Wonderful place to stay while exploring the beautiful area around Kanab

This is a very beautifully decorated cabin that is clean, well maintained, and extremely comfortable. The photos don’t do it justice! We loved our stay here—convenient to so many great places to explore, quiet at night, and easy to come home to after a day of hiking. We’d love to come back some time. Thanks!

Comfort, warmth, and friendliness

My nine-year-old granddaughter and I stayed four nights at the casita while exploring the area and volunteering at Best Friends. It was the perfect haven after long and busy days, offering everything we needed with the bonus of lovely Southwestern art works reflecting the owners' interest in the rivers, rocks, and canyons of the area. The setting is lovely, with red rock cliffs in every direction. True outdoors people with a deep knowledge of the area, Megan and Latimer are an excellent resource on available activities and adventures near Kanab, starting with the brochures and maps made available in the casita. I come to Kanab every few years and hope to stay here each time I make it back.

Beautiful home with very nice owners

We enjoyed our stay in Kanab. The house was very clean and beautifully decorated. We found everything we needed. They even offered a good selection of movies to watch. We have met Megan who was very nice and is a very experienced outdoor expert. Her advice was so helpful when we planned our hike to the "Subway" in Zion. We have lived in the house for three nights with our two boys (13 and 15 years old) and think that the house is not really suitable for 4 people. The kitchen table only has three chairs and the sofa bed is too short and uncomfortable for a teenager.

Perfect home for a relaxing or adventerous stay!

What a treat to be able to stay here! This home is so charming and sits in the most breathtakingly beautiful location. The casita had the cutest and most comfortable decor, makes you feel right at home. I loved the stocked organic tea, I definitely enjoyed it! The community is quiet, safe, and close to town. We zip lined with kanab zip line right up the street. Such a beautiful location to zip thru!! And the family that runs it are absolutely fantastic, very nice people. We also went canyonering with Zion rock and mountain guides. We had an amazing time with a safe and knowledgeable tour guide. He took us to a beautiful canyon and we some really awesome repels! Megan and Lat are very friendly and kind. They make you feel like you are home away from home. Any questions and concerns, they are more than happy to help. Definitely appreciated their hospitality! Can't wait to return to the casita next visit to kanab!

Fantastic choice, couldn't have been happier.

I am so happy I picked this home for our family: my husband and our 2 sons (ages 9 &12.) The home is cozy, well decorated, super clean (fantastic linens and comforters!) a stack of guide books and maps, and to top it off, Megan has a well equipped kitchen, which was fantastic because we cooked at home almost every night. I was a little worried about the boys sharing the pull out couch, but it's a queen bed and quite comfortable, and they were content. Plus the boys could throw around a football on the driveway every morning, you can't do that at a hotel! Megan is so nice & friendly, and she and her husband know Utah and hiking spots inside out. Kanab was a perfect location to get to Bryce and Zion, but Megan recommended many gorgeous hikes right nearby that were not crowded at all. Our favorites were Toadstools and Lick Wash - great rock climbing if you have kids. We also did a gorgeous drive with stops for hiking: a loop around 89, to 89A, heading south to Horseshoe Canyon, to the Navajo Bridge and then Lee's Ferry, and back home. You come out of the Vermillion Cliffs and into the Kaibab Nat'l Forest, which is also stunning. Southern Utah is gorgeous, and this could not have been a better accomodation for us thanks to Megan!

Great Location

Cabin was small but clean with plenty of room for three of us. Excellent location near Kanab to shop. Can easily make day trips to Lake Powel, North Rim, Zion, and Bryce canyons. A really nice hiking trail just behind the cabin. I would like to have had controls for air conditioning in the cabin.

Quiet and clean

This is the 4th time we have stayed at this property. The host family is very kind to check-in each visit. The Casita is perfect size for 2 people. It is close to Kanab and has a wonderful view. We will stay here each time we go to Kanab to work at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. We plan our volunteer dates around the time the Casita is available. Thank you Megan, Lat and family (including Blue)

Perfect for us!

Perfect for a couple. Comfortable, clean and had everything we would need and those thoughtful little extras we appreciated (shampoo, conditioner, soap, tissue, q-tips, extra blankets, lots of hangers, teas, oil, salt and pepper, etc). Lat was so thoughtful to get the hot tub ready and help us with moderating the temp. He had some great advice about Grand Canyon area hikes we appreciated. Bed was comfortable, kitchen quaint, but totally worked for making breakfast each day. The only drawback was our inability to moderate the thermostat, since it shared the central system with the main house. But more of a minor inconvenience than a serious source of discomfort. We enjoyed our stay, and the surrounding scenery was awe-inspiring!

Nice quiet sweet spot !

Wonderful to be near Kenab without having to be directly in the activity and noise. This place is far enough away from main road that traffic noise is non-existent. Sweet place to have everything like home.

One of our best trips ever

We loved our stay at Megan and Latimer's casita. It was the perfect home base for volunteering at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary and visiting Zion and Bryce Canyon. We loved the layout, coziness and privacy of the casita, and enjoyed the hot tub and porch, despite it being January. The owners' dog was away temporarily, so we were able to bring a Best Friends dog over for a sleepover (otherwise we wouldn't have been able to do this, per Best Friends' rules). Everything about the trip was perfect, including this great VRBO stay. I hope we will be able to return someday.

Secure and comfortable base camp for exploring this amazing area!

I am a solo traveler and stayed at the Kaibab Casita in late September. It is a great location to use as a home base while exploring the surrounding National Parks and Monuments. About a half hour southeast of the East Rim area of Zion, an hour and a half north of Grand Canyon's North Rim, and about an hour west of some great hiking in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument as well as Vermillion Cliffs. I enjoyed being just outside of Kanab for the added solitude while having easy access to the stores and restaurants in town. Megan and Latimer were very welcoming. They gave great advice on hikes in the area. They were easy to reach for questions but definitely respected my privacy. Yes, the Casita is attached to their home, but it still felt very private and secluded. The unit itself was very clean, bigger than it appears in the pictures, and has most everything you need for a short stay. I would definitely stay here again in the future!

Lovely Family hideaway

We love this place and are returning guests. We hope to continue this tradition! The hosts are so welcoming, and every square inch if this Casita is beautiful and prepared for guests with love and care. The bed is very comfortable and everything you could possibly need for a smooth stay is present, including anything kids may need. The setting is gorgeous and we've been very impressed with Kanab for it's proximity to national parks but also the pool, park, best friends animal sanctuary, library, amazing bakery and great restaurants! We highly recommend this Casita whether you're traveling with or without kids.

Great home base for amazing Utah adventures

The cabin was beautifully decorated and gave the two of us just the right amount of space to relax in the evening after our long days in the national parks. The only less-than-optimal situation was the temperature in the cabin. Granted we were visiting in July during a heat wave, but we struggled to stay comfortable for the little time we spent there in the evenings. An addition to the cabin instructions that opening the windows at night is necessary could help, as well as something to help circulate the cool air from the swamp cooler vent. Lat was very responsive to our needs during our stay.

Peaceful getaway with beautiful surroundings

I stayed at the charming Casita for an entire month, and I loved it. While there, I volunteered at Best Friends and visited some national parks (this is the perfect "base camp" for many different areas). I agree with previous reviews that state the photos do not do the Casita justice. I loved all the artwork on the walls, the many books to read, and the abundant maps and information provided about the local area. The decor was tasteful and the furniture was comfy. It felt like home. I could easily unpack a month's worth of clothes with room to spare in the closet. It was the perfect size to have a friend visit and sleep on the fold-out couch. I adore Megan and her family and could go to them for questions large and small, from everything ranging from hiking areas (Megan and Lat are super knowledgeable) to how to turn on the coffee machine. Megan went out of her way to show me some trails nearby. It's clear they want visitors to enjoy their time in the Casita and are very responsive to any requests. They take care to provide privacy while still being available. I particularly like the setup of the Casita separated from the "big house" by the garage. It was close enough that I did not feel isolated staying there alone, but far enough that I did not feel I was invading their space, or vice versa. The Casita is at the base of red rock cliffs, outside of downtown Kanab, but only by about 10 minutes. That 10 minutes is enough to make the Casita feel removed and tranquil. I walked my dog around the neighborhood nearly every evening and enjoyed the many rabbits running around, the neighbor's inquisitive horse, and the serenity of gazing at the cliffs behind the home. The area is far from any city lights and you can see layers of stars upon stars in the night sky. I dream of going back!

Perfect

The location provided a perfect central location for visiting the north Rim of the Grand Canyon, Zion, and Bryce. The house was very clean and the bed was more comfortable than a $200+ per night hotel in Salt Lake City. Megan (the owner) was extremely helpful and available to answer questions. I would stay here again on a return trip.

Perfect location, beautiful home, awesome view!

We loved our stay at Kaibab Casita! The house was the perfect size for the two of us and so much more homey and welcoming than a hotel. Megan went above and beyond supplying essentials and extras for our stay. The bed was comfortable and the towels were extra thick and luxurious. We were able to take day trips to Zion, Bryce, and the north rim of the Grand Canyon. We wouldn't hesitate to stay at this wonderful home again.

Quiet, clean & comfortable!!

Great little spot, better than any hotel. Great location, super clean and very comfortable. The owners are laid back and flexible and the Casita has literally everything you could ever need. Super quiet area, just far enough out of town to feel secluded. We have no complaints and were extremely pleased with our decision to stay. If I ever travel to the Kanab area again I will choose this as my location. Thank you Meagan for a great week. Matt & Leah Bertrand

Perfect base for adventure!

Stayed at the casita in Kanab while visiting Zion. The pictures don't do the little house justice, at all. Just lovely. All the things we needed and a great spot for basing out of Zion. We dealt with some crazy weather and we enjoyed the fire place to take the chill out.

We were very happy with the accommodations. It was everything we expected. It was just right for the two of us and the dog, cozy with the right amount of amenities. We really appreciated the fireplace and the hot tub since it was winter with marginal weather. Megan and Latimer were very nice and helpful with our questions and our needs. We would stay there again in the future. Thanks again. Greg and Carol

About the host

Hosted by Megan Smith

Host profile image
We are Latimer and Megan Smith. We both grew up in Southern Utah and have been residents of Kanab since our high school days. Latimer is a manager for a river rafting company and a Grand Canyon river guide, and Megan, a former backcountry ranger, now runs the rental and works part-time as a science teacher. We have two kids, a friendly dog, Waylon, chickens, and Guinea pigs. We live in town, so give us a shout if you need anything!

Why they chose this property

We bought this property because of the amazing views and the quiet neighborhood. We think you will enjoy it too. The sunsets, sunrises, and night skies out here are unparcelled. You can also be a trail within minutes of leaving our home. We are surrounded by national parks and monuments. Come stay!

What makes this property unique

We drawn to this home because of its big views. The front of the house looks out toward the Kaibab Plateau where the Grand Canyon lies below. The back of the house affords a magnificent view of what locals call "The Island in the Sky", a small throne of white sandstone among the dark vermilion cliffs. An hour or so of hiking will get you to the Island, also known as Mansard, where a panel of ancient petroglyphs await.
