Our 1847 farmhouse is centrally located on Mt.Desert Island. A private entrance leads to an upstairs, sunlit, suite with a queen bedroom, living room with futon, private bath, and kitchenette with microwave, refrigerator, toaster, coffeemaker.
The house and stable, which once served the livery needs of Mt. Desert, are located on one of the major island roads. Acadia NP, Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor and the 'Quiet Side' of MDI are all close by, but be prepared for summer traffic.
The space This newly renovated suite is tucked under the exposed, hand hewn beams of this 1847 Cape. Bands of the original timber-framing have been left exposed; wide plank floors have been newly refinished. The bathroom and kitchenette are brand new. The suite is bright, well-lit, and warmly and comfortably furnished. Wifi is available.
Guest access Our guests will enjoy the entire upstairs floor of our house, with a small sitting deck at their private front entrance. The stairs to the second floor are original to the house, which was built in the 1840's, so they are a little steeper than usual. Ample parking is available.
Other things to note Directly across the road you'll find a well-stocked general store -- some of the best sandwiches on the island -- a brew pub and barbeque restaurant.
Country roads that are great short-cuts to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park end right at our property. We're located in the township of Bar Harbor but not in the busy hub itself...Our location is on one of two main roads on the island. The good news is that we are centrally located for exploring all parts of MDI. The entrance to Acadia National Park is 5 miles away. Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor, Northeast Harbor, Seal Harbor and the rest of Mount Desert Island are all easy to get to from our location. The downside is that the road is busy and there is traffic noise.

Jane was there to meet us when we arrived, even though it was almost midnight do to flight issues. They have us great advice on things to do at acadia Park. The place was super cute and perfect for what we needed.
Excellent location at Town Hill, Mt. Desert, on the "less busy" side of Acadia. The hosts were excellent... so very helpful with great suggestions on hikes and restaurants.
Highly recommend.
Very friendly hosts - gave my partner and I a great overview of hikes in the area and even let us borrow their crampons! Place itself is beautifully decorated and very homey. Definitely planning to stay again in the future.
The hosts were very helpful at check-in, offering lots of knowledge and maps for getting around and some tips for walking/hiking locations. A nice selection of goodies for breakfast, including yogurt, granola and fresh fruit. Perfect size for the 2 of us! Would stay here again, for sure!!!
We loved staying here. We have stayed at a few VRBO and none have ever been cleaner. There were so many nice little touches in the decorating and historic feel, but all fresh and clean. Very helpful hosts and super easy to work with. We would 100%stay here again.
Great location, everything is Acadia is ~20 min away. It is the quiet side of the Island, it never feels crowded. We loved the apartment, it looks even better than the images. It is next to a fairly noisy road though, no problem though when windows are closed.
Short ride to all points of Acadia. Close to Bar Harbor town but we could choose OUR time to be in town and in the park. We were able to avoid both traffic and people crowds. The amenities suited us so we could eat most meals at the room but also enjoy restaurants on our schedule. Will likely visit again.
Jane & Paul were the perfect hosts! Under the Eaves was a quaint one bedroom in an 1840 home. The pine footing was exquisite. The nightly fire pit was the perfect cap, along with a wine or beer, to a perfect day in Acadia NP. The location was perfect as well. Great selection & choice on our part.
I was on the Island to clean out my parent’s house. Jane and Paul were very welcoming. There were snacks and beverages in the apartment. I was very comfortable. I will certainly stay there again.
The owners went out of the way to make our stay wonderful! The place was immaculate! Hiking trails were shared, highlighted and ready to go. The food items such as: coffee, tea, bananas, granola were all delicious! They kept in touch to let us know about happenings in the area.
Hope to get back sometime soon!!!
Jane and Paul were so nice and accommodating the whole time. They educated us about different sightseeing, provided us with snacks/food, as well as giving us the proper hiking gear. No other place competes with these guys
Pail and Jane were absolutely wonderful to us. They were available to give recommendations of sights and activities on the island. They also provided a wonderful map and description of the various hikes available in Acadia National Park. It was a great experience and the location of this house allowed easy access to both Southwest Harbor and Bar Harbor. I would highly recommend!
Jane and Paul were waiting for us when we arrived and Jane came out to meet us in the middle of Tropical Storm Lee. They went over the hiking maps of Acadia which Paul had marked and color coded by difficulty. The place was perfect for our stay. Everything you could possibly need was included, even some food and drink items. It was close to Acadia, Bar Harbor and plenty of restaurants. Wonderful hosts and wonderful place.
Jane and Paul made our stay in the suite under the eaves fantastic. It was excellent for our nearly 2 year old son. We borrowed the Cannondale bikes and bike rack, and Paul suggested an excellent route for a ride on carriage roads. The property is in a great location that is not too far from the town of Bar Harbor while also providing easy access to the rest of MDI.
We were totally pleased with the cleanliness, comfort and convenience of the apartment. They had annotated maps of the park which we used everyday. And they left us breakfast food and coffee to last most days. The only change we would make is to have a TV in the room. Otherwise we loved the suite.
Suite under the Eaves is an amazing space with amazing hosts. Jane contacted us prior to our stay and gave us check in directions. She happened to be out of town so Paul handled all the logistics while we were there. It was an amazing stay on an amazing property with such great hospitality. Thank you Jane and Paul for all of your efforts put into this thoughtful VRBO(the best we've ever stayed in)! Paul's suggestions on things to do are very well thought out and his maps and all the amenities offered were great. We had a fantastic time visiting with family staying in the area. Thank you again and we will be coming back again. Chris/Cheryl/and Katherine.
Perfect location/place to stay to explore Acadia National Park/Bar Harbor
Jane and Paul were perfect hostess/host of their beautifully landscaped and extremely comfortable accommodations!!! They are a lovely/friendly couple who exude hospitality yet provide privacy. Their property is meticulously and thoughtfully designed and kept and provision is made for every need. They are also very generous with all the “extras” they included to meet above and beyond your expectations for a great start to a great getaway!!! Paul included maps for some of his favorite hikes w/a brief commentary on each and labeled them by their degree of difficulty. ( my husband and I did all his easy hikes/and an easy/moderate) we were so thankful to have his suggestions, maps and synopses. It was soooo helpful and each hike was special and exciting. We did a few we heard of from others we met on vacation/locals and all were worth the visit!!! Jane added so much to our trip by being a most gracious/kind hearted hostess. We read in the evening some of the books they had for our convenience. Acadia by Jack Perkins was my favorite. I have actually purchased two of these books and since I bought the first as a gift and decided to gift the second - I will now buy the third for myself!!! Very thankful for her kindness in sharing her private garden and another of the rentals. Beautiful properties!!! We also had the use of a separate laundry room (all you need to do laundry) . We stayed two weeks and that was an extra blessing as we were caught in a rainstorm on a hike.
Overall, the trip to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park was wonderful.
The hosts were quick to respond to messages (prior to coming). Paul met us upon arrival. He showed us around and provided a print out of recommended hikes and offered restaurant suggestions.
The place was very clean and matched the description/pictures. It was stocked with all the needed home/bathroom stuff - dishes, glasses, silverware, shampoo, tissue, paper towels, bath towels, soap etc. The hosts also provided snacks and some breakfast food as well as a very tasty beverages in the place.
Jane and Paul were kind to let us borrow some hiking poles which were useful on some of the hikes we did. THANK YOU!
The property has a firepit which we took advantage of on our last night there. The hosts provided the firewood, and lighter which was super kind.
Things to consider before booking 1) The property is close to a major road, so you can hear cars and trucks (which was in other reviews). 2) We had a lot of issues with locking and unlocking the door so that was a bit frustrating. 3) You have to climb steep stairs (disclosed in the VRBO description) and the place is above the hosts residence (that did not bother us but noting it for others).
Overall, the VRBO fit our needs and I would recommend it if you are looking for a place not too far from "downtown" Bar Harbor and Acadia National park.
We had a great time visiting your part of the country. Thanks again!
Jane and Paul are fantastic hosts. So gracious and helpful. Paul provided a hiking guide which was really helpful. The space is absolutely charming, and convenient to so many places of interest. I can’t recommend them highly enough! Thanks, Jane and Paul!
The owners are so nice and helpful. They welcomed us to the property and were always a text away if we had any questions. Every bit of advice they offered only added to the amazing trip. The house was so nice, our bed was comfy. We used the bikes provided to take a ride on the carriage trails. I will say, this rental was the best choice of the trip. Thank you for your hospitality.
Everything about our stay was perfect. Far exceeded our expectations in every way. Beautiful accommodations. Look forward to visiting again until he future
Wonderful friendly hosts. Spent most time hiking. Hosts provided maps and detailed information that wS helpful to us choosing our trails. No many restaurants open in the area this time of year
We like staying in VRBOs on our travels and found this one perfect for our needs. Our first two nights on MDI were spent in Bar Harbor followed by four nights "Under the Eaves". Really enjoyed the quieter side. Paul and Jane are perfect hosts and make you feel like family. They contacted us prior to arrival to arrange an arrival time so they could personally greet us. Maps of Acadia and a detailed list of their favorite hikes were very helpful. The welcome supply of food stuffs was great as we arrived Sunday evening.
The upstairs unit has plenty of room and everything you need to enjoy your time in Acadia. Close to everything but away from the crowds in Bar Harbor. Definitely recommend the property.

Your host
When I was in college I worked in Acadia National Park in the summers. After I graduated, I stayed and worked on the Island for a number of years before moving back to Atlanta. Of course, I always wanted to come back to Mt. Desert Island, but my career, my husband's business, our children, elderly parents -- all those very important things came first. When the opportunity to move popped up, my husband, Paul, and I jumped at the chance. We both grew up in large, Southern families. Guests from all over the neighborhood -- and all over the world -- were often at our dining tables. We multiplied that happy energy in our Atlanta home. When we decided to move to Maine, we knew we wanted to infuse our new place with a similar upbeat vibe. We also wanted to create a special place for people coming to experience the Maine Coast and Acadia National Park. So here we are, living our best life, enjoying old friends and making new ones, meeting amazing people and working hard everyday to provide an extraordinary guest experience for everyone who stays with us.
Why they chose this property
Our old, timber frame house was built in 1847. The barn was built sometime before 1850 and served as the Livery Stable for this end of Mt. Desert Island which was primarily a farming community for a couple of hundred years. Paul has spent his career designing and building homes, and he gets all the credit for saving the barn -- which was falling in -- re-designing it, and creating two beautiful apartments within. He also renovated our house and tucked a cozy Suite Under the Eaves for guests.
What makes this property unique
The hiking in Acadia National Park is some of the best in the U.S. It's fun. It's accessible and the views are spectacular. Paul has put together a great guide to his favorite hikes in Acadia, and he's marked a trail map as a companion to the guide. Our guests love it!
Additionally, the Carriage Roads in Acadia are fantastic for cycling. We have excellent Cannondale bikes to share, along with helmets and racks.
