2.5 Whidbey Island Acres: Hot Tub, Trails, Game & Cinema Studio, Chef’s Kitchen
Welcome to the south end of Whidbey Island, Washington. Locals call it "the shortest distance to far away." And, there's no better place to experience the charm of south Whidbey than the Owl House near Freeland--2.5 acres of secluded island bliss.
THE GROUNDS
On arrival, you will be welcomed home by a long poplar-lined country driveway leading you to the well-set-back main house. Once settled in, explore the private trail system and find the hidden footbridge to a small "island on the island" in the seasonal pond. At night, 1,000 feet of remote-controlled LED lights turn the Owl House and its surroundings to magic.
After wandering the grounds, soak in the outdoor hot tub under the tree canopy or gather at the flagstone patio to roast s’mores by the fire (firewood provided).
In the morning, choose your coffee and your brewing method at the coffee bar and venture out onto the huge covered porch, equipped with family outdoor seating, hammocks, and a large gas grill for dinner later (maybe fresh-caught salmon?). Depending on the month of your visit, feel free to pick your own fresh apples, cherries, or berries.
THE GAME AND CINEMA STUDIO
A short walk across the yard brings you to the climate-controlled detached studio. This separate entertainment hub allows one group to enjoy a movie or a game of ping-pong without disturbing the quiet of the main house.
When in the studio, sink into power recliners for movie night with a projector, a library of several dozen DVDs, and a mini-fridge. Behind the movie area you can challenge your family to games of foosball and ping pong, or open the large garage door to expand the fun into the yard with cornhole, croquet, or Giant Yahtzee.
THE MAIN HOUSE
The interior of the 1,600 square foot three bedroom, two bath main house features an open-concept layout with soaring lofted wood ceilings and skylights. Start your morning in the kitchen, viewing the orchard and forest through a wall of windows with coffee in hand.
The gourmet kitchen is equipped for those who love to cook, featuring a dedicated coffee station with multiple brewing styles, plus an ice cream maker, rice cooker, crock pot, air fryer, and Ninja blender.
Relax in the super comfortable living area with a 55-inch Smart TV and electric heated fireplace. If you prefer to unplug, browse the "take a book, leave a book" library or consult our local coffee table guidebooks to plan your next island excursion.

About the host
Hosted by Doug Geiling
My name is Doug and I am from Colorado, but love to spend time in my second state of Washington where I previously lived full time for nearly a decade.
Why they chose this property
There is something unique and special about Pacific Northwest Island life, and Whidbey Island in particular with its special blend of Pacific Northwest culture and rural ruggedness, bracketed on two sides by the mountains of the Olympics and the Cascades with the saltwater of the Salish Sea in between.
What makes this property unique
The house is wonderful, but what makes the Owl House really special is the setting with its long poplar-lined driveway, seasonal pond, little fruit orchard, and large yard bordered in the back by a forest of cedars and red alders. When the owls arrive at dusk (and they usually do) and call out from the forest, it turns this unique place into a magical one. In the spring life explodes here as the frogs sing and the many flowers bloom including several large rhododendron bushes. The huge covered front porch with hammocks, grill, and outdoor seating makes for a wonderful indoor/outdoor guest experience. And the final touches that really set the Owl House apart are two distinct sanctuaries. First is the outdoor hot tub and adjacent flagstone patio with fire pit under an expansive tree canopy (future plans to add a sauna here). Second is the 600 square foot detached studio that is set up as a combination movie cinema (with projector, DVD movie selection, and power reclining theater chairs), and game area with ping pong and foosball for the family.
