About this property
The Lighthouse. unique lodging overlooking the harbor. Sauna special!
The 'Lighthouse' is a special lodging overlooking the town and harbor of Grand Marais from its center. You are right in the heart of town within a block of everything- yet comfortably removed when you need a breather. You can sit up in bed and view the harbor and the big lake beyond. If you would like to access the sauna please contact the owners in advance or book it yourself on our website and set up a reservation- it is an add on expense and is first come first serve. Total is $49 per night plus tax and it is booked on our direct site. November and April have sauna specials- please go to the sauna listing to see those. At the Lighthouse there is covered parking that leads to a stairway that takes you up to the Lighthouse. The view of the old harbor from the balcony is stunning. There is a wrought iron table and chairs on the balcony for relaxing. Inside the Lighthouse you will find a queen bed, tile shower and bathroom, galley kitchen, custom dining table for two, LCD TV (please bring your own streaming codes, there is no cable or area broadcast content). The bed is set at an angle and faces southeast to capture the views of the harbor in the morning through large windows. Many of our guests yearn for a connection with nature, the lake, the community, a reconnection with each other, and permission to come to a full stop for deep rest. There are transom windows around the perimeter of the apartment that let in light from all points on the compass but do not compromise privacy. Eye masks are provided for those that want to sleep in :-). Notice how the light changes as the day progresses. Observe the color differences around sunset or early in the morning as the Great Lake passes through its moods. The ceiling is very high and is vaulted and timberframed with unique 'Dragon Beams' from local timberframe artisans. Topping the lighthouse is an octagonal lighthouse cupola that lets light in all day and moonlight at night and contains a genuine ships lantern that you can switch on from the bed. And on top of the cuppola is a custom copper ball, in keeping with the lighthouses of the North Shore. The antique ship's light that occupies the cuppola can guide you as you walk home after a night of festivities in the town. There is an all cedar Finnish Sauna next door to the Lighthouse for your exclusive use for an additional fee. Usage comes with robes and additional towels and complete instructions. Simply state you would like to add the Sauna to the notes of your stay when you make your reservation and we will contact you with details and availability. If sauna availability is important to make your decision to stay with us then please message us before you make your reservation so we can see if it is available during your stay. Watch the fog roll in and out from your bed while you drink your morning coffee, and listen to the strains of local live music as the town celebrates the short summers at night. The gally kitchen is small but thoroughly modern with all the necessities. The Lighthouse is above the 'North Shore Fisherman's Cabin', a restored historic log home. The Lighthouse is known for its inspiring charm. There have been plays and musicals written here, a fair number of proposals, and a good number of honeymoons. Come share the fantastic energy that is The Lighthouse.

About the host
Hosted by Todd and Susan Miller
The owners and managers of the Lighthouse are Todd and Susan Miller. Susan is originally from Duluth Mn and Todd from the Twin Cities. They have sailed the world's oceans together on their 35 foot sloop 'Snow Day', and have now settled down here in Grand Marais since 2003. Todd is a licensed Captain, and served on the local park board for many years and currently serves on the Planning and Zoning board. He is also active in community projects with area youth and founded the Grand Marais Music Collaborative, a 501 3c non profit benefiting area youth and musicians. Susan is the Special Education teacher at the local charter school. Todd's interests include leading a local dance band, building and restoring fun things, messing about in boats, and managing Real Estate. Susans interests include gardening, thrift store exploring, and cooking. They both love to travel and learn.
Why they chose this property
We chose this location because it is very special. We are lifelong Miinnesotans and have been passing through Grand Marais our whole lives. We wanted a home on the North Shore, and we believe that Grand Marais is the jewel of the North Shore. Within Grand Marais we wanted to be close to the action and the water. Although this is a very small town, it has big shoulders when it comes to culture and beauty. We belive our specific location is magical because the big lake cools us in summer and warms us in winter. We can walk to everything. We never get tired of the many moods of Lake Superior and enjoy watching the lake from this property.
What makes this property unique
Travel insurance- a more popular option than ever before in these uncertain times! If booking direct you are saving roughly 12-15%. Travel insurance costs between 7 and 9.8%. You can still come out ahead and be fully insured. Or, if. you are confident (and we really hope you are) just pocket the savings and treat your group to a good dinner when you get here. But please don't just book some dates and then cancel and assume there will be a refund- you must make the correct decisions now that suit your comfort level.
Please let us know of your full agreement with these terms and we will go ahead and approve your booking. Thanks so much! Todd and Susan
