Stunning location in the hills above Arco da Calheta, this single storey stone-built house offers masses of space, comfort and an opportunity to enjoy glorious views and wonderful sunsets. The house is L-shaped, one end consisting of a huge open-plan lounge/kitchen/dining room with extensive windows/glass doors allowing you to enjoy the scenery .There is easy access to the garden, veranda, barbecue area & pool. The three south-facing bedrooms also lead out to the veranda, pool and garden. Pine trees cover the hills behind and a 'levada' (irrigation channel with footpath) runs below, inviting you to stroll east or west for as much as 20 km in either direction if you like!


REASONS FOR CHOOSING MADEIRA AND CASA ROCHINHA: For nature lovers, Madeira has plenty to offer, with a subtropical climate,fabulous views and a landscape covered with spectacularly colourful plants. Peter and Jeanne, the owners of Casa Rochinha, have established a lovely garden full of interesting plants. Part of the island has been pronounced a World Heritage protected site, this is the area of the Laurisilva forests located 15 minutes' drive away and well worth exploring, especially on foot. Walking the island has become very popular with visitors who can follow long trails along the islands water courses, locally known as levadas. For golfers there are two excellent golf courses and for those seeking sea swimming, you can pop down to the sandy beach at Calheta. The capital of the island is of course Funchal, 30 minutes' drive away. As well as being very attractive and spotlessly clean, it has interesting museums, Madeira wine lodges, an excellent variety of shops and many restaurants for all tastes and budgets.....

This has been a 10/10 holiday. The villa felt like home from day one and we have found it faultless; facilities and equipment have met our every need. The pool has been used most days, warming from a chilly 17ºC to a beautiful 27º today. The location of the villa is simply magical with different themes of the same view every morning and evening. The levada walks are just as good now as they were 18 years ago when we last visited Madeira and the views from the tops have been amazing. The kids have had a fantastic week & they should be pround of their achievement taking on the hard walks their Mums & Dads have done! Having said this they loved the beach at Calheta where they could enjoy a few hours of 'sand & sea'! Boat trips from Funchal to see fish/dophins were great. Rock pools for swimming at Porto Moniz also great. (Note from Charlie: I loved playing football on the sandy beach, swimming, the food and the glass bottom boat.)

Lovely house with stunning views. This is a great spot of you're keen to do some hiking, with a Levada walk right outside the front door. Peaceful, with plenty of space and a perfectly equipped kitchen! We had a lovely couple of weeks. A special thank you to Jeanne and Peter for keeping in contact and Vanda for the warm welcome.

A fantastic villa in a beautiful location

6 of us had a wonderful holiday in this villa. The facilities within it are the best we've ever come across - lots of pots and pans for all occasions. The beds were comfortable with plenty of storage. Vanda greeted us on arrival and did everything she promised us she would do. A car is essential to get the best of the whole area around the villa. Wonderful villa, wonderful location

I cannot fault the villa. It was spacious, well equipped and clean. The location is wonderful offering fabulous views and we enjoyed being able to join the Levada just below us. With lots of room in the garden and a great pool, we spent many days simply enjoying the villa. Jeanne and Peter were excellent to deal with and extremely accommodating of our late arrival and departure times. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Casa Rochinha.

Wonderful short vacation

We were in Madeira from the 14.11 to 23.11. Despite the fact that the weather was not very good the first few days. One of the reasons for this was house itself, its location and the beautiful view from the terrace. The water in the pool was warm enough to swim in the morning before breakfast. The house is located quite high in the mountains in a very quiet place. And therefore we can recommend Casa Rochinha for a relaxing family holiday. Thank you to the owner of the house and those who look after it. David and Viktoria

Came for Christmas and loved the villa, Went in the swimming pool but was to cold then found the sea was best so had Christmas day having a swim in the sea and it was much warmer than the pool. The first two days were cold and found that the heating did not do any good still after that when the sun came out (after 11am) then it was great out site. We went all over Madeira and was good in the caves and also going on the sled basket.

Wonderful Rural Retreat

Having done our research thoroughly, Casa Rochinha was exactly what we'd hoped for ... a fantastic rural setting in the mountains with great views and access directly onto the Levada Nova with miles of potential walking. It is extremely spacious with a lovely garden. We came for peace and quiet and the walking -However, if you want to do lots of sunbathing and have the ability to walk to shops / restaurants, then this villa would not be a good choice as at 600m it can be quite cool and cloudy in the winter months and it is a 10 minute drive to the nearest village / town. Although the villa was generally clean and tidy inside it was a little disapointing to find the bathroom bins had not been emptied, and the BBQ / lounge fireplace had not been cleared from the previous occupants. Also, there were quite a few mice inhabiting the villa with us - but I suspect they hadn't booked!!

Casa Rochinha - June 2016

The villa's elevated location provides a stunning view of the local area and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. The house is comfortable and well equipped with modern conveniences. TV has all the major UK channels available. The property benefits from an alarm system. The pool's greenhouse type cover is a bit worse for wear but very effective providing pool temperatures consistently higher than the June average air temperature. The garden is well stocked and includes a number of the beautiful bird of paradise flowers. The property's pool/BBQ/garden area is private but not secluded. It is overlooked from a tree line above (very rare). Also from the Levada which although a small waterway has a footpath running along side it. The Levada is located about three metres below the length of the rear of the property before turning sharply right and incrediblly running up hill for 300 metres to disappear around a bend. However, anyone walking down the Levada path towards the property can see into the garden, but not the pool. The path is fairly well used particularly in the mornings, evenings and at weekends. Access route to the villa is mostly on steep country roads which in places are very narrow. A car with a medium size engine is required.

Schönes Haus, falsche Jahreszeit

Das Haus ist fraglos sehr schön und groß. Drei Schlafzimmer, zwei mit Doppelbett Einzelbett, eines mit zwei Einzelbetten, zwei Bäder (eines mit großer Dusche, eines mit Badewanne mit Dusche), sehr große Küche und ein großer Wohnbereich engen nun wirklich nicht ein. Die Küche ist komplett ausgestattet, sogar einen Mixer fanden wir vor. Im Hauswirtschatsraum findet sich neben einer Waschmaschine auch ein elektronischer Wäschetrockner. Das fanden wir sehr angenehm. Leider gab es auch einige Einschränkungen. Das Haus liegt in Arco de Calheta recht hoch in den Bergen, was im Januar dazu fährte, dass das Haus häufig im Nebel lag und es regnete. Dadurch war es auch sehr kühl. Das Haus verfügt über zeitgesteuerte kleine Heizradiatoren in den Schlafräumen und im Wohnzimmer.Leider hat es an einigen Tagen sehr geregnet. Das Flachdach hat das nicht aufnehmen können und so mussten wir zeitweise einige Schalen aufstellen. Das Haus verfügt im Wohnbereich über einen großen Steinofen. Zum Beheizen ist in der Garage sehr viel Holz vorhanden gewesen. Enttäuscht waren wir vom Pool, der als "beheizt" angekündigt wurde. Er ist sehr groß und hat ein aufschiebbares Dach. Allerdings wird er wohl solar beheizt und wegen der fehlenden Sonne erreichte das Wasser nicht mehr als 19-20 Grad. Unser Fazit: Ein sehr schönes Haus, aber für die Winterzeit nicht so geeignet.

Idéal séjour en famille

Nous avons passé un très bon séjour en famille. La maison est très grande avec une vue magnifique. La mer et le supermarché est à 15 minutes en voiture. Emplacement parfait pour visiter l’île. Elle est un peu moins ensoleillé qu’en bord de mer.Peter et Jeanne sont très arrangeant et facilement joignable . Je conseille cette maison pour une grande famille.

Ruhige Lage - sehr in die Jahre gekommen

Das Haus liegt sehr ruhig in 600m Höhe. Wir waren im Herbst dort, das heißt, dass wir auch innen eine Vielzahl an Insekten hatten, die Räume sehr muffig waren und die Wäsche nicht trocknet. Die Wohnung selbst ist großzügig geschnitten, es ist alles da. Auch der Pool ist überdurchschnittlich groß, angenehm temperiert und der Blick ist toll. Leider ist das Haus sehr in die Jahre gekommen, so dass die Bäder dringend saniert werden müssten, das Pooldach sehr verschimmelt ist und die Anziehsachen in Schrank und Schubladen den muffigen Geruch angenommen hatten. Es gab einige Stellen, an denen schon lange nicht mehr geputzt worden ist. Das WLAN funktioniert nur im Wohnzimmer, was insbesondere für unsere Jugendlichen, die sich in ihre Zimmer zurückziehen wollten, ziemlich blöd war. Die Heizkörper in den Schlafräumen funktionierten ebenfalls nicht. Als in einer Nacht der Strom ausfiel wurde das Problem sehr freundlich und zügig behoben. Das Bemühen um eine freundliche Atmosphäre war spürbar, half leider nicht über die einfache Ausstattung hinweg. Dafür war der Preis pro Nacht im Vergleich zu anderen Häusern, die wir auf Madeira gebucht haben, eindeutig viel zu hoch.

Schöne Unterkunft in der ruhigen Lage!

Das Haus ist super schön und groß. Es beinhaltet alles was man braucht! Die Küche ist voll mit allen Küchenutensilien. Die Kommunikation mit Jeanne, Vanda und Peter war reibungslos. Der Pool war leider noch zu kalt, obwohl angeblich beheizt. Der Kamin war unser Highlight jeden Abend. Da das Haus ziemlich weit oben befindet, kann es auch sehr kühl werden. Aber das hat uns nicht gestört. Die Inserat Bilder stimmen überein. Die Lage ist super, man kommt überhaupt hin wo man hin möchte. Die Sauberkeit könnte bissl besser sein, Aber grundsätzlich war alles tipptopp . Immer wieder

Top Ferienwohnung in traumhafter Lage.

Das Haus ist traumhaft schön, groß und geräumig. Die Terrasse mit fantastischen Blick auf die Bucht und das Meer ist wundervoll. Da die Lage auf 600 m Höhe ist, wird es abends (Oktober) doch recht kühl. Dass der Pool bedeckt ist, ist genial und macht perfekt nutzbar. Die Ausstattung der Ferienwohnung ist umfassend und gut nutzbar. Die Casa ist nicht ganz leicht zu finden, dafür wird man von einem leicht erreichbaren Treffpunkt aus hin geleitet. Ohne eigenen PKW wäre man allerdings aufgeschmissen. Für uns war die Location ein exzellenter Ausgangsort viele Wanderungen und Touren.

Sehr schön mit kleinem "aber"....

Sehr schönes Ferienhaus. Leider wegen der hohen Luftfeuchtigkeit moderiger Geruch in den Schlafzimmern. Alles an Verbrauchsmaterial muss gekauft werden... Spülimaschinenpulver, Müllbeutel, Alufolie / Backpapier, Salz.... Ansonsten aber ein sehr schönes Ferienhaus mit toller Lage.

Be great in High season

All very pleasant. Definitely recommend this place in high season. Slightly unlucky weather half our stay. Was unaware til we arrived that the pool is only solar heated, so only usable 2 afternoons for us. It is also a 15 min drive, nit walk, to calheta beach. Otherwise, very homey, great view. Had everything you could need. Levado walk at bottom of the garden very worthwhile. Turn right!

Très belle propriété fleurie, vue magnifique sur toute la côte et les champs cultivés en espalier.

2 semaines de plaisir en raison de l'immense cuisine avec vue sur mer. Idéale pour cuisiner. Barbecue extérieur au top. Grands espaces. Maison magnifiquement fleurie. Environnement calme. Piscine de 5x10m . Seul petit point sombre, la propreté de la piscine et du dôme. Les chambres sont vieillotte. Un changement de literie serait très apprécié. Endroit que nous recommandons pour son espace à vivre, une grande intimité à l'extérieur : Espace vraiment clos des regards indiscrets lorsque l'on profite de la piscine et du soleil sur la terrasse. Belles balades pédestres depuis la levada qui coule au pied de casa Rochinha. Nous imaginons que cet endroit est idéal pour une famille avec enfants, la piscine est bien sécurisée. Très bon séjour au calme.
