Why they chose this property
This multi award property has been in Paul's family for over 16 generations. The family still regularly uses it. The old homestead was completely rebuilt/finished in 2018. Tūrama is over-engineered to ensure it provides shelter during any major natural disaster event (earthquake, eruption/ash fallout, flooding, gales), as can occur from time to time in the Rotorua region.
Tūrama is a new house typology seeking to reimagine residential architecture in alignment with the twin streams of NZ identity promised under Te Tiriti (Māori version of Treaty) o Waitangi. The design concept was jointly generated by RTA Studio and Professor Paul Tapsell as a multi-creative, pre-Indigenous response to 16 generations of unbroken occupation. It was calculated and built, ensuring the completed home was carbon neutral.
Awards
2018 New Zealand Architecture Award - Housing Category
2018 NZIA Waikato / Bay of Plenty Architecture Award - Housing Category
2018 World Architecture Festival Award, Finalist - House Category
2018 Home of the Year Finalist (Three in NZ)

What makes this property unique
Tūrama is uniquely designed as a multi-generational retreat anchored by five ancestral points of origin. She elegantly wraps herself around all whom enter. Her manaakitanga (hospitality) is symbolically represented by forest-like timber uprights complete with an oxidised steel, taniko pattern, reflecting the kakahu (fine woven cloak) used in ceremonies by the whanau today. This manaakitanga is extended to all our guests.
