale. The back yard is spectacular and the deck provides stunning views of Henderson Bay and Mt Rainier. The house itself was a perfect fit for us - super clean and well appointed, great kitchen for cooking, enough comfy space for 6 guests, gas grill, laundry. We enjoyed down time relaxing at the house and were close enough for day trips to Seattle, Mt Rainier and a trip to the San Juan islands.
Our hosts couldn’t be more accessible!! Lauren responded to my many questions pre-booking and during our stay. Our family would highly recommend a stay at The Whale’s Tale.

We will be back!
We loved this home. It didn’t feel like a rental at all. The house was beautiful and the views of Henderson Bay and Mt Ranier were unbelievable. Easy walk to the beach and so lovely to walk near the bay. The kitchen fully equipped as well as the rest of the house. But my favorite part was the gardens! Oh my, the hydrangeas were unbelievable! It was obvious that the owners took care of the grounds. We enjoyed the fire pit and the outdoor furniture-including the hammock and swinging rope chair. Hosts were easy to connect with and walked me through a few things I couldn’t figure out. I have never been to a rental home with houseplants. Lots of attention to detail Thank you for sharing your home with us!

About Shoreside Sanctuaries:
After years of working corporate jobs in the city, where we rarely had time to truly enjoy family, friends, or life, we decided to uproot our lives and embark on a new adventure in the Pacific Northwest. While we bounced around before landing, we were determined to find a sanctuary—a place where, regardless of our jobs or the stresses of life, we could find relief and peace as soon as we walked through the door. That place became The Whale's Tale.
Living in this beautiful shoreside sanctuary inspired us to purchase another waterfront property, which we now share with family, friends, and guests like you. Although we still have jobs outside of our vacation rentals, Shoreside Sanctuaries is our passion. We love creating spaces where people can gather, relax, heal, and create lasting memories OR their own "Whale of a Tale" if you will. I know some of you were thinking we just misspelt that. ;)
We hope you experience the same sense of peace that we do here and invite you to visit our other property in Westport, WA as well. If anything is amiss during your stay, please let us know immediately so we can make it right. Come see us—we think you'll love it here.
Why they chose this property
Because there aren't many places where you can watch a bald eagle hunt from the same deck where you're drinking your morning espresso. The Whale's Tale is one of them. It's twenty minutes from grocery stores and downtown Gig Harbor, but the second you step outside, you're in the kind of Pacific Northwest quiet that people drive hours to find. The water, the pines, the birds, the smell of salt air — it arrives immediately. Inside, everything is clean, modern, and stocked the way you'd want your own home stocked. The bar setup is genuinely on point. The coffee situation is embarrassingly good. And the view of Mt. Rainier on a clear day is the kind of thing that makes you stop mid-conversation just to look at it.
What makes this property unique
Daily bald eagle sightings, frequent orca and harbor seal visits, Mt. Rainier views, deeded beach on Puget Sound, premium espresso setup, chef's kitchen, pergola dining, and a fire pit overlooking Henderson Bay. Less than a mile from Minterbrook Oyster Co. An hour from Seattle.
