Remember Hawaii is tropical. Typically, there are two seasons. The rainy and dry season. When it rains it usually rains at night or in the afternoons. Mornings and midday can be the very best times to go snorkeling and kayakingKealakekua Bay is generally very calm. If the water is rough wait for it to calm down. Be safe! Create good vacation memories.
The weather here is pretty steady. Sometimes we have an unusually hot day. We have fans in each room and 2 air conditioners. Recently our caretaker forgot to turn on the air conditioner early enough to cool the hot day air quickly. That won’t be forgotten again, as it takes several hours to cool the house down. Which is typically in the lower 70 degrees F with a humidity reading of 74 or 78% in rainy season

Great Family Vacation

Overall we had an excellent stay. Plenty of room for a group of 10 with upstairs being a perfect place for all the kids to sleep. The ocean access that was walking distance from the house was great for afternoon excursions to snorkel and cool off in the bay.

Great house for all ages

We had a great time during our stay. We loved the 3 minute walk to the beach. The snorkeling is very good just minutes away. We were able to enjoy the best sunsets every night. The property managers left fruit for us every morning. The house is well stocked for cooking and cleaning. Everything is modest and comfortable.

We arrived Sept 27, 2025, but left within an hour due to unbearable interior heat. The listing promised working AC, but the interior was 84F despite both small wall units running. I told the host we’d stay if she could get it to 74F or lower, but she said the units will not get that cool. I was open to the possibility, but as a building inspector with 30 years of experience, it was clear the wall units could never cool a large open house in 90F Hawaiian humidity, even if left on for days. The host later admitted the caretaker forgot to turn on the AC until about an hour before arrival. I showed her nearby window units that could fix the issue easily and offered to stay if cooling improved. The house matched the listing and was ideally located near great snorkeling, but it was uninhabitable on arrival. With it being late on a Saturday night, lodging options were scarce, and we spent half a day scrambling for a new place. While we were preparing to leave, the caretaker confronted my family, made unsolicited political remarks, cursed at my son, and filmed them—oddly, right after we’d been discussing frustrations indoors, making us suspect we were overheard. The host later confirmed the caretaker “said something inappropriate politically” and apologized. She refunded us in full, and VRBO reimbursed the difference for emergency lodging. If proper AC is added, the house could be great. Confirm cooling upgrades before booking.

Terrific host and home!

Anna was a perfect host. She was very welcoming and provided super helpful information, both about the easy check-in and tips for during our stay. The home was absolutely perfect for our family of five adults (us and our 3 adult kids in their 20s). Parking accommodated our two rental cars. Bathrooms and beds were just what we needed. Abundant towels. Full kitchen stocked with essentials and the grill worked great for cooking our meals (mahi mahi tacos for the win!). The large table on the patio was great. The home was a peaceful place to come back to after playing all day and the location was wonderful. We have stayed in the Manini Beach area before and would definitely return to Anna's home. Thank you!

Napo'opo'o Heaven

Perfect location...snorkeling/kayaks less than a five minute walk, and Two Step a 10 minute drive. We we made good use of the kitchen and grill. It is the tropics so the afternoon temps get a little warm when the house is buttoned up, but the breeze and occasional light rain cools it down nicely.

Lovely spacious home with bea views of Kealakekua Bay

We had a wonderful time at Anna’s place. The kitchen is amazingly well stocked and we enjoyed many meals on the spacious lanai. Views from the upstairs open room were stunning and a great place to do yoga! Every night we walked down to Manini Beach to watch the sunset. Such a special place. Anna made us feel so welcome and was really helpful in getting us oriented. They had chairs and some snorkeling equipment that we borrowed and you can rent kayaks and paddle board right down the road to paddle to a beautiful snorkeling site near the Captain Cook monument.

Gorgeous stay by the water

We had a fantastic stay at Anna's beautiful house near Manini Beach. The house is a very short jaunt from the water, where we were able to enjoy many spectacular sunsets. The home is lovely and very well-appointed. I would add that it's even more lovely than the photos suggest, which I can't say of most properties. The lanai on the front of the house is well-suited to lots of leisure and relaxation, of which we enjoyed plenty. Anna is an incredibly responsive, kind and generous host, and she really struck a great balance of being easily available to us while also affording us plenty of our own space. I highly recommend staying here. We hope to be back!

The Perfect Space for 10 people

Anna and her house was exactly what we were looking for. We had a group of 8 adults and 2 children. The house was perfect and had plenty of rooms/beds for the group. The kitchen had all the amenities needed and they had laundry. The location was wonderful. It was a quick walk to the beach to watch the sunset. Anna was also very easy to work with. She was communicative and responsive in a timely manner. If I am back in Kona I will definitely be staying here. Thank you Anna!

Happy Holidays

Our family had a very pleasant 3 week stay here. The property was well-appointed for our needs. We appreciated having beach/snorkeling equipment and towels available for our use at the beautiful nearby bay, as well as coolers for hauling groceries and refreshments on road trips. There were activities and sights to enjoy on foot or by car. Our host was helpful in suggesting places to visit or picturesque places to eat, and also graciously shared with us some of the fruits and flowers found on site. Whether looking for a day to relax on a warm porch with a good book or a base camp from which to set out to explore all the sights on the island, this is the place to be. Mahalo Anna!

My favorite area of the house is upstairs ,with 2 balcony the view is spectacular with the ocean and the vegetation of the land expectational. communication with the host was excellent, Anna is nice and friendly. she made everything easy. the community is 45 minutes away from the airport, must have a car to get around. it does get warm on the island but there is air condition . i enjoy my stay at Ann's home. whenever you decide to visit Kona this home is a must. the community is quiet and the people is respectable and friendly. i give this home and community a ten out of ten. Amazing Hosts & Amazing Neighborhood

The hosts treated us like family. They were so gracious and kind. The location was outstanding and the views were spectacular. This is a perfect Hawaii spot where you can get the small town island feel and the neighborhood people were all so very nice as well. We loved going down to the beach in the morning to see the wildlife...so many fish, turtles, dolphins, crabs. We went in October and the water was perfectly lovely. The home was spacious for our group and we were able to host our children and grandchildren. This is a fantastic place to snorkel because of the coral and clear water. We were blessed so much by the people and the comforts. The home had everything we needed to host meals at home some of the time when we just wanted to relax. We also saw the stars and a meteor shower during our visit (for those who could stay up later ;) We had an incredible time and would definitely return here in the future. Thank you Anna & Catherine.

Excellence in Hospitality & The Perfect Family Vacation spot!

The first thing to mention is the Hospitality that Anna provided to our family. 7 adults and 2 children felt overwhelming but Anna was quick to put our hearts at ease. This was essential for us to make our 1st ever family trip a special one. We also met Catherine who was equally as wonderful. They were both so helpful with every question we had and yet also made it feel very private for our family. The house is very spacious with lots of comfortable beds. All the ammenities a family needs. The Lanai was our favorite place to relax with room for all. Overlooking all the beauty hawaii has to offer (including an ocean view) A short walk to a community park that had everything we could hope for. Beautiful setting, snorkling, relaxing, having a picnic and enjoying the perfect hawaiin vibe. Our son proposed to his girlfriend at this park with the most beautiful sunset ever created! This place is a hidden gem!! The home is located about 30 minutes from shopping and tourist spots. And about an hour from popular beaches but this was exactly what we were looking for. There are closer beaches so be sure to check those out before deciding to do a more crowded beach. Overall the experience provided with this home and Anna's warm, kind, and thoughtful hosting was nothing short of perfection. Thank you Anna (and Catherine) for everything. We all feel like we made new friends 💗

Captain Cook house review 2/27/2020 Property ID 72296

The setting is lovely, first rate, non touristy and very near a small, quiet park with picnic tables and swimming access to the ocean (no sand beach). The owner, Anna, is very helpful and attentive. The house is pleasant with a very well equipped kitchen and a large living area and lanai.  The biggest problem was noise from the construction, the building of a major addition to the house. The noise was quite disturbing during week days especially on the lanai. Anna responded by directing the noisiest construction noise to the far side of the property, but it was still noisy. This was exacerbated because many in our party spent all day at the house. The toilet situation was inconvenient at best, as only one of the two bathrooms is accessible from the main hallway, making it inconvenient for people on the third floor, and causing midnight waiting lines. The second bathroom is accessible only from in the master bedroom, making it generally inconvenient . The third floor area was very clean and neat, but consisted of one large room with 5 beds providing little privacy and was a bit noisy. All and all the beauty of the locale and most features of the house made up for the inconveniences we encountered.

Family vacation

My husband and I went with our three children, son in law and our three grandkids. The house was perfect for the 9 of us. We spent a lot of time in the morning and evening on the lanai. It was so peaceful and there is Manini Beach Park where you can get in the ocean that’s about a 5 minute walk. Some mornings we would walk down Manini Beach road just a little ways and sit on the rocks and drink our coffee and watch the ocean. Dharma and Catherine were amazing caretakers. We didn’t get the opportunity to meet Anna because she was out of town but before we left to go to Hawaii she made sure we had all the information we would need to find the house and get in. It made it really easy to find with her directions. My husband and I celebrated our anniversary and Dharma and Catherine brought us some beautiful flowers and a card. Our daughter celebrated her birthday and they dropped off a card for her too. If we had any questions they were always super friendly and helpful. There was a tsunami warning and we couldn’t go back to the house for almost 9 hours but Dharma and Catherine made sure we new about the tsunami warning and continued to check on how we were doing and to keep us updated. We so appreciated them they make you feel like family. This is a wonderful place and we would highly recommend staying here.

Captain Cook area home

The house was the perfect size for a group of 8 adults and one child. The walking distance to Manini Beach and Kealakekua Bay was the best. We were also only a ten minute drive to two step and some more amazing snorkeling. Took some time adjusting to the bugs (this is jungle atmosphere after all!) But overall we adapted quickly and loved it. The pwner was super responsive. Grandson loved the geckos!

We had 3 generations staying here for a week, ages 8-74. The location and accommodations were perfect. We all had a great time and profited from the outside eating area and bbq. The short walk to kid friendly swimming and snorkeling was an added bonus. The area is beautiful and peaceful. We all loved Anna’s place and were sad to leave. About the host

Host profile image
I bought and cleared the land, designed the home for my large extended family to enjoy vacations. The house was completed in 2002 and I have enjoyed this part of Hawaii for many years. There is a special feeling here in this historic place of healing.
Like me, many visitors have not wanted to miss out on this rejuvenating village, away from the crowded streets of town, to discover where the locals come to eat, drink and relax here at Kealakekua Bay with family and friends.
It does not take long for vacationers to soon treasure this place best known to the locals…. for its feeling of being “home”. There is no place like it…
I am often asked, what brought you here? I was studying Hawaiian healing with kahunas and Hawaiian kapunas, "elders" when in the late 1990's I looked across the bay and was struck by an overwhelming feeling of ecstasy. Within 8 months I found a lot for sale, cleared the land, designed a house and built it. It is one of my best decisions as it has brought much happiness to me and my family, as well as to guests who have come here from around the world.
We take great care of our guests and honor their privacy. We are responsive to needs and questions during your stay. We are just a text away

Why they chose this property

Once you are here at our home in Kealakekua Bay, on the Big Island of Hawaii.
You can enjoy the sound of the ocean, birds, feel the sweet Kona air…and you don't have to get in the car to enjoy swimming in Kealakekua Bay. walk to where you want to enter the bay…it is a delightful experience to go swimming with the dolphins in the bay in the morning.
This area of Hawaii is away from the crowds, quiet, no hotels…just outdoor enjoyment, in the water and out.
If you want to shop and explore the island. hop in the car go up the road…. and return, thankful that you are home again…rejuvenating, renewing being happy to be here again.
We have many quests return each year. They appreciate seeing upgrades to our home. We appreciate getting feedback from you while you are here so that we can continue to improve and enjoy your vacation.
Deep bow and thank you for consideration
and care of our home and property

Once you are here at our home in Kealakekua Bay, on the big Island of Hawaii..
You can enjoy the sound of the ocean, birds, feel the sweet Kona air…and you don't have to get in the car to enjoy swimming in Kealakekua Bay.. walk to where you want to enter the bay…it is a delightful experience to go swimming with the dolphins in the bay in the morning..
This area of Hawaii is away from the crowds ,, no hotels…just outdoor enjoyment, in the water and out.
