A light footprint
In creating our Portland Garden Studio, one of our goals was to recycle and re-purpose as much as possible. We had fun doing it and thought we’d share this list with our guests:
*The masonry for the patio came from a Portland school when they updated.
*The rocks that surround the patio were buried in the gardens here from the ‘50s.
*The decking was removed from Rob’s brother’s house and reinstalled.
*The deck framing and masonry supports came from a Craig’s List ad - the owners were re-designing their back yard.
*The ceiling in the apartment is original. We removed the sheetrock, painted the beams, and left the fir attic decking alone. If you look carefully at the ceiling you’ll see the blue grading marks on the lumber from 1945 or so: 3,3,3,2,3 etc.
*The wood frames inside the wall niches came from old cedar barn wood.
*In early 2015, we installed a photovoltaic solar panel system on the roof. You can’t see it from the driveway or the guest side of the house, but it produces enough electricity to power almost all the needs of the house, including the hot tub.
We try to not use any herbicides, and recycle just about everything that the recycling people will take.
Come on over. We'll leave the light on for you. GLBT Friendly

Beautiful, peaceful location. I loved my French press coffee in the morning sitting on the patio. The hot tub was the perfect location to relax after a long day exploring.
We had an amazing stay at this cute rental with a hot tub just outside the front door!
Highly recommend this studio; had all the amenities and a great host / hostess.
Great place to do day trips! Centrally located in Portland and right next to I-5!
Surprisingly quiet at night next to a busy day time road.
I would stay there again!
We enjoyed our stay and will definitely see if the property is available next time we are in the Portland area. Easy access on and off the I-5, and the hot tub was a nice bonus! Next time we hope for better weather so we can enjoy the garden and the zip line :)
We had an amazing time while we were in Portland. We enjoyed coming back to the house after exploring the area and enjoyed the hot tub. If we are ever back in the area we would definitely stay there again.
My partner and I really enjoyed a nice long weekend together in the owl cottage! Beautiful trees and yard, very comfortable bed, and relaxing hot tub! It's a quick drive to downtown pdx! It's a place to relax for sure!
We really enjoyed our stay at this darling cottage! Private and comfortable-- the hot tub in the private garden was perfect. The cottage has everything you need (even beach towels and lots of tv streaming options). Very easy access to running around the city, but a quiet place to relax after you are finished running around. The hosts are lovely, and the communication is great. Stay here-- you'll love it!
It was my and my partner’s first time in Portland, and this place was exactly what we needed. The location was perfect (a quieter area but still a close drive to the main attractions of the city), the place was perfectly clean and Debi and Rob were so helpful. Thank you for an amazing stay!!

Great place for a honeymoon!
The garden studio is a great place to stay! It is very private, yet only minutes away from dozens of restaurants, and has easy access to downtown and many area attractions. The apartment is modern and very clean, and the owners are very friendly and great to work with. Highly recomended!

Thank you Silas! It was a real pleasure to have you here and we enjoyed meeting you. We hope you have many happy years together and are glad that we were able to help facilitate a great honeymoon experience and a cherished memory.
Really cute little place. Loved the hot tub and the garden. They really had everything you needed. Just really disappointed in Portland, it used to be such a great city but now it’s overran by the homeless and graffiti.

Great place and great location!
My wife and I came out and stay here for about 4 days and it couldn't have been any better. Debi was excellent checking in with us and making sure we had everything we needed. The apartment was set up perfectly, even with a welcoming note for us. Very impressed and somewhere we will definitely stay again when we come to Portland in the future.
Thanks so much for the hospitality!

Great space and even better vibe!
This place is nestled right in a corner behind a spacious driveway and fenced in for privacy. The studio is quaint but very adequate wth the highlights being the outdoor hot tub and picturesque garden complete with walking path, hammock and patio furniture under a gazebo. Very comfortable and home-like vibe, awesome hosts and convenient to everything in Portland. I was literally never farther than a 25 minute drive to anything I wanted to do. Can't wait to revisit and stay here again!

We were delighted to have you stay in our Garden Studio! It's very important to Rob and I that our guests are comfortable. We want you to feel like you are welcome and hope the amenities we provide go a long way towards that. We love our tall old growth firs and that they are enjoyed by so many from all over the world. Enjoying the hot tub in the privacy of your own garden is a treat after a long day of sight seeing that we know is important to many. We would love to have you come again, and thanks so much for the great review!

beautifully landscaped and private back yard
We had a great stay at Debi's place in Southwest Portland!!! The apartment was very clean and stocked with every kitchen utensil possible. Whole place was decorated very nice and the deck and private garden hot tub were fantastic! Back yard was huge and included a gas barbecue and pond. Small drive-way but was easy to access once you find it. Owners were friendly and great to work with, THANKS Debi and Rob!!!

Tom and Justin, it was great to meet you and so fun to know that you used to live close by. We are also delighted that you took such great enjoyment in the hot tub. I'm assuming you were teasing about the 'small driveway' in your review, since we have parked more than 7 cars there at one time! You were great guests, and we would love to see you again.
We absolutely loved the tucked-away property that felt like it was totally isolated despite a few neighbors around. The neighborhood was very quiet and the house was spotless, with all amenities we needed. We had a few hiccups as we couldn't figure out how to turn on the window A/C (it was unseasonably hot when we were there), but the owner was extremely responsive and was very helpful with all our questions. Debi even gave us some recommendations on neighborhoods to visit! The property is absolutely lovely and tranquil, and impeccably maintained. We had a wonderful time and can't wait to visit in cooler months!

Best nights sleep in a long time!
My mom, my daughter and I stayed here for the weekend while house hunting. It was so nice to have a hot tub to relax in at the end of the stressful days. We all slept hard, even my 1 year old. They had everything we needed for her including a high chair and play n pack. Debi and Rob brought over a slide and play tent for her which she loved. They are wonderful people. Location is amazing. Close freeway entrance, on bus line, close to costco, Winco and Walmart. Kitchen was well equipped. Yard was beautiful and hammock was relaxing. We enjoyed all the amenities. I highly recommend this rental and I will use in future if needed.

It was fun to have a child in the area again! And good for us too, in that we have some toys and children's equipment that we could share with you. We take such delight in our grandchildren, that it felt good knowing there was you and your young family nearby. We are so glad that you enjoyed the hammock under the trees, too!
This super private garden studio was the perfect retreat from our everyday adulting stresses. It was amazing having a hot tub to relax in after an afternoon of playing a tourist in downtown Portland. So many fun places and eateries within short drives. We will be booking again!
I loved the property, the cottage is adorable. The yard is big, luscious and full of trees. And the hot tub was great!
The hosts are sweet and gracious, the cottage had everything we could have asked for and then some. I felt right at home.
Excellent location, quick drive to downtime, zoo, parks, gardens. Nice relaxing area; patio, garden, hot tub, and very peaceful.

Decent Stay
This stay was ok, it wasn't the best but wasn't the worst either. It was musty smelling but but was clean and the bed was decent. Quiet neighborhood, driveway was wonky but pretty easy to access.
An incredible property in Portland for anyone traveling in Oregon. Responsive host, clean property, amazing backyard. I would definitely stay again

About the host
Hosted by Debi
Your hosts, Debi and Rob embrace the sharing economy with the Owl Forest Studio and their ocean view beach home (the Gullhouse) being shared in the Short Term Rental Market. We love meeting travelers, hearing their stories and sharing our homes. Our podcast Hosting Your Home shares the inspiring stories of other hosts. Founders of the first nonprofit trade association for hosts, Host2Host.org we are also very active in the broader host community. Married for over 50 years, 3 children and 5 grandchildren give us a lot of opportunity to love life.
Why they chose this property
We fell in love with the park-like yard in 1976. The big Doug firs in the front offer a unique forested setting in a busy neighborhood. It's a great place to relax, and back in the day, it was a great place for our children to play. You might see the zip-line which is still used by our visiting grandchildren and the remnants of the tree fort Rob build for our kids!
What makes this property unique
Although the apartment is attached to our home, the area is completely surrounded by a 6ft fence (Rob's handiwork) that offers a quality of privacy that makes it feel like there are two separate homes here. We have two (almost) completely separate living spaces. We love being able to meet and greet our guests, but rarely see you after you arrive, unless you seek us out. We are available, but not intrusive. With the advent of Covid, we can offer you a completely contact-free arrival and departure.
The location is great, just 2 blocks off the freeway and in a neighborhood area that is spread out, with no houses looming over us. The #78 bus stops here, which is handy and downtown Portland is only about a 15 minute drive.
