About this property

Large private apartment in a traditional Greek village with stunning views.

The ‘House in the Sun’ is a large well equipped 55sqm apartment with 180 degree views of the foothills of the white mountains.
Located on the edge the sleepy village of Paidohori, the house is 15 minutes from the lovely sandy beach resorts of Kalyves and 20 minutes from Almyrida.
The nearest mini market, pharmacy and taverna are in Agioi Pantes which is a very short drive - or a longer stroll away.

The apartment has a well equipped full sized kitchen, generous double bed and a large living area which has a single sofa bed and/or a travel cot for additional guests if required, and a separate modern shower room and toilet. The apartment has a TV, DVD and Wifi.

The solar-heated salt water swimming pool is shared with the property owners.

Heating in the winter and air conditioning in the summer are available if required.

Guests have sole use of a large private patio and a shaded seating area with amazing views.

The owners have several cats who enjoy greeting guests.

There are many interesting and varied walks around the area, along the coast, inland on the plains, or for the more adventurous into the mountains, all with stunning views and varied wildlife.
Several important archaeological sites are within easy reach by car.

Chania, the picturesque Venetian city with its historic harbour is a fabulous place to visit and stroll around the old town then eat by the waterfront or up the hidden side streets. It is only 30 minutes away by car or bus.

The village of Paidohori is situated between Chania and Rethymno. Chania airport is approximately 45 minutes away, and Heraklion airport is under 2 hours. We are 2-3 minutes from the Agioi Pantes junction on the national road.
There is public transport from Chania and Rethymno to Agioi Pantes on the national road where there is a taxi rank, however we would recommend guests hire a car.

The price includes a welcome pack of some bakery products, a selection of 'in season' local fruit, milk, tea and coffee to make your first morning breakfast a relaxing experience,

The English owners live upstairs in a separate apartment.

From 1st January 2025 we are required by the Greek government to collect 8 euros per night 'Climate Resilience Levy' on your arrival. However, from January 1st 2026 we have chosen to pay this on your behalf, meaning that there will be no extra charges on arrival.

The House in the Sun is a really well-chosen name. We had a wonderful stay in this cosy apartment, Kathie and Chris are truly excellent hosts, always friendly and helpful. Both check-in and check-out were hassle-free. The flat has a well-equipped kitchen, as well as a fireplace and air conditioning. And, of course, lots of friendly and curious cats arround.

Beautiful week in Crete

My husband and I had the best week in Crete, Chris and Kathy were the prefect hosts and very welcoming (and their cats were also very welcoming and friendly and gave the place a very homely feel). Wonderful week at a wonderful location

Kathy & Chris were fabulous hosts. Nothing was too much trouble for them, and their tips regards restaurants, places to visit and the general area were very helpful. Property is lovely, garden and pool gorgeous and views are just stunning. Wonderful stay!

The House in the Sun is a delight! A very comfortable and spacious apartment for 2 with everything you need (and more) provided. It was spotlessly clean, very nicely decorated and proportioned. Extra touches, like providing beach towels, very welcome especially as I forgot to bring any. Kathie and Chris are lovely hosts and very generous. The apartment is well placed for the beaches of northern Crete and for Chania and Rethimno, and enjoys a very tranquil position with beautiful views. Highly recommend a stay here, and will definitely return.

A beautiful and thoughtfully equipped apartment in a fabulous location with stunning views over the countryside. Kathie & Chris are excellent hosts who’ve spared no detail in providing every essential, and more, for the visitors to their holiday retreat. We came to Crete for a relax and collapse from our busy lives and found the perfect haven - we really loved it. What can we say The House in The Sun, for us it was pure paradise.The views are amazing and left myself and Julie breathless with their stunning colours and beauty.Watching the sunrise and sunset the colours changing on the Olive Groves and hills.What could be more wonderful than sitting by the pool watching swallows swoop down to drink.The owners cats with their individual personalities are adorable and wander around with grace.The property is immaculately clean, lovely comfy bed and gorgeous fresh linen.The owners Kathie and Chris are fantastic and a wonderful couple and are there to offer advice and assistance if you need it.Overall this truly is a remarkable property and area that will steal your heart and you will leave a little bit of it when you depart.

More than expected

After reading the reviews and so many positive reviews we decided to book this place. Well all i can say is we were not disappointed very clean with all you need. Wonderful well kept gardens and a beautiful pool plenty of areas to enjoy the sun but also a lovely shaded area under the wisteria to escape from the heat but for me the best was the Wonderful views of the olive groves flanked my the white mountains stunning with only the sounds of a Greek summer and the occasional Greek music playing in the distance which only enhanced the experience. If you enjoy the quieter life this is a place i would highly recommend

For our trip in Crete we were looking for an easily accessible and central location in the countryside. What is great about the House in the sun is that even if you live among olive, orange and lemon trees, sheeps and goats and enjoy long walks from village to village in a rural environment, you are relatively close to everything by car. The appartement has met our expectations. It was perfect for 2 and had everything you need. Because we travelled early May, we did not use the pool, but we have enjoyed spending time on the private terrace which offers a gorgeous view of the surroundings. Our hosts were also great to interact with and very helpful. And the cats,…we fell in love with them. We highly recommand this place.

This was a fantastic stay and the listing couldn't be more accurate. We stayed for 8 nights and it was our first holiday with our 5 month old baby.Kathie and Chris are great hosts. They really made us feel at home and went through everything with us when we arrived which put us at ease for the week and made us fully familiar with how to live comfortably during our stay.The views are stunning. The sunrises in particular were breathtaking given the apartment sits on an eastern facing hill. Kathie and Chris have done an incredible job with the design of the space as well.The pool - this was the standout for us. We were keen to still stay somewhere that enabled us to explore the west side of the island but the private pool was a huge plus point as we were keen to get our 5 month old into it and have the privacy and peace to do so at our own pace (without lots of kids splashing around or similar at hotel pools). Don't be put off by the pool being salt water - this isn't remotely as explicit as it sounds. It's a process of chlorinating the water and isn't remotely what you would guess a salt water pool would be like - do not let the naive understanding of salt water pools put you off - its better than a regular pool.Overall an unforgettable stay, which is lovely as we will cherish our first ever family holiday being somewhere as amazing as this.Do not hesitate if you are considering booking this apartment!!

Peace & tranquility

This place isn’t for everyone, which doesn’t mean I’m putting this place down, quite the opposite. If you love animals, especially cats, then come here (if you don’t like cats then don’t visit Greece!). If you love to be off the beaten track, but still close enough to not be totally cut off, then come here. If you want the option of being left to your own devices and I mean totally, no room service, no towel changes while you nap etc come here. We enjoyed the solitude, no noises bars, the long walks through rural villages, the peace and quiet (apart from the dogs, birds, goats etc) the lovely local villages with great Tavernas and warm welcomes. Yes this suited us perfectly and we are looking at returning soon, and WE NEVER do that to any place that we’ve visited before !

A lovely House in the Sun with great hosts, facilities and environment.

Our 3rd visit to Crete. This is a lovely, air-conditioned apartment, set in a quiet traditional village in a beautiful part of Crete. The views from the patio are stunning. The facilities provided within the apartment, and outside, were all we needed for our 9 night stay. The bed is very comfortable and the pool is everything it looks, maintained at a constant 30 Deg C. Within 30 minutes travel is the lovely seaside resort of Kalyves. There are many golden, sandy, beaches within easy reach. Chania airport and city are about 30 minutes drive as is a Lidl store. There are local shops and chemists within a few minutes drive. I advise hiring a car, in order to get the best from your stay. The hosts, Kathie and Chris are lovely people! They are extremely helpful, friendly and kind. The advice that they gave us on the local area was really helpful. Thank you both, so much, for everything! We thoroughly recommend thiis for a holiday to remember! Roly & Mandy Love.

What a find!

We have just returned home after spending a fantastic, relaxing, 2 weeks with Kathie and Chris at The House in the sun. It really couldn't have been any better. Communication before our trip was spot on with extremely easy directions with pictures sent that made finding the apartment very easy. We arrived in the early hours and were welcomed by Alfie the cat who kept us company for our holiday. Fantastically well equipped, spotless apartment. Fantastic sitting area with amazing views and the pool!… we spent a lot more time at the pool then we have done on any other holiday as we found it so relaxing. There is a great little village about 5 mins away with a well stocked shop, a great coffee place that do delicious cakes, a gyros shop and a lovely taverna serving amazing food. Lots of beach choices can be found without having to venture too far from base. Kathie and Chris are the perfect hosts with loads of advice available & laughs. We were even treated to a some quiet background music one day while they rehearsed for a gig they had locally that week. Would absolutely not hesitate to recommend the house in the sun to everyone and have already given all the details to a lot of our friends and family. Les photos sont la réalité!

Un logement en tout point exemplaire, une vue magnifique et des hôtes très prévenants sans être omniprésents (bien que sur place). Katie et Chris ont repondu a nos demandes soit directement soit par messagerie en quelques minutes à chaque fois. Le seul petit bémol ne vient pas de l'habitation mais de l'île elle-même (et comme beaucoup d'îles que nous avons faîtes), ce sont les distances a parcourir avec une vitesse limitée et des petites routes (mis a part la route nommée "90", la seule nationale de l'île). Pour la location par contre rien a dire c'est le top!

Paradies für Mensch und Miezen

Super schönes Haus mit tollem Pool. Kathy und Chris sind liebevolle und aufmerksame Gastgeber. Man sollte Katzen lieben, so wie eigentlich überall in Griechenland. Besonders aber dort. Wir haben neben Kathy und Chris auch alle anderen Bewohner wie Alfi, Dave, Arthur, Chlotilde und besonders Minnie ins Herz geschlossen. Gerne kommen wir wieder.

Entspannung pur

Wir (Ehepaar Mitte 50) haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt und die Ruhe im House of the sun tat uns sehr gut. Die Unterkunft (Wohnung und rund ums Haus sowie der Pool waren einzigartig. Kathie uns Chris waren sehr nett und zuvorkommend. Der Hauskater Alfi hat uns viele Schmunzelmomente beschert.

I am a 'retired' paediatric physiotherapist who worked for 30 years mainly with children with Cerebral Palsy, mostly in their own homes. Chris was a software developer then team manager for nearly 40 years
We moved to Crete in October 2016 basically to escape the M6! Chris's commute from Walsall to Coventry was getting longer and longer and he'd had enough. After 30 years I was finding it harder and harder to crawl around the floor all day treating the kids!
We now live here in Crete, enjoying the empty roads and the outdoor lifestyle in the sun. We spend our days marvelling at the views and bird watching from the balcony, walking in the surrounding areas, eating amazing food at the local taverna's, playing music, or for me, snorkelling in the clear blue waters whilst Chris either explores the coastline or sits and contemplates life!

Why they chose this property

Chris and I have travelled throughout the Greek islands on 2 week holidays for the last 20 years but really fell in love with the Apokoronas area of Crete. The surrounding countryside is lush and green, rather than brown and barren like other parts of the island. It is also close to our favourite city, Chania with its picturesque Venetian harbour and narrow cobbled streets.
We bought this particular property in Paidohori for several reasons.
We wanted to be in the heart of a Greek community away from the main tourist areas but within 15 minutes of the golden sandy beaches and friendly resorts of Kalyves and Almyrida.
We fell in love with the view of the mountains and olive groves which change as the light changes during the day.
We are aware that holiday time is precious and really want you to make the most of your time here and have a fabulous holiday so we also liked the idea that our rental customers could be completely private if they wanted to be. However, we would be available for support and advice if required or to sort out any problems you may have, instantly.

What makes this property unique

The house is built from stone in the traditional Greek style, with the archway through to the bedroom area, but it has all the modern features of air conditioning and mosquito screens for the summer and double glazed windows and a log burner as heating for the winter.
The views are spectacular from the large terrace where you can sunbathe or sit under the shaded pergola and sip local wines.
The solar heated swimming pool is accessed via a gate on the guest terrace.
