Snave: a Former Sea Captain's House with Ocean Views for Rent

Snave is an old sea captain's house on top of a hill overlooking New Harbor. It has old island antique furniture and all the comforts of home including outdoor shower. It also overlooks State Beach but because of the huge amount of growth, it is only a distant ocean view. There is a big front yard and also an area in back with picnic table and grill. It is very private and yet convenient to the beach and town.

There is a queen bedroom downstairs with a bathroom and a futon couch in the den. Upstairs there is one double bedroom with a small single bedroom attached and one bedroom with two twin beds and a queen bedroom and a bathroom.

Pets need to be approved as to the maturity of their behavior and, if approved, there is an additional $100 fee.

Rentals are by the week only in July and August except sometimes the very last week of August.

Great house

Stayed at the Snave for a week with six other friends and wives dropping in and out and it was great for what we were doing. Close, easy walks to BI Boat Basin, Payne's and Champlin's. Rooms were clean and all plumbing worked great. Comms with the hosts was easy and direct. Would def stay again!

Lovely stay on a lovely Island

Had a wonderful stay at the Snave house. It was such a quiet, peaceful property that was close to a lot of great restaurants and attractions on the Island. I would love to stay here again and would highly recommend to anyone looking to make the most of their visit to Block Island.

Cozy home

This house fit the bill! It was a great home base to explore all that Block Island has to offer. All the family enjoyed hanging out and catching up on our lives. The communication was A. Absolutely no problems. Highly recommend.

Very restful stay. Interesting eclectic furnishing, but comfy snd homey. The house is definitely not handicsp accessible and has too many electrical cords.

Great Location, No AC

We had a great time on the island and Snave House was a great location and well stocked with necessities. Unfortunately, there is no AC and the fans just could not impact the heat. Lots of cold showers for everyone. Also, one of only two bathrooms is blocked by a bedroom making it difficult to access for everyone else staying. My suggestion is to swap the den and the bedroom to make it more accessible.

Block Island getaway

Wonderful location. Very private. Cabs are very accessible. House had everything we needed to make two meals per day.

Comfortable, roomy, clean, well equipped. Great location. Homey. Close to town but out of the busy areas. Beautiful views. Quiet. Pet friendly. A peasure. Highly recommend.

Comfy cozy bliss

Absolutely fantastic stay all around. The location at the center of the island is wonderful - everything feels close. We are a group of friends and family who do an annual trip every year for 13 years running. 12 of them had been at a bigger more modern oceanfront home, but Snave made us feel more at home than we ever were. The rooms and the porch and the vibe and feel just lent itself to us feeling at home and to better conversation, etc. Laurie was accommodating as can be and, well, we didn't want to leave. Oh, I love this place. Ten stars.

Relax, all the comforts needed to unwind with family!

I enjoyed our stay at Snave so much that I want to make it a yearly trip for us. We are grandparents and to have the family together here worked out well. Great location, comfortable beds, well stocked kitchen. The home has a warmth and character of it's own.

Excellent stay at the Snave House

The Snave House was a perfect place for our two families to stay while attending our cousins weekend wedding on the island! The taxi system on the island was superb and got us from place to place without having to bring our car. The house was very clean and accommodating. Laurie has thought of everything you could need and just a text away if we needed her. I would definitely recommend staying here. Very lovely and peaceful home. Thank you Laurie!

Sisters Come Home

We liked the antique decor, the roominess, comfort, and the large front porch! Also beautiful sunsets! Great location to all parts of the island. Three of our family were born on Block Island. This was a very memorable happy visit for four sisters and their niece!

Three Fantastic Days on the Block

I considered this wonderful home a classic Block Island stay. We had seven adults and one infant and there was plenty of room. The beds were all excellent, it was well equipped for cooking and grilling and the location was quiet. We did not have a car, but between bikes, walking and cabs (the best Block Island modes of transportation) we had not trouble getting to the beach, restaurants. Looking forward to repeating this trip!

Very accommodating

Plenty of room for 8 adult family members. Laurie kindly offered for us to stay an additional night for free due to the horribly rainy day we had on Saturday. I also forgot my pillow there and she was quick to mail it back to me! Thank you Laurie !

Few things.. Great host

When you arrive and try to find the house, do not use the house address, use the house name. The house is difficult to find on your own, down a gravel road/driveway, other homes use the same road. The taxicabs knows it my house name only. Bit of a walk into town, we used taxicabs, (15 dollars to Spring House). I agree with another persons comment, needs up dating. Up stairs is cute, shower a little difficult because of the height, single bedroom is off another bedroom. Downstairs could use a up date. The host was great, return my text right away.

Horrible Stay, Do Not Recommend

My friend and I rented the Snave House last-minute as our on-island friend just had a baby. I vacation in BI often (I had gotten married there), and my friend grew up going there every summer. We know what to expect out of BI antique rentals: simplicity, charm and not usually a ton of bells and whistles (I myself own a home from the 1800s - I love antiques). A couple of days before our arrival, my friend's infant came down with diarrhea with a fever, and as so often happens with little babies in this situation, we did not know whether this would be a 24 hour bug or something more. I had called the owner asking that if we weren't able to make it up, whether we could have our money refunded.She responded she'd keep a $200 fee and return us the remaining $1,000 for our stay. I didn't think this to be so unreasonable, though the fee a bit unncessary considering the house would have sat vacant anyway. Fortunately, my friend's son only had a virus and it went away in a couple of days. When we arrived at the house, we were taken aback by the state of the house. There was wallpaper ripping off the walls, a strong smell of must/mold in the air, thick layers of dust covering the fans, stains on the mattresses, and feces in the downstairs toilet that wouldn't initially flush. The nephew of the owner came over (unannounced-we had no idea who he was) to show us how to operate the shower appropriately because the door to the shower was broken. Half the light fixtures didn't even have lightbulbs in them. The mattresses were the most uncomfortable that we had ever slept on! And the sheets that I was provided with to sleep on mine were much too small. Lastly, one would think that if you are renting an old house in late spring (expensively, too), you would have the means to keep it warm considering there is little insulation in the walls. The upstairs heaters were broken, which left the 2 rooms our babies slept in freezing. The landlord's solution was to jack up the heat downstairs (it was a cold night in the low 40s), which left the rooms not that much warmer upstairs and the downstairs in the 80s in the a.m. She offered a space heater for the next day - but which baby's room would get the heater? A realtor friend found us another place to stay and the Snave House landlord refused to refund us for the remaining 2 nights, despite explaining to her why frigid rooms at night and babies are an issue (never mind all the other issues we encountered). Renters beware!
