About this property
Bar Harbor Panoramic Oceanfront for Your Whole Family! Kids and Dogs Love It!
Rising Sun Cottage is located right in Bar Harbor and features six beautiful bedrooms and spectacular ocean views, making it the perfect choice for large families up to 12 people. Our guests are often enjoying a multi-generational vacation together, and the spacious living room with its two decks allows everyone to gather around to talk, enjoy their meals, and share stories and pictures, all while soaking in the breathtaking sight of the open ocean.
Nestled at the end of a quiet private road, Rising Sun offers truly exceptional tranquility and convenience, creating a private retreat for everyone while being just minutes away from the entrance to Acadia National Park. Families can also easily enjoy all of the dining and shopping experiences for which the Village of Bar Harbor is famous, because it's just a five-minute drive to the center of town from the house!
With its perfect blend of comfort and stunning scenery, Rising Sun Cottage is designed to create unforgettable family moments. Whether you're enjoying a sunset from one of the decks or gathered together in the living room, Rising Sun promises an extraordinary stay for all generations.
Before we built Rising Sun Cottage in 2014, we stayed in many other parts of Mount Desert Island. When we stayed in Southwest Harbor or other areas on the western side of the island, we found the drive back and forth to Bar Harbor to be tiresome. Round trip, it’s over an hour, and at night the drive wasn’t relaxing.
When we stayed in Bar Harbor itself, we were often surprised by the lack of privacy and peacefulness. This is why we built Rising Sun where we did.
Located at the end of a beautiful private road right off of Main Street, Rising Sun finally gave us the incredible combination of great privacy and very close proximity to the Village of Bar Harbor that we'd been looking for during all of our other vacations.
If you or your family loves to cook, you'll love our kitchen and pantry. We provide a complete array of herbs, spices, sugars, salts, peppers, and flour for your family to enjoy, as well as a wide selection of sharp knives, pots, pans, and cooking and baking equipment. There’s an incredible amount of stainless-steel prep space, two large sinks, a powerful exhaust hood over the stove, and stunning ocean views to take in while you cook!
At night, under the star-filled skies, a short walk along our quiet and private road is relaxing and delightful. Trees line the road on both sides, except for an occasional driveway. It's as beautiful as any carriage road in Acadia, but it's just you on an evening stroll. The night sky is largely free of light pollution, so you'll find the stars exceptionally bright and truly amazing. And the peaceful solitude on the road is equally so.
If you're an early riser, the morning dew, the cool ocean air, and possibly one of the fox family who lives in the woods nearby will share your walk. We often continue our walk to include the National Park Trail that's just a mile from the house -- all on the private road -- which leads to Compass Harbor and its spectacular views of the Porcupine Islands.
If there's a storm during your family's stay, our whole house emergency generator offers great peace of mind. The power supply in Bar Harbor and on Mount Desert Island isn't always the most dependable, and even if the electricity is off for just a few hours during your family’s vacation, losing the lights, showers, water, toilets, refrigeration, and air conditioning isn’t fun. If the outage lasts a day or more, it will really put a damper on your vacation. But not at Rising Sun! We made sure our generator is the largest residential generator on the market, so it will easily power the whole house, including our central air conditioning.
One of the goals in building Rising Sun was that our guests could enjoy the most relaxing, peaceful, and nature-appreciating vacation ever, even if they were to never leave the property. And if you were to explore Acadia National Park to the fullest every day, coming back to Rising Sun in the evening to cocktails, dinner, and the hot tub, you would have your most invigorating, exciting, and nature-appreciating vacation ever.
We hope that you and your family will come and enjoy a week or two of Bar Harbor paradise at Rising Sun Cottage. If you have dogs, please bring them. They'll love Rising Sun, Bar Harbor, and Acadia National Park!

Wonderful location right next to the park. The property was beautiful, the house was comfortable, and the owners were so considerate, supplying pretty much anything you might need.
We had a wonderful week! Rising Sun Cottage was beautifully decorated and well appointed with every amenity we could have wanted. Excellent location, close to town and Acadia. Owner was extremely helpful, offering wonderful restaurant recommendations and helpful tips for visiting various trails and lakes.
Rising Sun was a lovely property in the perfect location. Our family of 7 (and dog!) loved having plenty of space and being able to quickly get everywhere we wanted to go. Management was very proactive and responsive and made the whole process seamless. Definitely recommend for a large group!
Couldn't draw up a better house, location, or host for a week long large family trip to Acadia and bar Harbor (with our dogs)
Can't recommend highly enough
Our extended family of 10 loved the Rising Sun Cottage and were very comfortable there for our week over 4th of July! Location is perfect by being right outside of Bar Harbor and right on the ocean. Everyone had enough space to chill and the community room was great for meals and games in the evenings.
Family get together- very comfortable, clean, and spacious house in a beautiful setting. Conveniently located minutes from Bar Harbor. Stunning views. Responsive and helpful property management.
We had an incredibly wonderful time at Rising Sun! Lovely views, spacious comfortable house with room for everyone, well equipped kitchen and responsive owners. Highly recommend!
The property is beautiful. It is as is described. Both Ned and Nick were hugely helpful...restaurants, activities, Nick went above and beyond, saving my wife's and my 84 year old bodies by carrying our luggage in when we arrived before everyone else. The kitchen is particularly well equipped. The living room provided an outstanding venue for endless conversation and charades. And, the property simply could not be better situated for seclusion as well as access to town and to Acadia. We had a delightful week.
The property is beautiful. Home was beautiful and well-stocked. The path down to the shore was a bit steep for the older folks in our group but the shoreline was gorgeous. And I happened to spot a bald eagle and a seal.

Dear Jenn,
I wish I had known that some of your older guests were having a problem with the path to the ocean. I would have arranged for them to take a longer, but easier, path.
At any rate, I appreciate that everybody in your extended family were wonderful guests, and hope you'll be able to return next year.
We loved our stay. Nice 5 minute drive to town, 15-20 minute bike ride. The access to the water was a short steep path through some woods, so not accessible to everyone. But blueberries to pick and we were just in time! Beautiful views from every room. Wonderful family vacation.

The same topography that creates such panoramic views of the ocean from every room in the house does make one short stretch of our path down to the ocean steep. However, if this poses a problem for anyone in your group, let me know and I'll do what I did for Madeline -- arrange for you to take an alternate, slightly longer but flat route across the lawn of our adjacent home.
Whichever route you take, you'll find our oceanfront to be quite spectacular ... equal to the most beautiful shorefront in Acadia National Park!
This house is so spacious and well-appointed that our group of three families (11 adults and teens total) had plenty of room to spread out and be comfortable. Kitchen had more than everything we needed to cook for a big group. The views are unbeatable, and the access to town and Acadia are awesome. The hosts gave us great information in advance that we put to good use, plus answered all questions promptly while we were there. So glad we chose this home for our Bar Harbor adventure!
Absolute best location, property, house, amenities, and hosts!
Our week at the Rising Sun was perfect. We so enjoyed waking up and enjoying the peaceful mornings at the house / property (nothing beats the combo of morning coffee and that view). And, after the days excursions, we always looked forward to coming back home to the beautiful house and private beach. On the property, alone, we picked wild raspberries, saw deer, fox, and a ferret (?) I don’t think it could be a more relaxing setting. Ned and Nick were amazing, responsive hosts throughout and the location, with its proximity to Bar Harbor and a lot of the key sites in Acadia, cannot be beat. Couldn't recommend this property more!
Rising Sun is very private and quiet with beautiful views of the ocean from the house. The location allows you to walk from the house and go directly onto trails that lead you into the park. Kitchen was well stocked, owners were super responsive. Those with mobility issues should be very careful renting this home as there are many stairs and some with no handrails. House was very clean, but knocked off points for no shampoo, conditioner (did find hotel size shampoos in kitchen pantry) etc. in any of the bathrooms, few bedside lamps (bring a Kindle if you want to read at night).

It seems that our housekeeper in showing our guests around Rising Sun upon their arrival may have neglected two important points that are not obvious unless shown:
*For any guests who forget to bring their own, we have an ample supply of shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, eye shades, slippers, and more. These are centrally located for those who need them, and normally Tina shows these to the arriving guests.
*As for reading in bed, each bedroom has overhead lighting that can be adjusted for reading via a dimmer slider in the light switch; this lighting complements the reading lamp next to the bed. Again, this feature needs to be pointed out to the arriving guest, who otherwise may not be aware of this dimmer feature.
As for guests with mobility issues, the house does have three floors, and though the Ground Floor can be accessed directly (without steps) from the parking area, the normally used entrance to the First Floor requires use of steps. These steps are significantly wider and deeper (by a foot) than normal steps, which makes them much easier and safer to navigate than narrower steps (with or without railings.)
Prospective guests with mobility issues should assess our photos in considering whether they might find the steps needed to directly access the First Floor (rather than the Ground Floor) to be excessive.
I regret that Kristina did not make me aware of her concerns while she was there, because most likely they could have been easily ameliorated.
Large home well maintained and very well stocked. Dog friendly. Excellent support from owner and manager. Lovely view of the ocean. Large dining table. Porches for sitting and viewing ocean. New gas grill. Hot tub with night lights. Parking for four cars. 15 minutes to everything in Bar Harbor. 6 bedrooms with queen or king beds. Perfect for our family of 10 - a few seniors and most adults. No small children.
We so enjoyed our stay at Rising Sun. After considering other properties, we chose this one. The space of the home is well thought out and quality amenities abound! We had a group of 10 people, three generations ranging in ages 2-60. Everyone enjoyed the star filled evenings, panoramic ocean views, sounds of the surf, relaxing in the hot tub and lounging on the decks. The home is grand yet comfortable. I thank Ned and Nick for their expertise of the area. Their suggestions on activities for group surpassed our expectations. They care about their guests and made us feel welcome in their home. Thank you again.
Our family totally enjoyed our stay in Maine in large part due to the many amenities afforded us Ned and Nick. Ned was staying at their other home and eagerly provided us with tips for rainy days, ideas for adventures, and even gave us a roll of quarters so we wouldn’t have to pay for parking in Bar Harbor. The beautiful home is well equipped with so many things that we thought we would have to buy…paper towels, toilet paper, dish cleaning supplies, garbage bags, etc. Our family group of 11 all joined in to put together one of the many puzzles that is provided. Beds are comfortable and rooms are spacious.
The location is about 7 minutes outside of Bar Harbor in a very wooded area that has it’s own trails in the neighborhood. Quiet and convenient.
Loved Acadia! If you want a convenient location in a really comfortable setting with very accommodating hosts, choose this home!

Great view and sounds of the surf
Our group was there a few weeks ago and had a wonderful time. The house was large enough for our big party needing 5 bedrooms with room to spare. The views are great, and the sounds equally soothing. The owners were very helpful throughout the process and were more than happy to help with anything we needed. The walk to the water/rocks is short and a few evenings were spent sitting on the rocks as the tide came in - very enjoyable.
Two things to make people aware of that may not be evident from the listing. 1) The jack-and-jill bathroom between two of the upstairs bedrooms has a shower that an exhibitionist will love. Its not much of a problem unless you fear someone from your own party looking up at you, but it may be bothersome for very modest people. Blocking the window would ruin the fantastic view, so its a trade off. And 2) Its no outdoor shoes in the house, so bring a pair of house slippers or something. We had a fall when someone was navigating the stairs in socks, beware.
The kitchen is very well stocked if you like to cook. We only did a few times, but had more than we needed. On our rainy day the pizza delivery guy found us back there too.
Lots of hiking to do in the area, Acadia is fantastic!

Thanks, Rick, for your letting us know of these two issues, which we are now handling as follows:
Regarding our "no outdoor shoes" policy, I normally advise people of this when we talk on the phone, but must have missed this with you, so I've now added it to our written material that we send to guests before they arrive. I suggest that all guests bring indoor slippers or shoes rather than just relying on socks inside the house.
Regarding the bathroom curtain (or lack thereof), I actually had checked from outside and I didn't perceive any problem (without binoculars!) due to distance and angle of view; but it is easy enough to fix... I'm having Tina (who greets our arriving guests) offer them the option of a curtain in that bathroom. This way, they themselves can choose -- view or curtain!
I not only thank you for pointing out these two issues, but also, for the beautiful glasses you kindly gave me for my bourbon! I love them!
I hope you and your friends are able to visit Rising Sun again in the future. Emily and I enjoyed meeting you all!
This home was perfectly situated- close to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. It was perfect for our group of 12. We loved waking up to sunrise over the Atlantic! The house was well appointed and had everything we needed. We did some cooking and were happy that some supplies were left that we could use ( oil, spices etc). The owners were great… very communicative and helpful!
My family and I had a wonderful time in Bar Harbour.
The home was will stocked with supplies.
I look forward to staying at the home again.

I was a little nervous bringing the whole to a house on my first rental scenario. We couldn’t have been more pleased with the entire process. Ned and Nick were extremely responsive from our first inquiry and the house was perfect. I think the kitchen was better stocked than our own! If you want to get away from the town but only be 10 min away this is your spot! Total privacy. Also Tina who was there when we arrived to make sure we were all set was super pleasant and helpful. First class operation
Our family stayed the week of 8/13. This home worked perfectly for out family of 12. It was spacious, wonderfully decorated and had everything we needed and more. We especially enjoyed the deck looking out over Frenchman's Bay. Hosts were unbelievably accommodating and readily accessible. Loved every minute and wanted more. A week in Acadia is not nearly enough. Thanks and Cheers to the owners.
This house was conveniently located - very close to the park entrance and 10 minutes from Bar Harbor. Our group ranged from 3 years old to 75 and everyone had a great time. The hikes were amazing and the sunrises from the deck were beautiful. We rented E bikes and pedaled around the carriage road system. The house was stocked with everything you would need. We loved our visit to The Rising Sun. *****
The house is beautiful, spacious, immaculate, comfortable, and exceptionally well supplied. The views are breathtaking. We couldn't have asked for more.

About the host
Hosted by Ned or Nick
The most important aspect of our hosting is that we strive to make this your best vacation ever! This effort depends on five major activities:
1. Off Season Maintenance
2. Preparation of Our Proprietary "Best Possible Day" Planning for Your Family
3. Housekeeping Staff's Cleaning and Preparation of Our Home for Your Family
4. Making You At Home Upon Arrival
5. Nick and Ned Are Available 20 Hours a Day As Support for You During Your Stay
We've been vacationing on MDI since1972. This is our dream spot, which we bought 40 years ago, and we designed our home to be equal to its very special setting. I was the general contractor, and watched over every detail of construction, living in it with my beloved dogs even before the house was fully enclosed.
My wife selected and modified the magnificent colors on the walls (I personally enjoy the colors as much as the ocean views!); my own unique contributions are 'Notre Dame' (the entrance hall and curvilinear staircase named after my favorite building in the world), and the kitchen and pantry, which reflect my own design of space that makes the preparation of meals, from simple to complex, a calm and fulfilling activity.
Our home is fully dog-friendly. We provide dog beds, water bowls cleaned and filled with fresh water prior to your arrival, etc. A high quality vet service is available 10 minutes away; and in case of a life-threatening, difficult emergency, one of the country's best 24 hour, tertiary care hospitals is in Scarborough, three hours away.
We put dog covers on furniture for dogs who are accustomed to sleeping with their humans!
Most importantly, we do not allow guests to bring onto the property cleaning supplies, vaping equipment, recreational drugs or similar items that could pose life-threatening risks to dogs or children if inadvertently left in accessible places.
Why they chose this property
We bought this land because, the first time we visited at Thanksgiving of 1982, it spoke to our souls. For all the years when our careers didn't allow us to spend more than a few weeks on Mount Desert, we felt blessed just to be able to sit on our rocky ledges and love Frenchman's Bay and the Gulf of Maine.
The photo gallery on our website hints at the natural beauty that'll surround you at Rising Sun.
What makes this property unique
There is no other land like this, and we've put our creativity and love into making a home for ourselves and our dogs and our guests that befits land that our family views as sacred...
