We are sparkling clean, wi-fi equipped, and well-behaved dog-friendly . Enjoy the beautiful Big Lake from your panoramic beach or from the deck overlooking it. This cozy retreat is just a short drive east from Grand Marais near Judge Magney State Park. Gorgeous in any season, this home sparkles from Spring to Fall with a variety of stunning flowers and foliage. Enjoy a peaceful, soul-renewing stay among the graceful northern pines, beautiful changing colors, soaring eagles and a sky full of stars. 2 bedroom, 1 bath for 4 (possibly 5) guests . Lovely lake home with a great deck and an amazing screened in porch. It was nice and private—outside the busyness of town but close enough to easily visit. Well-appointed kitchen and comfortable bedrooms. Enjoyed walking along the beach and watching the birds. Looking forward to returning next year!

A Perfect Getaway

Beautiful place with plenty of room and a stunning sun room. The adjacent pebble beach is extraordinary and perfect for walks. Amazing views for relaxation and just a short drive into Grand Marais for shops and restaurants.

We’ve been coming up to the Grand Marais area for over 50 years and stayed at too many different places to list. I would have to say 12 mile Rock is one of the best if not the best places we’ve ever stayed. Its location is perfect a quick 12 minute drive from Grand Marais, but the real prize is its location right on Lake superior. It’s on an incredibly beautiful agate beach. It abuts 2 miles of the superior hiking trail right along Lake Superior so you have plenty of space to roam and enjoy an incredible serene view.The home is a very nicely updated, extremely cozy and has one of the most incredible decks and four season porches possible. Also, the entire yard between the home and the lake is literally loaded with every type of native wildflower of the area. It truly is breathtaking.Whether you want serenity, a perfectly located base to hike from, an incredible spot to kayak from or just a beautiful beach to enjoy. You’ll find no finer property on the North Shore.Thank you Mary for such an enjoyable two weeks. We will be back and we’ve already told our friends about your place.

The property is beautiful and the stretch of the Lake Superior shoreline takes your breathe away! Our beagle had a joyful time running on the beach. We had a wonderful time relaxing on the deck and in the sunroom. So quiet and peaceful.....we booked again for the same time next year! Late September into early October.

Peaceful haven

It was a wonderful and comfortable home. We loved being on Lake Superior and being able to walk on the gorgeous beach. It was very serene, and the only sound was the lapping of the waves. We really appreciated that this lovely home was pet-friendly.

SOUL SOOTHING

Fantastic location; very good hosts

My husband, dog and I had a wonderful week at this home 12 miles north of Grand Marais, MN. Lake Superior is about 40 yards from the huge deck; there is a lot of privacy; the kitchen is very well equipped. Not a fancy interior but everything you need. I also appreciate how good the lighting is inside: lots of lamps and overhead lighting for reading, playing cards, etc. Hosts were great to work with and very clear instructions. Highly recommend!

Unplug and Relax

If you are looking for a place away from crowds and people this is your spot. Beautiful view of the lake with your own private rock beach. We spent hours on the beach and rarely saw another person. It was heaven. We had a great fire on the beach under the amazing starlight which we cannot see back home because of the lights from the city. Huge deck to relax and listen to the waves. This was our second time staying here and we look forward to coming back again. The host was very accommodating and made check in and check out easy and convenient.

Truly Paradise

Twelve Mile Rock is a magical place. The home was beautiful and the setting…perfection. Make sure to spend most of your time in the newly built 3 season porch. The view of the lake and the sound of the waves combine to relax your muscles and free your mind. I love the kitsch of the 1972 National Geographic magazines on the bookshelf…contrasted with the Bose sound system! Great care was taken to outfit the kitchen with everything you could imagine. The hosts were great and communicated proactively. I can’t wait to book my next visit!!

Fantastic!

This past June was our third time staying at the Cottage on the Big Lake and we look forward to coming again. It's everything you could want and more if you are looking for a cottage on Lake Superior that's in a great location, excellently equipped with everything you need (no TV, which is very nice), has a great beach for walking and collecting rocks and is convenient to Grand Marais (think shopping, good food, and the world's best donuts), waterfalls and parks. The owners seem to have thought of everything, even leaving coats in a closet for guests unprepared for a cool morning. During our visit deer walked across the yard, eagles soared overhead, hummingbirds fed at a feeder on the deck, and fox barked us awake one morning. My wife and I are eager to return.

All Good - as listed and portrayed

Property was ready to go, check in via remote lockbox code was easy. Quiet days, wonderful nights with stars, and some real cold water. Kayaking was great. Bugs were livable. Flies kept at bay onshore with a good breeze. Good grocery selection at the IGA and COOP in Grnad Marais. My own personal preference is for gas grills vs charcoal, at VRBO rentals, primarily due to simplicity. The charcoal grill works great, but for 2 people, on the 2nd night, I went to the stove sautee for the shrimp. Owner was very attentive on making sure everything worked. Place was well equipped and very comfortable. We'll be back next year.

Great Getaway!

We had a great time! We got quick responses to our questions while planning. The home was clean and comfortable and the view could not have been better. We brought our two dogs who loved running around. The quiet stretch of pebble beach along Superior was beautiful, a little challenging for the dogs paws but it only slightly slowed them down. We hiked to the Pincushion Mountains and along the Superior Hiking Trail. In Grand Marais, we rented a canoe and paddled around Two Island Lake a little ways up the Gun Flint Trail. We also tried to paddle Superior but those waves can get a little dicey at times! A great place if you want to travel with your dogs! There were crates available for when we went out to eat in Grand Marais, and plenty of room for them to run on a very quiet 1/4 mile stretch of beach (we didnt see anyone while there). It was a nice getaway and hope to return someday.

Truly Amazing!

We arrived on a rainy night - so we were thrilled to be greeted by such a cozy cabin - and in such a great location! We kayaked, hiked, ate delicious cinnamon rolls from just down the road, walked the beach - and even better - had campfires on the beach under the full moon! Mary provided great information before check in so we knew to bring our own spices, charcoal and firewood. (Thanks for that, Mary!) The cabin had everything else we needed (and then some)! Some of the gadgets harkened back to my childhood, they were fun to see! The weather was nice and cool, and sunny most days! We had an amazing time and hope to be back!

The perfect MN North Shore retreat on the big water

This would be splendid for a family with kids, or two couples. But even for a couple with two dogs instead--and at the cooler start of summer in early June--it was wonderful. More than a mile of public beach to explore, with a bit of Superior Hiking Trail (all of it a dog's favorite, too!). And plenty of light-filled space inside facing the lake during the day. I've never taken so many pictures of the views, day and night when the moon is up. If you come for swimming, hiking and plain relaxing more than just touring Grand Marais, Twelve Mile Rock should be on your shortlist of places to consider. And I never appreciated early June up north more than when we finally returned to the Twin Cities heat at end of our week's stay!

Wow!!

Upon arrival we walked straight to the lake side of the house. The waves were crashing into the shore. All you saw was water and beach. It was breathtaking. Exactly what we needed after 18+ months of being cooped up due to the pandemic. We thoroughly enjoyed the house, the property, the things to do. I hope to go back in the future. Thanks Steels for a wonderful getaway.

Peace & Serenity

I could have not asked for a better place to get away from it all and relax and recharge. The house is great! The deck offered a place of complete peace and serenity listening to the sounds of nature and a beautiful view of the lake. Long walks down the beautiful rock beach with the dogs and rarely seeing another person was beyond amazing. Check in was easy. The owners were available and very gracious. I can’t thank them enough for sharing their slice of heaven.

Exceptional location

We enjoyed a restful, rejuvenating week at Twelve Mile Rock. The house is comfortable and has everything needed, including books about the North Shore. There is plenty to do in the area, but sometimes the beach and water and sky are enough. The long stretch of beach to the west is remarkable!
