About this property

Romantic Oceanfront Camp for Two

We opened the property for May and June, but check to confirm availability subject to our painters' schedule for exterior painting. Also, please check for the latest update from the State of Maine for travel restrictions due to Covid-19 before you make a reservation request.

Our camp is one of the original buildings at the historic Miles Fresh Air Camp founded in 1924 and was used as the dormitory. Babe Ruth and Ruth Gordon were two of the notable visitors of the children’s camp. It was purchased by the former owner in the early 1950s and converted into the floor plan you see today, but we have added a few features since we bought the property in 1996.

The camp has been featured in the September 1997 issue of Country Living magazine, July-August 1999 Country Living GARDENER magazine, Out on the Porch 2001 Calendar (Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, 2001), Gardens Maine Style (DownEast Books, 2001), and Country Living: The New Look of Country (Hearst Books, 2004). (Sorry, the flowers you see in the photos are seasonal when we are in residence.)

Enjoy all your meals outdoors in the screened porch or inside with a full view of the water.

Although the camp is approximately 1,000 sq. ft., it sleeps only two in one queen bed in an ocean view bedroom (pictured). The other bedroom is Sharon's studio, and we use a third room as a library, Jeff's office, and the laundry room (lucky Jeff). The living room with fireplace, dining area, and kitchen are pictured. Bath with shower is off the hallway.

Minimum one week (7 night) stay, but we are flexible on start day. We aren't a Saturday thru Saturday only operation. If we have a few open days between week-long reservations, we might make an exception to the 7 night minimum, but it would depend on our housekeeper's schedule.

We've added some conveniences for the 2016 season, but still no TV. Why ruin the views and the quiet (but don't miss 'In Tune by Ten' on Maine Public Broadcast Radio at 90.1 fm or 90.5 fm).

BE SURE TO CHECK THE "AMENITIES" FOR A LIST OF OUR FEATURES (i.e. Internet, kitchen furnishings, etc.)

One of a kind!
This 1925 ‘camp’ was the most amazing rental ever! It was seeped in history, authentic, filled with art and antiques and last but not least, love. The living room was comfortable and charming and featured a hearth fireplace, the deck was a stones throw away from the waves crashing on the rocks, and all other rooms were unique and cheerful. Perfect for the scenic beauty and nature of birds, squirrels and a frequent visitor chipmunk. Couldn’t have asked for a better vacation spot. Thank you for sharing…..

Enchanted June
What can I say? It was a childhood dream come true. Little cottage in the woods right on the ocean with crashing waves on the rocks. Other times just the gentle sound of the lapping water. Sunbathing and lunch on the rocks reading my book and my husband doing his photography. So lovely watching the lobsterman pull traps or in the afternoon sun and white puffy clouds watching the graceful sailboats gliding across the waters. It was the things movies or books are made of. Our host Jeff, was very kind and accommodating. The decor was lovely and comfortable cozy. The bed was oh so comfortable which is a top priority. There is a gorgeous dish of awesome sea glass to look at but don't take!!! Lol Very comfortable in many ways. The rocking chairs on the porch watching the boats go by or at night watching the Strawberry Super Moon come up over the ocean it was stunning!!! We did have a few issues because we were the official Guinea pigs of the season being the first ones there. Im sure everything will be a ok now that the season is in full swing.😃 Like i said Jeff was a very accommodating and helpful host. We would recommend for sure. Patti&Alan

Great place for a visit to Maine
The location and waterfront view are unbeatable. The house is cozy, comfortable, and stocked with everything we could imagine needing for our stay. The hosts were very welcoming and communicative with all questions that came up. We would go back!

About the host

Hosted by Jeff Prostovich and Sharon Lovejoy

Host profile image
Sharon Lovejoy is an author and illustrator of books about nature and gardening, children's books, and novels. Jeff Prostovich, her husband, is a her business manager and literary agent and a California real estate broker.

Sharon and Jeff also own Comfort Found Literary Lodging (vrbo 386838), a hide-away for book lovers in the middle of the charming, New England village of Damariscotta. It is steps from the river, theatre, bookstores, 12 restaurants, shops, galleries, and the wonderful Skidompha Library.

Why they chose this property

Long story short, we were in the right place at the right time. Dumb luck.

Years ago, I read the 19th century writings of Sarah Orne Jewett and fell in love with Maine. For years, we visited the Damariscotta/Bristol peninsula region and searched for an old property close to the water.

One autumn our real estate agent called to tell us there was a property coming up for sale on a private road–a road that seldom had anything on the market. Though we thought we knew every hidden area on the peninsula, we’d never been on this private, one lane road that threads along Little Harbor and faces John’s Bay.

When we came upon the cottage, virtually untouched since 1950, I kissed the shutters. “We found it,” I said, and Jeff agreed, though he saw all the hard work ahead. For the next few months, we readied the cottage through a series of changes for an upcoming magazine shoot.

Though we’ve owned it since 1996, we never take it for granted. Weather permitting, we eat our meals out on the screened porch where we watch the sun and moon rise over Pemaquid Point.

What makes this property unique

Peace. The glimmer and shifting of the ocean and sky. The scent of sea. Mile long private road perfect for walking. The sight of billowing sails. The putt, putt, putt of lobster boats. The flash of the Pemaquid light on fog and clouds. Indian pipes poking through the leaves. Terns and Gannets diving into dark waters.  A Bald Eagle holding court on the ledge in front of the cottage. The high, piercing call of the osprey. Pink Lady Slippers blooming among the blueberries. Chickadees and nuthatches, jays, goldfinches, and Phoebes everywhere. A tame chipmunk and a greedy squirrel.
